Take this with a grain of salt coming from a Missouri/Missouri drafter.

Lawrie had a nice little debutant ball last year, but he is young without much high minor league experience from which to draw any real conclusions yet, good or bad. He hit very well in AAA before he came up, but that was Vegas in the PCL. His HR per FB last year in his call up was something like 17%, which is pretty much unsustainable. To get Lawrie according to his ADP (47.71) on these seven drafts, you are using a late third, or early fourth round pick. In the same general area are Zimmerman (41.29) and Sandoval (48.43). Need a position scarcity pick with power? How about Uggla (52.86). Want power AND speed, how about BJ Upton (46.14).

In short, third base promises to be a wasteland after the first few, but do you really need to gamble such a high pick on such an unknown? The power/speed potential is attractive and gamblers will love this guy. Us mules will go for the more reliable performers.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I think Lawrie is for real. He's not a 30 HR guy, but his overall value sort of profiles as Shane Victorino at 3B. That's pretty good.

Looks correct to me - 50 rd no FAAB slow draft (right)- so you are going to see different strategies than your basic 30 rd FAAB league.

I don't understand why Utley is going so late. I think if there's one guy who will be a 2nd-3rd Round pick by March drafts, it'll be him. The potential is just too great. If you really think the past injuries are never going to go away, then by all means stay away from him. I just think the odds of a bounceback are too good to pass up.

Keep in mind these are all no FAAB draft so reliability is paramount, both health and performance. That said, there is no way he sniffs the 2nd or 3rd round in the NFBC regular ADP. Not only is there a health risk, his performance is in decline and it cannot be completely attributed to injuries, Might he be fall too far in some individual leagues? Probably. But no way is he going to be a climber with this group.

I would have started with the Philly in Glen's countdown.

Mike Stanton has crept up from around 26th overall to 23rd overall to 19th overall to now going 14th overall in two of the last three Slow Drafts I posted. Do you see Stanton as a first-rounder? Or do you think he will settle into the 19-23 area?

I am very curious to hear how experts feel that Miami's new stadium will play. I have heard it is more of a pitcher's park and if anything left-handed hitters will fare better than right-handed hitters. Grabbing him in R1 is very aggressive, with the more consistent bats there at that time. Not sure you can get any "value" out of that pick. (That last line was for Doughboys)

I have trouble picking a guy who does one thing right (HRs) that early. He isn't going to hit .300. Maybe (big maybe) he'll knock in 100 RBIs. He was pretty bad with RISP last year. He doesn't run. And he was average in runs scored.

The potential to improve is obviously there, but I wouldn't be stunned if he has a slight step back before taking that next step forward.

if i'm recalling correctly, i saw a stat on stanton that he had the most "true" hr's of anyone last year. and by that, he had the most hr's that would have gone out of any stadium, regardless of dimensions. of course, i'm a stanton homer, so i'm biased

I would imagine Stanton will go in the 1st round in a handful of drafts but taking him near the end of the 1st leaves so little room for profit. As an outfielder with his trouble contacting the ball, he's always going to be at least a risk on BA which means you're paying for 40/110 in the first round or even more. I personally expect his ADP to end up around 22 for main events.

Joe Sambito wrote:I am very curious to hear how experts feel that Miami's new stadium will play. I have heard it is more of a pitcher's park and if anything left-handed hitters will fare better than right-handed hitters. Grabbing him in R1 is very aggressive, with the more consistent bats there at that time. Not sure you can get any "value" out of that pick. (That last line was for Doughboys)
Has there been any writeup on the new stadium in Miami? Todd, have you looked into that yet or has Ron written anything about the new stadium yet? I too would be interested on how that will play this year.

Agree on all of the above. But this group isn't afraid to take risks, even in the first round.
