SP – Andrew Cashner – Padres
Cashner is a power groundball pitcher who also posses a devastating slider, when it’s on. In his 6 of his last 7 starts, he threw his slider with significantly more frequency than at any point in the season.

The results:
6GS; 2Wins; 8.5K9; 1.01BB9; 0.20HR9; 1.21ERA; 0.72WHIP

Obviously if he can maintain the feel of his slider, he will blow out his adp.

SP – Jose Fernandez – Marlins
On June 14th, 2013, the Marlins took the reigns off Jose Fernandez. It was his first game with over 100 pitches. It was also the game where the Marlins unleashed Fernandez’s wipeout slider on a consistent basis. From June 14th through the end of the season, Fernandez threw the slider at least 9.6% of the time in all 16 games. Prior to June 14th, he only managed that feat in 2 of 12 games.

His stats from 4/7/13 – 6/13/13:
12GS; 3Wins; 9.2K9; 3.4BB9; 0.83HR9; 3.17ERA; 1.15WHIP

His stats from 6/14/13 – 9/11/13:
16GS; 9Wins; 10.1 K9; 2.8BB9; 0.34HR9; 1.59ERA; 0.88WHIP
What makes these numbers especially impressive is the caliber of teams he played:
1 game @ Coors and 8 games vs playoff teams (STL-2; ATL-2; PIT-2; LAD-1; CLE-1)

On top of all of this, Fernandez has displayed good groundball tendencies and also plays half his games in the best pitcher park in baseball.

I look forward to seeing your teams because you always have strong and sometimes unconventional opinions and stick to them in the draft. Then, you aren't shy about stating who you took and why. Your teams are always very interesting because there are always several players that are outside the norm. Thanks for posting.

1B - Yonder Alonso - Padres
Alonso suffered a fractured hand in 2013 and impacted his numbers from June through the rest of the season. At the end of the season, he couldn’t even swing a bat without pain. Pro-rating his stats from healthy April/May puts his projection at:
Computed at 550AB threshold: 64 runs; 17 hr; 84 rbi; 9 sb; .284 avg

Those projections are comparable to what Eric Hosmer is expected to do. Hosmer is going in the 4th round, while Alonso is going in the 20th round

In addition, according to BaseballHQ, PETCO yields 30% more HR to left-handed hitters than the average park. With Alonso being left-handed, there may be room to top 20 hr.

Here is a write up I did January 2013 (looks like i was a year early)...

Erasmo Ramirez – Seattle Mariners
• 22 year-old made 8 starts in 2012
• Stats from 8 starts (K9 7.9, BB9 1.5, HR9 1.0, ERA 3.64, WHIP 0.98)
• Significantly increased % of change-ups thrown in last 6 starts
• Stats from last 6 starts (K9 7.8, BB9 1.4, HR9 0.7, ERA 2.37, WHIP 0.76)
• Swinging strike % for final month of season was 13.5%. In the past 10 years, there have been 50 SP (with more than 20IP) who registered a Sept/Oct swinging strike % of more than 13.0%. To determine the profile of pitcher most resembling Erasmo (based on swinging strike %), I removed any pitcher with a BB9 over 2.5 and any pitcher over 27 years old.

These are the players that remain (sorted by Age):
Name Team Year Age SwStr% BB9
Erasmo Ramirez Mariners 2012 22 13.50% 1.59
Mark Prior Cubs 2004 23 13.10% 1.69
Yu Darvish Rangers 2012 25 14.10% 1.72
Yovani Gallardo Brewers 2011 25 14.00% 2.03
Johan Santana Twins 2004 25 18.70% 1.58
Cole Hamels Phillies 2009 25 14.10% 1.94
Johan Santana Twins 2005 26 14.20% 1.88
Max Scherzer Tigers 2012 27 14.60% 1.64
CC Sabathia Brewers 2008 27 14.20% 1.48
Johan Santana Twins 2006 27 15.00% 1.78

If I hadn’t removed SP over 27 years old, the list would have also included these players:

Name Team Year Age SwStr% BB9
Cole Hamels Phillies 2012 28 15.10% 1.66
Javier Vazquez White Sox 2006 29 14.30% 2.25
Brad Radke Twins 2003 30 13.10% 0.26
Javier Vazquez White Sox 2007 30 14.50% 1.32
Jason Schmidt Giants 2003 30 14.20% 1.59
Pedro Martinez Red Sox 2003 31 14.10% 1.64
Javier Vazquez Braves 2009 32 13.70% 1.87
Curt Schilling Red Sox 2004 33 14.00% 1.66
Pedro Martinez Mets 2007 35 13.50% 2.25
Randy Johnson Diamondbacks 2003 39 16.40% 2.12
Randy Johnson Diamondbacks 2004 40 16.10% 1.25
John Smoltz Braves 2007 40 13.90% 2.37

Gekko, I'm going to have to disagree with your assessment.

Yonder Alonso hit 273 with 9 home runs in 549 AB in his last full season 2012 and 281 with 6 homeruns in 334 AB last year.

He's on a short leash in San Diego. If he doesn't produce by the end of April middle of May, he'll be at best in a platoon.

We shall see. We'll revisit this thread in May.

I do like your Marte pick. IMO. Marte = Ellsbury. Wanted him on all my teams.

Good Luck with your team. Let Play Ball!!

The one thing Mark does better than me and probably most everyone else is that he grabs the players he wants earlier than anyone else even if that means going 2-3 rounds earlier than adp. I will take a guy that I really want earlier than usual but sometimes I get greedy. I try to wait just a little too long and it's painful when it backfires.

Maybe someday. Dude is a freshly excreted, liquidy, steaming turd of a human being. Alonso sucks too.
