Weird Science Wins Week 13 Prize

Post by Tom Kessenich » Tue Jul 05, 2005 2:08 am

To say Weird Science is on a roll would be an understatement. The Las Vegas League 8 team just accomplished something no other team in NFBC history has ever done.

It posted its third first-place finish of the season.

One week after topping the field in Week 12, Weird Science delivered another first-place showing in Week 13, finishing first with 2,530 points. For finishing first last week Weird Science wins a Ken Griffey Jr. autographed 8x10 photo with sweet spot worth $280 from Upper Deck Authenticated.

J.D. Drew led the way offensively, hitting .471-3-5. Morgan Ensberg (.387-4-12), Marcus Giles (.368-1-6), David Ortiz (.368) and Garrett Atkins (.333-2-6) also delivered big offensive weeks. On the mound, Chris Carpenter (1 win, 9 Ks) and Tim Stauffer (1 win, 8 Ks) paced the starters while Trevor Hoffman and Dustin Hermanson had two saves apiece.

Congratulations again to Weird Science and good luck to everyone in the NFBC this week.

When it comes to the art of the understatement, Kevin Moss may very well be a master.

"This past month has been a good one for my team," Moss said.

No kidding.

Not only has Moss' Weird Science team in Las Vegas League 8 climbed all the way to 13th place on the overall NFBC standings, but in Week 13 it accomplished something no team in the event's history has ever accomplished before - it posted its third weekly victory of the season.

Getting a strong effort from his pitching staff was a comforting sight for Moss, whose team has moved up from 16th to 13th in the overall standings in the last month.

"Pitching has been the biggest concern for me (especially with) one of my top two guns (Tim Hudson) out," said Moss, from Weston, FL. "So I've been active on the Waiver Wire looking for pitchers with favorable matchups and shuffeling them in and out of the starting lineup. Kyle Lohse, Scott Elarton and Ryan Dempster all came from the Waiver Wire and have produced solid numbers while in the starting lineup. On the hitting side, Morgan Ensberg has been my MVP, alongwith Bill Hall, who was picked up on the Waiver Wire when Jose Vidro went down."

Now in first place in Las Vegas League 8 and within shooting distance of first place in the main event, Moss said the key to the remainder of his season is simple.

"I'm going to have to get a few more pitchers along the way to win this thing," he said. "But I've known that since the draft."

Let,me get this right.I travel from south florida to las vegas to compete in a nationwide contest, and I lose the week 12 title to a guy who lives less than 5 miles from my house.Maybe if Bonderman had not thrown batting practice to the diamondbacks on sunday.
