Hopefully Harper is one of them!

I'm not sure its a trick. I think most people know that he's a high risk/reward type player. He is far from a safe pick but hes a potential impact bat with a power/speed combo that is highly coveted. Swinging for the fences, especially in the later rounds, is certainly a viable strategy (I believe Lindy drafted both Justin Morneau and Chase Utley on his main event team).I agree that, at least for this year, his upside is going to be limited as he seems to struggle at first when moving up levels and obviously there is tons of uncertainty concerning his number of abs. You also have to roster him for maybe half the year before you see what he can do and that is not something I'd consider personally. Bottom line is that I agree with you about Harper for this year but I can also see why a player like him is appealing to others. If he does end up making an impact then he may be on the rosters of many teams who finish in the money.Gekko wrote:Not to belabor the point, however, I’ll debate the “2012 usefulness” of harper with anyone. Get all of your supporting documentation ready. Here’s mine and it’s factual:
He’s only 19 years old. In the history of MLB, how many 19 year old hitters have had successful seasons in the bigs?
Despite being a “reported” monster XBH guy, his numbers in AA and this spring training have severely underwhelmed.
Sure he can show growth this year, however that is nothing more than “hope”
Now, for the harper supporters, what factual evidence can you bring to the table that he will be a difference maker in 2012? Please produce it. My best guess is you’ll rattle off something like “the scouts say he’s the real deal”.
Clear case of the Hype Monster tricking people again. Happens every year.
