I know you're always looking for balance across all categories in the main event, but when push comes to shove are there ever any categories that you might place greater importance on than others for batters or pitchers?

We had a little conversation over the phone and I could see the twinkle is Steve's eye!

Shawn,

Of the past NFBC auctions that you have participated in, what were some of your hitting/pitching splits in regards to your $260 spent? What was your most extreme hitting/pitching split and how did it work for you? Do you even set a certain amount for hitting and pitching before draft day? In the AL auction, I go in thinking 190/70. You need to spend I little more on the offense because of the DH.

In the NL, I'll go in thinking 180/80. It's very hard to cheat pitching in the NL becuase of the 10 roster spots.

In a mixed auction, I would use 180/80.

When you are in an auction, you can feel when you have a deal in one area. If this happens, you can shift the money to the area of need.

In none trading formats, you might be able to go 200/60. If you do, you could be in for a long year if the low budget side breaks down.

I'd say invest in a core and build you team around it.

I hear the word profit all the time. I don't agree. If you get the key players right year after year, you will be a contender most years.

I'm not a fan of it in the main event. If you go with one closer, how many bench spots are willing to commit to closers in waiting? If your are ok with three or four, you will find one. So you build your starting lineup, but you sacrifice your bench. I'll try for two. I'm sick of chasing saves.

I think it's tough to be on the wrong side of .280 in the main event. I think I pass on low average power. The last two years I've struggled with my power. It's a fine line no matter which direction you decide to go.

On the pitching side whip and era are most important categories. You can add starts to get wins and K's if your other numbers are in line.

Which of these former wunderkinds will live up to their former billing/hype this year?

Billy Bulter

Felix Pie

Jeff Clement

BTW, looking forward to saying hello in Vegas. I might be flying in Thursday evening, so maybe I can catch up to the group in the sports book. Out of the three, I think Billy Butler will have the best major league career. His value this year will be based on where he will hit in the lineup. I liked him last year, but I’ve yet to own him this year. He comes fairly priced, but spring training will drive his value. I think Pie will get his chance this year, but he won’t play everyday. As a reserve pick, he will be playable at certain points of the year. Jeff Clement could be a nice pick at catcher if they give him regular at bats at DH. If he is given a chance this year, I think he makes solid progress. If they sign a Garret Anderson type to play DH, his value takes a huge blow. I think all three players are interesting this year.

I look forward to seeing you in Vegas. Hopefully you aren’t sitting next to me in the main event. If so, I’ll be a Brave man and let most of Atlanta players slide to you except one!
[/QUOTE]The question would be which Brave wouldn't you let slide. If memory serves, you were not too high on Chipper in '04, so I guess he is safe to come to me! :D

Thanks for answering the questions. All due respect to Todd, Tom, Greg and the others gracious enough to share their thoughts, this was the best forum to date.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
