Re: Carlos Quentin is an idiot
I read this thread with some interest and some amusement.
Hopefully some of you will read the report/decsision when they are made public - the umpires report to the league includes the ejection from the game of Greinke as the instigator in the brawl. Obviously both players were at fault to some degree and both were ejected.

It's pretty clear, by the 8 game suspension of Quentin, who MLB is looking at as far as the instigator. I don't get how this is even an argument... History or no history... Greinke was not throwing at Quentin. And if you actually look at the replay closely, just after Quentin is hit, Greinke looks away in disgust, but then Quentin takes a few steps towards the mound.. Greinke was obviously pissed that he hit him.. the instigator was obviously Quentin and MLB made the appropriate action. Tell me the last time a hit batter had been suspended that long? Very much a message from MLB that there is no doubt it was unintentional otherwise why suspend Quentin and not Greinke? Hairston gets one game and that was due to a different fight altogether. MLB got this right.Captain Hook wrote:I read this thread with some interest and some amusement.

Re: Carlos Quentin is an idiot
Joe Torre was in charge of sentencing while his apprentice/victim Don Mattingly goes on a ridiculous rant about Quentin deserving a long suspension ... I'm sure that didn't have anything to do with it. Perhaps in baseball conflict of interest doesn't exist like it does everywhere else in humanity.BK METS wrote:It's pretty clear, by the 8 game suspension of Quentin, who MLB is looking at as far as the instigator. Cry for Greinke all you want Alan, no one knows what was going through that nut's mind. Perhaps he was off his meds that night. As KJ mentioned he surely seemed infatuated w/ CQ's family jewels in the brawl. (ESPN's Grantland has some pics to confirm this) Meanwhile afterwards tough guy Kemp goes after Quentin in the parking lot. Well, he yelled some things in his direction knowing full well that others would break them up before anything really happened. But still, he was the instigator there and I expect nothing less from a guy who has a huge tattoo of granma & granpa on his chest

Re: Carlos Quentin is an idiot
Quentins approach was the same as it always is. He was diving towards the plate and it leaves him in poor position to dodge pitches. As for Greinke "shootin his mouth off", I would too if I were him. That is how ridiculous it was on Quentin's part to think he was throwing at him. If I were Greinke, I would have said something for sure that would tell him how stupid he is for thinking he was getting thrown at there.
And this is coming from a guy that got sent to the hospital by getting beaned in the head intentionally in legion ball. Different story for a different day, but it is amazing how you can get frozen when it is coming at your head. And like KJ mentioned, we were going to handle our business. That kid is lucky the 2nd meeting got rained out. My hard throwing best friend at the time was scheduled to go. Having grown up since, I am glad it did. Throwing at people can be extremely dangerous.

rockitsauce wrote:Something lost in all this is the stupidity of baseballs' unwritten rules. In the 1st inning on an 0-2 pitch Marquis threw a pitch up and in to Kemp. Scully mentioned this when the brawl broke out as possible retaliation for that pitch. This stupid you hit our guy or nearly do, so I hafta throw at one of your guys is why these feuds happen and fester longer than a Hatfield/McCoy reunion.
We've already established the history b/w CQ & Greinke. That and Greinke shootin' his mouth off are why this got escalated. They say Quentin crowds the plate, but did anyone here actually watch the game? That wasn't no lean-in job, that pitch was so far inside he woulda had to be Houdini to avoid being hit.
These umpires are so horrible you're basically compelled to crowd the plate to some degree. Did anyone see Zobrist get rung up the other day ? That pitch was at least a ft off the plate and Pierzinski had to catch it w/ his glove down in the dirt. Tonight Miggy Montero endured a similar experience as he was called out on a pitch just as far outside, just not in the dirt. Horrible. I didn't need the little strikezone box to confirm what I already knew, those were NOT strikes. W/ umpiring like that I'd move in abit to guard the outer half of the plate too. Who determined that pitchers owned the inner half anyway?
Now w/ the Reyes injury we can move on to something new. Who thinks 2B should be suspended as long as Reyes is out![]()
YAY Josh Donaldson !

That he wasn't crowding the plate. And he certainly wasn't diving towards the plate.
I may be in the minority in defending Quentin, (and I wish he'd have just taken his base and then got the last laugh by scoring) but Greinke isn't blameless in this mess. I don't care what the score/count was, NOBODY but Greinke knows whether he was throwing intentionally at him, and he sure as hell ain't gonna admit it.

I have no reason to cry for Greinke. I don't have him on any team that matters and I am not a Dodger fan. I am an outsider looking in, seeing a guy who has, far and away, been hit more times than anyone in baseball (232 times in the majors and minors), has been hit 3 or more times by 3 pitchers, and is the leadoff guy in a 1 run game, getting hit on a 3-2 pitch. No one will ever know for sure, I agree.rockitsauce wrote:Cry for Greinke all you want Alan, no one knows what was going through that nut's mind. Perhaps he was off his meds that night. Re: Carlos Quentin is an idiot
from cbs.sportsline
"San Diego outfielder Carlos Quentin will likely not be on the field for the start of another series against the Dodgers Monday, as U-T San Diego reports the league is expected to push Quentin's appeal through quickly. Quentin charged the mound and caused Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke to fracture his left collarbone in the teams' previous meeting Thursday, resulting in an eight-game suspension.
The league office hopes to have the appeal resolved and Quentin serving his suspension before the series begins, in order to avoid any potential escalation.
"Major League Baseball is very aware of the situation," a source in the league office said Saturday. "I think everyone would like to see a little time between the incident and Quentin’s next appearance at Dodger Stadium."
According to the report, Quentin could possibly have his suspension reduced Sunday, but the situation is expected to be resolved in time for him to miss the series. If not, Quentin is expected to drop his appeal and begin serving the suspension Monday anyway."
