Why March Madness makes no sense!

Post by Walla Walla » Fri Apr 01, 2005 8:22 am

Looking at the NFFC and seeing they are spliting the events between hotels got me wondering. Why does it have to be the weekend of March Madness?

A week before offers the betting on the championship weekend. Most of us are showing up for the baseball draft. Not the college basketball! Does waiting one more week offer that much more? No rosters have been set. It would give Stats another week to get it together. It makes more sense to have this thing a week before with the chance of better hotel openings. Does NY or Chicago really care if its a week before? Feel free to jump on this If I'm wrong.

My preference would be to see the draft take place the week-end before the season opener as March Madness means little to me, like you say, we are there for baseball and in the case of Vegas, a little gaming. I have now drafted in Vegas and Chicago and found being in Chicago to be a bit too quiet for my tastes. My concern with doing the draft closer to the opener is that the current process of getting all the draft data entered is too cumbersome and prone to error. NFBC is in need of a technology upgrade for the drafts. STATS too has their troubles and if we increase the number of teams, getting all the team and free agent data entered in a timely and accurate fashion seems unlikely.

I agree with Walla. Can't see why we need to be in Vegas on the expensive weekend when we don't have much time to watch college basketball anyway.

NFBC needs the time to enter 25 leagues, have them checked by all the teams and make the necessary corrections. With a week to go some post every hour "is it done yet?, is it done yet?" Can you imagine the chaos if the season were about to start shortly after the draft.

JP, I was saying a week before. Not a week after.

An extra week would help not hurt the setup.

Holy Cow , i actually agree with walla and Bjob ///////but on a serious note , i understand there point about hotels and such , not that i draft in vegas i keep it local. My only suggestion about NY. is keep it out of these so called big name hotels such as the hilton , i found it to be a complete rip off and i didnt even stay there as some owners did

I for one love the fact it is opening round of ncaa tourney. Being that weekend, it also allows some of us to meet with others for the long weekend in vegas who have little interest in fantasy baseball. It also creates more teams as I sponsored one for a pal and and one of the other two I meet played for the hell of it. Nothing wrong with a little dead money right.

He likes it that weekend because they are there and he can hang out with them. In fact, he also tossed in the cash for a friend of his to draft a team who doesn't know much about fantasy baseball and one of his other friends bought a team just to hang out. He feels both of these friends have zero chance to win and are dead money, donating to the rest of us - but it was fun for him and his friends to share the event and the NCAA weekend.

Good work on the translation there. I hope both of his friends are in LV 7. You could end up getting a lot more than a nickel out of this. If you really want it, shoot me your address.

That's pretty crappy interest for a long-term investment.

We have been doing Vegas March Badness for four years. The reason room rates were out of control was the CONEX Expo which is held every 5 years. '04 rates were 25% of this past years rates. Even with busier weeks, booking well in advance will save a lot of money. If the NFBC boys are locked in for '06 book as early as the casino will let you; or marry a degenerate gambler and get comped rooms. Caesaers Palace made out well on Dave's "free" room.

My train of thought on this issue was getting a hotel where you could stay and also do all the drafts. I left the Rio at 4:30 in the morning on Sunday. The line for the taxi's was about fifty people. No taxi to be found. I made it to the airport on time only because I got offered a ride in a Limo by the guy standing next to me. I think thats crazy. I think a week earier and that wouldn't happen. As it stands Greg said they are having a hard time nailing down a hotel. Many want a strip hotel. Its not going to happen if we continue on March Madness weekend.

[/QUOTE]Not many good investments with 5 cent minimums ;)

Let me see if Berkshire Hathaway will let me in...

Its not going to happen if we continue on March Madness weekend. Well, as I've often said John, don't bet against me! :D We're working hard on the hotel situation. I can get one on the Strip, but I'm trying to do it by eating the meeting room cost and not MAKING every NFBC participant stay at my hotel and pay for my food and beverage minimums. It's not easy when Strip hotels normally ask for $55 per person per day minimums in F&B and a hotel room each night. Few people understand that.

The NFBC will NEVER host their draft three weeks before Opening Day. That's far too early and allows luck to creep into the equation too much. Yes, two weeks before Opening Day is still early and injuries still happen after our drafts, but it's the perfect length of time to allow us to enter all of the leagues, check all 450-player rosters for each league and still allow a FAAB period before Opening Day. It's always going to be busy in Las Vegas during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, but this year was a crazy exception with ConExpo in town. I hope to have our hotel secured very early for 2006 and everyone can plan accordingly, or join us in a different city if LV is just too crazy for their liking.

But operationally, two weeks before Opening Day makes the most sense. Hmmmm, maybe the NCAA would move March Madness back a week! :D Ask them to move it for us.

A week earlier makes no sense to me. With so many roster changes the last weeks of Spring training it's bad enough drafting two weeks before opening day, three weeks before opening day the rash of injuries, trades, and demotions could ruin your draft.
