66 Days 'til those who haven't won in a while get their next chance to break "The Curse".

Just remember though....

No matter how many future Hall of Famers you roster on draft day for the battle ahead....

Image

No matter how many stud pitchers make your future look bright....

You've only completed the first step once you've left that draft room. Against a level of competition as good as the NFBC, you've still got a battle ahead of you. Be prepared for it or it could end up being another season of wait 'til next year.
For some, it's been a bit of a long wait. ;)

That whole Cubs topic was a kick to the stones Glenn! Good news is that Andre Dawson made it into the thread WAY earlier than last year!

65 Days 'til the first picks of our first live NFBC drafts of 2012 are made. In the initial ADP report posted by Greg a couple days back, Albert Pujols was perched in his familiar spot atop the charts. Whether he remains the top overall pick or not, we know he'll be close. We also know that he'll be joined in the first and early rounds by many of his fellow firstbasemen. Though the position is typically one of the deepest, the best of them don't last very long. We do love our thumpers there.

So don't wait too long or you may end up with this guy manning the position.

By the way Schwks, how goes the research? ;) Hope you're feeling better.

64 Days 'til the first NFBC live draft season in 3 years that doesn't include Citifield as a venue. Though I'm one who rarely expresses the teams I root for, :D a few here might have the impression that I'm a Mets fan. ;) It made the drafts a little more special drafting at the home of my favorite team.

As a Mets fan, most of the greatest memories of my team occurred at Shea and as much as I love our new home, it was a little sad to see it replaced....

Still thanks to Greg and the NFBC, probably my greatest moment as a Mets fan, and one of my favorites as a father, took place at Citifield. What a great day, one I'll never forget. Thanks NFBC. I really owe you one.

Nice Glenn. Very, very nice!

Steve, I'm not sure I know what you mean? I don't recall mentioning my Mets at all in this thread. Ok, maybe once or twice. ;)

Still this one post really wasn't about my Mets. It was more about a great and special day at the ballpark with my boy and memories made that will last forever. Max expressed it very well in that's what baseball is all about. I have many great memories that I owe to baseball. This one's just right up there at the top.

Thanks Glenn for the good wishes...means all the more coming from a fellow Met fan. Here is an update: I am coming up on three weeks post surgery. I am still on crutches and in one of those big can boots. The doctor yesterday started me weaning off the crutches and I start PT tomorrow. What constantly amazes me is how infrequently I get offered a seat on the subway :?:

The doctor tells me that I should expect 85% recovery achieved in about one year. Of course Howard is about 13 years younger then me, and probably rehabs for hours each day, but in response to my direct question, he advised me to stay away from Howard for fantasy baseball purposes in 2012.

I am thinking about retaining him as an advisor this year. Think of all the questions:

"Doc, Ian Kinsler was not injured in 2011, but reportedly got a platelet enriched blood injection into his ankle. He reported that he felt greatly improved. What does this mean when a non-injured player gets these injections?

I had the PRP injection following my shoulder rebuild in December. My arm has not felt this good in easily a decade and I'm 3 weeks ahead of recovery schedule for strength and range of motion. I'm a believer!

63 Days to determine how recent trades affect the value of players on our draft boards.

Image

Some believe that Montero waving goodbye to the Yankees is a good thing guaranteeing him more playing time and even more importantly, more time behind the plate. Still, remember the eligibility rules. Montero doesn't have 20 games played there last year. How long will it take him to get 10 this year? With Olivo and Jaso already in Seattle, there's no guarantee that Montero gets to 10 any faster than he would have in pinstripes.

Image

Throw in the move to the expanses of Safeco and an inept surrounding lineup vs. the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium in the middle of Murderer's Row and does Montero's value really increase?

The other half of the trade? He goes from Safeco and quiet Seattle to the easiest home run park in the American League and the toughest media in the sports world. More wins, probably. Still, I've seen a move to Yankee Stadium eat up much more seasoned and experienced pitchers over the years.

We may be seeing a bit more of this sight during the coming season.....

62 Days left to prep for our NFBC live drafts. Whether you've read your Forecaster cover to cover or have yet to even crack it like myself (too busy posting pics :)), you best be fully prepped come draft day against this level of competition. Realize though, that if you rely solely on the advice of the "experts" as your prep (sorry Doughy), please remember that even those to whom we pay for information like Mr. Shandler are sometimes a bit off base on their projections, leaving your fantasy hopes wounded and you throwing your hands up in frustration if that's all you relied on.

Image

Image

Of these experts, the ones I find most deserving of our respect are those who are willing to test their skills against those to whom they sell or give their advice. While drafts like the Tout Wars, LABR, and the recent SiriusXM draft are all both renowned and challenging, there is nothing but reputation on the line. It would seem easier to me to take a chance or make a statement on a draft pick or an entire draft when nothing of tangible personal value is at stake. To take part in an event as renowned as any of the expert drafts but much more lucrative and lasting in its rewards such as the NFBC and to take on those you hope to advise is to me a show that you believe in your skills and abilities to the point of deserving our patronage.

Perusing the signup lists, I see Jeff Erickson will be there, so will Gene McCaffery, as will Greg Marta. I'm sure Cory Schwartz and Nate Ravitz will take on the challenge once again as they're a part of our event each season. There's little doubt our good friends at Mastersball will be there, as they're always represented, and respected writers Todd Zola, Perry Van Hook, Brian Walton, and Ryan Carey not only always take part in our events in some way, shape, or form, but "tout" their achievements in the NFBC rightfully as some of their greatest. Then of course there's my newest favorite blogger who will always be there, Mr. Dan "Doughy" Kenyon himself.

Still, I hope even more show. As noted earlier, Erickson will be there. Hopefully he'll be joined by Liss, Del Don, and VanRiper as they tested their wares when I got to take them on last year in another now defunct contest. JP Kastner, Matthew Berry, Ray Murphy, Lawr Michaels, many others have taken part in years past. Hopefully they can return. And of course, there's Mr. Shandler. Here's to hoping he returns. If I were he, I'd be back. I'd refuse to allow my legacy in the NFBC to be a one and done second division finish, but instead strive to prove that I'm truly the best of the experts I sell on the front cover of my publication.

I love when the Touts take part in our events, I love the challenge of taking on and sometimes beating those that I've heard of or read. It's an exciting aspect of our event. I'm glad to see that many of them consider the challenge of taking us on is also a worthwhile endeavor.

Agree, playing against all of the experts is a cool aspect of the NFBC Glenn.
Another cool aspect of the NFBC is seeing your pictures in this thread of course.
JOBA, JOBA, JOBA.... I bet the Yankee's are glad they made Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain "UNTOUCHABLE" in all trade talks while trading Ian Kennedy and Tyler Clippard to better their squad!
Funny how some decisions we make in both Real Life and Fantasy Baseball look after a season or two!

61 Days 'til our next opportunity in fantasy sports to have that one incredible year that we'll always be remembered for....

Image

Our friend and fearless leader Greg is coming off one of those special years. Starting off with his well deserved election & induction into the FSWA Hall of Fame, followed by his bounceback from the Fanball closing with a new partnership with STATS and best ever participation numbers for the NFBC & NFFC, and recently topped off with the FSTA's award for the Best Live Event. What a year.

It's great to see Greg get all he's worked so hard for and most certainly deserves. For some no matter what they've accomplished, no matter how great they were......

.....they don't ever receive the accolades and respect they've earned and always seem to remain in the shadow of others.

61 Days 'til we get to try and follow up Greg's award winning year with one of our own.

Great stuff, Glenn.
The Roger Maris story is one that is near and dear to me.
You know, many talk about the Babe Ruth curse on the Red Sox. Forgotten is the pain suffered by each player that has passed his 60 home run mark.
Maris, McGwire, Sosa, and Bonds have all hit more than 60 home runs in a season, and all have paid a severe price for the effort. In Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire's cases, they'll have to come to terms within themselves, but some fans will never forgive them for spoiling sacred baseball records.
Maris however, he had a 'perfect storm' season. And deserved the record.
To me, and many others, he still is the one season home run king.

And sorry to you and Greg. I know your point was to accentuate the great year enjoyed by Greg and the NFBC.
And I agree, Greg, Tom, and STATS have had a perfect storm season of their own.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Great stuff Glenn. This thread is how I start every day, so keep it coming!!! Sprinkling a little love for me, Tom and STATS will keep you on the NICE list with us, so nice job. ;) But seriously, I love the old time photos and the countdowns. My only regret is that with each passing day I know we're closer to needing sellouts in every event. It's like a countdown to my budget numbers!! But I know we'll be fine and when all is said and done this will be another record-breaking season for the NFBC.

And you are right, it has been one helluva year for all of us. I just saw Geoff Stein in Las Vegas and we both know how fortunate we are today. A year ago, me, Tom and Geoff were all looking at unemployment checks and now we're all in great shape (Geoff is working at MyFantasyLeague.com and doing just great). Today we're on a great STATS team and on the best Live Events Team in the industry. We're very proud and very excited about the future. Some of the ideas that came out of Las Vegas are VERY exciting and very good for our players. Stay tuned. Good things are a comin'.

The number 61 and Baseball and Roger Maris will always be synonymous. This is an easy choice and should belong to him each and every year. This time you are forgiven for your extreme New York bias (even if it isn't the mets).

I love the countdown and visit each and every day. Keep up the good work on this, this entertaining tool is much more improtant than any prep you need to dominate your NFBC leagues. :D

Although, the omission of the "84" Tigers in favor of a rookie Don Mattingly card and some potential newcomers was a bit much. They were after all, wire to wire champions with the greatest start in baseball history (35-5) with NO hall of Famers (shameful) with the exception of Sparky and Ernie Harwell. Keep them in mind next year. ;)

Awesome stuff Glenn. I leave you with a short tribute to the Leader of the "84" Tigers.

Thanks Guys.

Dan, don't apologize. I sometimes like to run a couple themes simultaneously for the same Countdown post, similar to what I did with Shawn's 75-75 strategy & the 75 Topps set or as I did with the Citifield drafts & my son's first ballgame. Today I wanted to congratulate Greg for his great year of achievement, but I also wanted to acknowledge Maris for a year that I don't believe ever got its just due. I've become more and more sympathetic to Maris' plight over the years. The ironic thing is that prior to McGwire's breaking of his record, I was one that never fully respected Maris. I felt it minimized one of baseball's most sacred records to have it held by what I felt at the time was an ordinary player who just had one spectacular season that didn't match up with the rest of his career. I felt that the record deserved to be held by a special player and when McGwire broke the record I was satisfied that it was finally in the hands of one. I was young, naive, and obviously very wrong. The record was broken again just a couple years later by Bonds, a player I've always disliked, the feat of 60 home runs became commonplace due to the cheaters, and then as we all know the cheaters were exposed and eventually all but confirmed as cheaters (and in some cases, confirmed). I, like you and I believe many others, now consider any of the 60 home run seasons of the steroid era tarnished and illegitimate. I also believe that this may have been the best thing that has happened to Maris' legacy. He's grown in stature in my mind, and I believe in the minds of many others, a sympathetic figure, a simple man, thrust for a brief time into greatness, now thrust again by the criminal actions of others back into the forefront of a sport's conciousness. Unfortunately, much too late for him to know it.

Greg, I'm flattered that you're enjoying this thread. I'm certainly enjoying putting it together. As far as the accolades, little doubt that you, Tom, and STATS have earned them. The fact that they get me on the NICE list is just a bonus. ;) Regarding your budget numbers, there's little doubt in my mind that you'll achieve them easily. The highest stakes leagues are selling out already (even MtM's is near full which is an achievement in itself :P ), several Auctions are already filled, the slow drafts are through the roof (it looks like you fill one every other day), and there's little doubt the Main, the XII, and the Online Championships will follow suit. We're all as excited as you are, and believe me, we're tuned in. ;) Give Geoff my highest regards as well. A good man, he's missed.

Joe, though I disagree with the New York bias you claim is extreme in this thread (have I even mentioned the Mets yet???), and you seem to have forgotten that the Tigers have been very well represented with Ty Cobb, Denny McLain, and even Ernie Harwell being prominently featured, you are correct that I missed an obvious call in regards to the '84 Tigers. I blame myself and promise it won't happen again. I'll make it up to you here in the only way I know how....

Only 61 Days 'til we can all do our best to fill our rosters with as many Tigers as possible. ;)

Glenn, the 1000 Slow will be here in under a month now Pal! Perhaps we can limp into this thing with a little bit earlier KDS than last year and give us all a bit more prep time to kick each others brains out in that draft! That thing is going to be a cage match for sure!!!!

Glenn,

Simply my dry sense of humor giving you a hard time. I love it when the Tigers show up and yes they have been well represented. I was in the 4th grade for the 68 Tigers and went to every World Series game in 84 including the last one with my Father. One of the top (semi adult) memory's that I got to have with him. We didn't come from a whole lot and he swore me to secrecy that we paid $75 to get in. Family is what baseball is all about. You nailed it.

OK, only you can come up with a Tigers number 61 on the current Tigers team (as a coach) that played on the 84 team. Very impressive.

Yesterday was a bit of a cold and snowy day on Long Island, the perfect day to finally crack open my Forecaster and start my prep for the coming NFBC season. I enjoyed a few hours looking over the "numerish" and the "blurbs" and finally getting my head back into getting ready for our drafts. It's about time. After all, it's only 60 Days 'til this info will be put to use. I've got plenty of prep to go and I'd better get to it because in 60 days I'll have to decide.....

Hu's on first......

Image

Wood's on second......

Image

....and 3rd base? Dunn-o. :D

Image

I know, I know. Terrible. Well whatta ya expect? I had 100 of these to come up with.
Occasionally you might get a clunker. ;) :D :P

Of course these guys did it much better.

59 Days 'til we start drafting the aces we'll be looking to throw up zero after zero for us. In the recently released initial slow draft ADP report, the first pitcher off the board is the Dodgers' Cy Young award winner from last season, Clayton Kershaw. A little over a couple decades back, another Los Angeles Dodgers "Bulldog" set the standard throwing up more consecutive untouched frames than anyone else prior or since. He continued his mastery into the playoffs, breaking the heart of a young Mets fan along the way who fully expected to see his squad in it's 2nd Fall Classic in three years only to see this ace lead his team to an unexpected Championship.

Image

When Hershiser set the record for consecutive scoreless innings, the record he broke was that of another Dodgers ace that had stood for two decades prior.

Image

In fact, these Dodgers seem to have a habit of finding hurlers who make the throwing up of zeroes somewhat commonplace.

Image

Image

So for those considering grabbing Kershaw early, his recent history as well as the longer history of the LA franchise, bode well for a decent return in those pesky ratio categories.

Image

However, that's still nearly two months down the road. "Til then, our attention can be distracted by another hurler in Dodgers blue shown here in her Dodgers jersey......

Image

.....and here in the "jersey" of her other occupation of choice.
