What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
I know we still have 2+ weeks in the NFBC regular season, but it was fun today to look at the overall standings and see where the top teams drafted from. Here's a quick look at some facts involving the 15-Team NFBC Main Event:
** FIVE of the Top 15 teams drafted from the 11th spot, including four of the Top 9 teams. There's a common theme there: Matt Kemp in the first or second round and sometimes Justin Verlander in the the third round.
** 11 of the 15 spots are represented in the Top 20. The only spots not represented to date are Nos. 2, 8, 9, 10. It's surprising that nobody at 10 is in the Top 20, yet No. 11 leads the way with 5 teams in the Top 20.
** The Top 6 teams all drafted from different spots: 11, 14, 7, 6, 1, 4.
** Eight of the Top 20 teams drafted during the first weekend. That's 40 percent, compared with 31 percent of all teams (120 of 390) drafting that first weekend. Not a big anamoly, but something to note.
Here's a look at the Top 20 teams from the NFBC Main Event and where they drafted from:

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
I assume Number 2 has 0 teams since most people selected the wonderful Hanley Ramirez.
I selected 3rd thinking I would get Tulo. But the #2 team grabbed Tulo. So I was happy to get Hanley at 3.
Well, that worked out great! Stinkin bum
But since my pitching has been SICK this year (top era and whip overall), I have snuck into the top 20 overall without a 1st round pick player and a few other stiffs like Aaron Hill, Geovany Soto, John Buck, etc... hence why I am almost dead last in BA

The 12-Team format is even more interesting when looking at the overall standings. In the NFBC Online Championship -- which included 780 teams among the Live and Online versions -- the back of the draft order really seems to be dominating. In fact, 16 of the Top 20 teams overall drafted from the bottom half of the draft order. That's pretty amazing.
Here are some quick facts:
** Among the Top 20 overall, No. 8 has the most teams with five, while Nos. 10 and 11 have three teams each.
** Every spot is represented in the Top 20 except Nos. 1 and 6.
** 16 of the Top 20 teams come from the bottom half of the draft order. Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 have one team each, while Nos. 1 and 6 have zero teams. Pretty amazing.
** Ryan Braun is the most common name among the Top 20 teams, going 8th to 11th in some leagues. He leads Gino Yu's top-rated team now from the 11th spot as Gino took Braun and Teixeira 1-2.

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
The NFBC season has come to an end and now it's time to look at some of the data to see if we can draw any conclusions. Once again baseball has proven that you can draft from any spot and come away a winner. There are diamonds in the rough in all of the rounds, although finding them isn't easy.
I've looked at the Top 20 teams in the Main Event and the Online Championship and will post them here. Give me a little more time and I'll analyze the Main Event league winners and figure out where they drafted from and post them here as well. It's just fun data to look at and analyze for future drafts.
Here are a few quick points and then the data:
** FOUR of the Top 12 teams drafted from the 11th spot. There's a common theme there: Matt Kemp in the first or second round and sometimes Justin Verlander in the the third round.
** 12 of the 15 spots are represented in the Top 20. The only spots not represented are Nos. 8, 9, 10. It's surprising that nobody at 10 is in the Top 20, yet No. 11 leads the way with 4 teams in the Top 20.
** The Top 7 teams all drafted from different spots: 14, 11, 7, 6, 4, 15, 1. That's a wide range of top teams, from first spot to last spot to middle spot. AMAZING range.
** Eight of the Top 20 teams drafted during the first weekend. That's 40 percent, compared with 31 percent of all teams (120 of 390) drafting that first weekend. Not a big anamoly, but something to note.

The third season of our NFBC Online Championship is now in the books and the data from the top teams is even more interesting than the Main Event. What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
Today I went through all 26 Main Event leagues to see where the League Champs drafted from and the data is quite surprising. This year the bottom of the draft was the place to be as 18 of 28 league champs (there were two ties) drafted from the bottom half of the draft order. Let's look at the numbers and then analyze the facts:
NFBC Main Event League Champs:
No. 1 - 3 league champs
No. 2 - 0 league champs
No. 3 - 1 league champ
No. 4 - 2 league champs
No. 5 - 1 league champ
No. 6 - 2 league champs
No. 7 - 1 league champ
No. 8 - 0 league champs
No. 9 - 0 league champs
No. 10 - 1 league champ
No. 11 - 6 league champs
No. 12 - 3 league champs
No. 13 - 1 league champ
No. 14 - 4 league champs
No. 15 - 3 league champs
Nos. 1-5: 7 league champs
Nos. 6-10: 4 league champs
Nos. 11-15: 17 league champs
** 12 of 15 draft spots produced league champs, with No. 11 leading the way with 6 league champs and No. 14 being next with 4 league champs. I think it's safe to say that we've never had that many league champs from those two spots or from the last five spots in the draft order.
** 17 league champs came from Nos. 11 through 15, compared to only 7 from the first five picks. The middle of the draft order produced only four league champs, which is pretty amazing. Only picks 2, 8 and 9 failed to produce league champs.
** Two of the 26 leagues ended in ties for the title. In New York League 3, the co-champs drafted from the 10th and 14th spots, while the co-champs in Online Second Weekend League 3 drafted from the 13th and 14th spots. There really was some love from the bottom slots this year. Amazing.
** Many of these draft spots were the top preferred spot among these owners' KDS listings. I don't have the official total, but I know many of these owners moved down in the draft order and ran their draft plan to a title. It will be interesting to see what the KDS lists look like last year, but if this season is any indication we could be seeing folks moving back in the draft order. But each year is different, so you never know.

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
We all love data and numbers, so let's look at some past years if I can find them and see how unusual 2011 was to past NFBC seasons. Here's a look at 2010's NFBC numbers from the Main Event and from the Top 29 overall:
2010 NFBC League Champions & Where They Drafted From:
No one spot or no top draft pick dominated among the 29 NFBC Main Event leagues. Here's the data for all 31 first place teams (there were two leagues that tied, so I used data from both teams):

Just for fun, I decided to look up the Top 29 teams from the Overall Standings of the Main Event and see what draft spots they came from. There's a slight difference here as No. 10 had the most top finishes with FIVE, along with pick No. 6. Interesting. Two spots weren't represented at all: 5 and 14.

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
The results from 2009 are also top heavy. Here's the data:
The league champions list is a little more top-heavy towards the early part of the draft, which is a bit surprising because injuries to Jose Reyes and David Wright seemed to be pretty damaging, while the back-end of the early rounds looked pretty solid this year. Anyway, the data is in for the 26 main event leagues and it looks like this:
2009 Main Event League Champions & Their Draft Spots:

Spots 1-3: 9 titles
Spots 4-6: 6 titles
Spots 7-9: 4 titles
Spots 10-12: 4 titles
Spots 13-15: 3 titles
** 13 of the 15 spots were represented in this analysis. Only picks 12 and 15 failed to produce a league title this year.
** Pujols and Hanley were easily the top two players on league title winners from the first round.
** It's interesting to note that while only 5 teams from spots 1-3 finished in the Top 25, 9 league champs came from those top three spots.
** In the Super Leagues, champions came from spots 4, 3 and 7/14 (tied for first). In the Ultimate League, the champion came from No. 7.
But here is the data from the Top 25 teams in total points and where they drafted from:

** Pujols and Hanley were easily the top two players on league title winners from the first round.
** It's interesting to note that while only 5 teams from spots 1-3 finished in the Top 25, 9 league champs came from those top three spots.
** In the Super Leagues, champions came from spots 4, 3 and 7/14 (tied for first). In the Ultimate League, the champion came from No. 7.

I know #11 was not our top choice but ran with it. When Cargo fell to be at #11 I was ecstatic. Coming back we took Ryan Zimmerman, wanting a solid, young and talented 3B. (didn't turn out well). Took Cliff Lee in the 3rd and Marmol in 6th. We took Pence and Victorino in between. At the table we were happy and thought we had decent power and decent speed; (those 2 CATS were our weakness all year. Then we took Butler and Aaron Hill. At seasons end I don't know how we won the league based on these picks.
9-12 was a bonanza with D. Hudson, Shields, Kuroda and Kimbrell; Y. Molina and C. Ruiz at 14/16 for C was a nice duo; Asdrubal at 17 was nice; Niemann at 21 was sweet but we dropped him early (ouch); Helton and Frenchy at 28/29 worked out well; some FAAB picks and it all added to a league title and 12th OA.
Looking forward to 2012.

I'm still not sure how exactly we managed to win our league drafting from the 12 spot. We were more than thrilled when Carl Crawford (yuck!) fell to us at 12. After taking Ryan Howard and Justin Verlander, we followed up the Crawford mistake by taking Justin Morneau (eek!) in the 4th round. The rest of the top 10 finished with Elvis Andrus, Michael Young, Corey Hart, Chris Carpenter, Vladimir Guerrero and Ryan Franklin (1 freaking save?). We must have some good in-season management ability

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
I'm still looking for draft spot info from our early years and can't find some of the data. I did find 2004, however, our initial season when we had 13 Main Event leagues. Here's where the 13 league champs came from in 2004:
2004 NFBC League Champs And Where They Drafted From:
The draft positions of the league champions were:
No. 1 -1 team
No. 2 - 0 teams
No. 3 - 4 teams
No. 4 - 1 team
No. 5 - 1 team
No. 6 - 1 team
No. 7 - 1 team
No. 8 - 0 teams
No. 9 - 1 team
No. 10 - 1 team
No. 11 - 0 teams
No. 12 - 2 teams
No. 13 - 0 teams
No. 14 - 0 teams
No. 15 - 0 teams
The overall winner (Artie Rastelli) and runner-up both drafted #3 in their respective leagues.
This pattern of the back-end of the draft not winning league titles in 2004 and 2005 led the NFBC to create the Kentucky Derby System (KDS) in 2006 and it was first used in the NFBC during the 2006 season. KDS has been used every year since then and as you can see in 2011 there were many owners who liked the back-end, requested the back-end of the draft and excelled from the back-end of the draft. So times have changed in the NFBC and hopefully for the better.

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
The first year of KDS in 2006 produced more balanced numbers among our league champions. I just found that post here. Enjoy.
2006 NFBC League Champions And Where They Drafted From:
The final data is in for the 22 NFBC main event leagues and the two Ultimate Draft Leagues and we can finally see where the money winners came from. Here are the final tallies from 2006:
Owners who won league titles came from the following draft spots:
No. 1: 2 owners
No. 2: 0
No. 3: 0
No. 4: 2
No. 5: 1
No. 6: 1
No. 7: 2
No. 8: 0
No. 9: 3
No. 10: 3
No. 11: 1
No. 12: 1
No. 13: 3
No. 14: 1
No. 15: 4
Nos. 1-5: 4 league champs
Nos. 6-10: 9 league champs
Nos. 11-15: 10 league champs
That's 8 out of 24 winners from the last three draft spots and 16 of 24 spots from the last seven draft spots. Interesting.

What Spot Did The Top 20 Teams and League Champs Draft From?
I was looking over this data today and realized that for all of the Main Event League Champions data we have since 2004, it's amazing how evenly balanced the draft spots have become in our 15-team format. The number of league champs is very balanced among all of the draft spots through the years.
Yes, the top of the draft order has the most champions, the but No. 2 spot also has by far the fewest league champs since 2004. Why is that? No idea, which No. 4 has 15 league champs and No. 1 has 13 league champs. Coincidence? I don't know.
Anyway, of the 149 Main Event leagues that I have data for (I'm still missing 2 years of data that I'll add later) here are the No. of Main Event League champs from each spot:
2004-2011 Main Event League Champs:
No. 1 - 13 League Champs
No. 2 - 5 League Champs
No. 3 - 12 League Champs
No. 4 - 15 League Champs
No. 5 - 9 League Champs
No. 6 - 10 League Champs
No. 7 - 10 League Champs
No. 8 - 9 League Champs
No. 9 - 10 League Champs
No. 10 - 10 League Champs
No. 11 - 9 League Champs
No. 12 - 9 League Champs
No. 13 - 8 League Champs
No. 14 - 10 League Champs
No. 15 - 10 League Champs
Pretty amazing, isn't it? Now, which spot do you want in 2012?
