My next hitter is 35th on the all-time list of games played at First Base, but he also played some third base early in his career and that’s where I’m taking him.
Imagine hitting third in a lineup that had Pete Rose and Bobby Tolan (combined .385 OBP) hitting in front of you and the league MVP, Johnny Bench, hitting behind you. That’s where 1970 Tony Perez hit.

While we wait………........…Tony Perez Essentials
Toney Perez is a 2000 HOF inductee and a 7-time All-Star
Tony is 25th all-time in games played.
He played his first game on July 26, 1964. He started at first base and hit 5th in the lineup. Tony was 0-2. He walked in his first PA and flied out to right in his first official AB.
He played his last game on Oct 5, 1986 against the Padres. He field out to CF off Andy Hawkins in his last AB.
Perez hit 379 career Home Runs. His first was off Denny Lemaster on 4/13/65. His last was off Ed Whitson on 10/4/86.
Perez hit more homers off Phil Niekro (9) than anyone else.
Perez is 28th all-time in RBI (1,652). He’s also 11th all-time in K’s (1,867).
Tony was primarily a third baseman from 1968-1971. So why did he move to first…………He led the league in errors in ’68, ’69 & ’70.

BA-.317 If I remember right, Tony Perez was one of the last Cubans who didn't have to 'escape' to get to America. He had a steady job in a sugar cane factory and had to be persuaded to play baseball.
That Cuban embargo began with Castro overthrowing (baseball reference) the island. Now,considered a country violating human rights, President Kennedy announced that a trade embargo would be signed.
Kennedy though, had a deep affection for Cuban cigars. His addiction had started when he was 19 and captained a navy ship. In order to make him appear older to his 'All older than him' crew, he smoked big cigars.
After the decision was made concerning the embargo, Kennedy sent his Press Secretary out to buy 1,000 Cuban cigars. He came back to the White House with 1,200 the next day.
Upon inspection of the cigars, Kennedy pulled the embargo document from his desk and signed it.

But Perez doesn't qualify at 1b in 1970... looks like you've got your CI.

Tough couple rounds to read through as many of the players I hoped would be here have been gobbled up by you &$%*&#'s.
I'm going to switch gears to a shallow position that was ravaged during the last blind round and grab my 1st (visible) catcher. As noted in an earlier post, there really are no 5 category catchers. Problem is there are no 4 category catchers left either......or even 3 category catchers left. There are a couple though that can give you plus stats in two categories, but which to go for? I've decided to strengthen my HR & RBI stats and go for a catcher who only played the position his first three years. I'd be a lot more psychologically comfortable with this pick if his BA was .002 higher, but honestly with only 463 AB's during the season of choice, I think the damage can be mitigated. What he brings to the table in lieu of BA is a HR season only 11 other catchers in history have surpassed and an RBI total that is the 5th best single season total of all-time. I believe that production from a scarce position that this player brings will leave me more options in the 2nd half of this draft. That player......
Rudy York 1938
BA - .298
HR - 33
RBI - 127
R - 85
SB - 1
