Sound good? I suppose knowing the positions people took may lead to figuring out the player, but it will take away a little of the standard draft strategy when you know you can wait on a position because everyone has filled it in, etc.

All Time Baseball Draft
2011 All Time Draft:
You can draft any player who played in the AL or NL starting from 1901 to present (no Federal League players). We are using a 20 game minimum in season for the batting positions. If a player qualifies at multiple positions, you can move them around during the draft until you fill your roster.
For pitching, we are using two relief slots on the roster. A reliever needs to have 30 relief appearance to qualify ( – starts = relief appearances).
Format:
This is a standard 15 team Roto league. Each team will be drafting 23 players [14 hitters – 2 C, 1 1B, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 CO (1st or 3rd), 1 MI (2nd or SS), 5 OF, and 1 utility (any batter) and 9 pitchers (1500 innings minimum and 2 required RP’s)]. There are 10 categories – five hitting (BA, R, HR, RBI, and SB) and five pitching (W, ERA, WHIP, K’s, and SV’s). Each team will be ranked in each category from 1st to last. The top team will receive 15 points and the lowest will receive 1 point. Teams will split points if they are tied in a category. BA, ERA and whip will go to the furthest decimal point to break ties.
If an owner drafts a player in the early years and he has pitching and hitting stats, he will only get the stats for the position he decides to use him at. A hitter will receive no pitching stats and pitching will receive no hitting stats.
If a team fails to get enough innings, he will receive one point for all pitching categories. If a team selects a starting pitcher when he has only two relief slots left, he must make another selection.
This league will have running standings with the exception of rounds 5, 10, 15, and 23. In those rounds, we will be using a neutral party for our selection and the year of stats we are using. In each round a player will declare the player they select plus the year they want to use their stats.
We will be using Baseball-Reference.com for our stats. Their stats right or wrong will be our guideline.
Entry Fee: $140 (One player will play for free that handle the spread sheet details)
Payouts:
1st: NFBC Main event entry 2011 ($1400
2nd: NFBC $500 credit
This is a slow draft with a 24 hour clock. If a team is timed out, it will go to the next pick. After that player makes his pick, it will go back to the previous team and he will have two hours to make his pick.
Did I cover everything?

Thanks again for doing this Shawn, very excited for this format and can't wait for it to start. And with the all-star lineup competing here, whoever wins this draft will certainly have earned it.

Greg will run our KDS so please send him your preference. You have until tomorrow. If you don't send it in, you will get 1-15 and he won't chase anyone down for it. He will pick the draft slots on Wednesday. We will start on Saturday at 10 AM. This will allow owners a couple of days to format their plan of attack.

All Time Baseball Draft
As noted in my earlier post, I happen to agree with Dan's sentiment.
All Time Baseball Draft
Dan said it a lot better than I could have. Agree completely. If the blind rounds are an attempt to eliminate collusion...what stops one from thinking that certain people might share their blind round picks to certain other people? I feel there are less concerns going 1-21 open, 22-23 blind than to go with the proposed approach.
This is like the coolest concept ever for a contest (thanks Shawn!) - I just would like to see it played out with all the stats in front of everyone. Making the last two rounds blind would / should solve any of the other concerns. Either way I am in and can't wait for it to start. If we leave it the way it is currently set to run, I think we will be wishing for round 5 to be "open" by the time we get to it.

FWIW, the calculations will be carried out via Excel so the decimal places will be infinite -- I'll only display what can be handled comfortably on the forum, but trust me, the decimals are not going to decide this thing.

Yes Batting averaged will be broken by decimal points also.

Let me first say that the idea behind this draft is a good one and this sounds like it will be a lot of fun regardless of the format. For me, the most interesting part of this draft was the idea that all the stats are right in front of you and that as a drafter you can track how you are doing in relation to the other teams. I expected a lot of adjustments to go on as teams could see where they stood in various categories and make future picks to reflect where they needed to make up ground. It seems to me that having these "blind rounds" in the middle of the draft will take away some of the ability to track where your team stands. I doubt anyone will be able to predict who drafted what with enough accuracy for it to be helpful later on (especially in the earlier rounds). Without knowing where you stack up with other teams the whole draft becomes essentially blind and, in my opinion, some of the enjoyment will be taken out of the draft.
From speaking to Dave and based on some of the posts it seems that collusion is a concern for some of the drafters. I certainly see the possibility for that and cannot speak to how likely it is or is not. However, I believe these blinds rounds early in the draft are more trouble than they are worth and will confuse things, also taking away some of the strategy involved.
What I would propose is a compromise where we can have the best of both worlds. Why not draft normally until the last two rounds or so? You would still have the ability to know where you stand up until that point and by having the last two rounds blind you would both prevent collusion and introduce some uncertainty into the final rounds. Remember, we don't have a full season to enjoy our teams. As soon as the draft ends the competition will be over. Whatever we can do to make the experience as fun as possible we should do.
Just my thoughts. I look forward to participating in the draft regardless. I can understand where you are coming from and I really hate to use the word collusion in this. I think most players here are pretty sharp and as the draft goes on they can make an educated guess on what team might need what player and the possible year being chosen. I think the last two rounds will pretty much force teams into certain picks which makes it easier to track at the end.
The main goal is to openly eliminate the last couple of picks from knowing who will the league. I want them to draft the best possible player's to help their team. By having a wider range, it will it tougher, but you will have a pretty good idea what stats you will need to move up in any category.
This is the first run through this kind of draft and I might feel differently after the draft, but I think most will be surprised how close this will be at the end. We can change it for another draft, but for now I think this is a fair approach.

Trying to think of a method where everybody is comfortable, this is too good of a concept for it to fall short on account of something smallish.
What if the drafters are silent?
1-15 on the spreadsheet.
Draft picks are sent to me and I relay them to the group e-mail.
Greg would have to send me the kds. so I can e-mail the first 15, but after that, they would know they were up and be e-mailing me.
I'm running two drafts now, but one should end this weekend. So, I have time.
Just a thought.

The problem with my suggestion is the smack talk. Not as much fun smack talking a number!
But, you'd be able to see the updated stats to the end without fear of collusion or whatever it is called.
Like I said, just a thought.

[/QUOTE]I’m willing to accept the credit (or blame) for the idea of blinds rounds as I was the first to suggest them, although I was not the one to question how the final round might play out with respect to one drafter determining a winner.
I’ve also posted previously that I wasn’t insinuating that collusion was going to happen, I agree with a post that ToddZ made early on about the draft being public and how we all have reputations to maintain.
That being said, I just offered a possible solution of three blind rounds, it could have been any 3 rounds and Shawn kind of suggested 5,10,15,20 which then became 5,10,15,23.
But I also understand the sentiment of the post above. Trust me when I say this, I’m looking forward to this league more than any other I’ve been played in for a long time, except the Main Event. I can already tell you now that I would play in this league again after I win this one.
How this will play out, and what the best rules should be…… I don’t know. I’m willing to try anything that will still keep the draft on the MB. But I still like the idea of blind rounds the best.

Whatever you all choose to do, please do one thing - keep the draft on the Message Board. There will be many eyes having fun watching you guys pick and learning more about the history of the game. I plan on following every pick.

Shawn- your "official rules" say any AL or NL player is draftable. Are you intentionally excluding the ? Do we need to include players for a league that ran two years? All Time Baseball Draft
I think that if the Federal League players are listed in the record books along side all the other players who played in the AL and NL then there is no harm in using those players as well. I mean when you look at all time win leaders for example they are all listed just as all the AL and NL teams players are so I have no issue using those players as well.
