I'll bet Altuve could have been on the minds of some drafters.
I can only speak for myself. Altuve had a splendid year this year, but we're drafting for next year.

Let's say that he does repeat his numbers from this year, next year. Batting average is through the roof and we have a leg-up in the steals category.
Besides that, we have a guy who is only 20ish in runs scored. 100ish in rbi. 200ish in home runs.
Even though he excels in two categories, he remains only a two and one half category player.
I considered him. But I would have to get this year's numbers and maybe a little bit more to truly consider him a first round pick.
That said, he did go early in the second round. I believe he will be a consensus second round pick for the coming year.
The value of a player is not solely based on the categories he excels at. Other than runs scored, Altuve's year matches Ichiro's first season pretty closely, at a time when offense was more abundant:

Altuve '14: .340/85/7/58/56
Ichiro '01: .350/127/8/69/56

It's a matter of taste. I never felt Ichiro was a first rounder either....

Really curious to see where high risk/reward guys like Tulo, Cargo, Braun, Kemp, Puig, etc., get taken. Also curious about TJ or TJ risk pitchers like Harvey and Tanaka.

Keep the results coming. I participated in the first 50-rounder last year by email and loved the unpredictability and lack of any ADP info. (Needless to say, Dan, please count me in on this if you do it again.)

Of course, we will do the early 50 rounder again.
To me, it is a little bit of a different animal than a 30 rounder.
There is also 14 guys who want revenge on you for taking the title this year! :D

Very glad to hear it. I'd expect nothing less and am already looking forward to it. :D

I definitely agree with you - the 50-rounders are very different animals than the 30-rounders.

I was really wondering where Brantley, Rizzo and Vmart would go, thanks for sharing!
I have drafted Brantley every year in most leagues and like other owners was blown away by his season, I expect him to fall back a bit next year. Rizzo in my opinion is just scratching the surface of his potential and Vmart had a great year, but I won't be drafting him at all next year based on where he will be drafted.

Really interesting picks so far. Some of the "new" guys seem a little high to me, but perhaps I'm the one who has to adjust his thinking. There also seems to be some attractive SPs waiting to be snatched up. Wouldn't surprise me to see a lot of pitchers go in Rounds 4 and 5.

A couple of thoughts. I don't think Cano is a first round pick anymore. More like mid 2nd round. I agree that I wouldn't think Blackmon is 2nd round and in fact I think Dickerson should go higher than Blackmon. There are 2 prominent names that I would have expected to have gone by now... interested in seeing where they go.

Completely agree - a few surprises and definitely a few "finally he got taken." I was curious about when Hamilton and Gordon would go off the board. To me, I am really surprised that Wainwright lasted until 4.6 - what does the guy have to do year after year? If completely healthy, Fielder at 4.1 and Darvish at 4.13 look like really good picks. I agree with Kluber joining the elite SPs - I was figuring somewhere in the late 3rd round or 4th round for him. Perhaps because of his (relatively) advanced age, I'm not totally surprised with AGon going at 4.14, but he had a really, really good year and should hit third again, presumably with Gordon and Puig in front of him.

Wainwright and Hamilton were the guys I was waiting on. I believe they will go higher, as the drafts move forward. Shocked that Wainwright didn't go higher. I can see why people are still skeptical with Hamilton, but Wainwright appears a lock to be top pitcher barring injury.

From my perspective, I think that Wainwright goes higher in other drafts.
Only one pitcher was drafted in the first round.
Only one in the second.
Only four in the third round.
I don't think that pace will ring true with most other drafts. Or, maybe it will.... :)
For my part, I went pitcher-heavy last year and got burned by Tommy John a bit. I'm guessing I'm not alone.

I think guys in general got burned by pitchers in 2014, but pitching in my opinion is still pretty deep compared to hitters. I always found it easier to find a decent pitching option on my bench last year when somebody went down, but my hitters got a bit sketchy! Thanks for sharing, its great food for thought! :D

Love that 4th round! Might be better than rounds 2 and 3. I suppose you can say that every year. Chapman's numbers are ridiculous. How many games did he miss? What would be his extrapolated totals? Thanks for posting this stuff Dan! Can't wait for baseball. Is it bad that I dont even care about the post season games? Ha. Not sure I like that.

Thanks for sharing these. They make very interesting reading as we gear up for a new drafting season.

A few quick thoughts on Round 5: (1) I like Dozier at 5.2 - he has the capability to go 20/20 again, or even 25/25, while scoring a bunch of runs on a Twins offense that looked decent at times last year (he'd go in the third round or higher if he can get his batting average up); (2) also like Arenado at 5.3; might be a little high but given the dearth of attractive 3B options, seems like good value (whoops, sorry for using the "v" word); (3) if you want to invest a high pick on a #1 C (some don't), I like Lucroy at 5.9 (I'd rather have Lucroy at 5.9 than Posey at 1.15); (4) interesting seeing Votto and C. Davis going back-to-back as I think they might be two of the tougher players to gauge this year; and (5) Heyward is kind of a boom/bust player - I think of him as Bryce Harper light - both of them have the talent/potential to play well above their draft positions, but due to injuries and other factors, they typically have delivered numbers well below their draft positions; sooner or later you expect them to put up great numbers, but will it be in 2015?

Round Six
This will be the last of the installments from the PreMature League.
I joked during this round that it looked like the 'redemption round' with so many bounceback possibilities. It could be said that only Harrison, Teheran, Walker, and possibly Robertson lived up to expectations. The rest either wallowed, got hurt, did not get enough time, or just plain sucked.
Anyway, here is the sixth round.....

6/1 David Wright, 3B, NYM
6/2 David Robertson, P, NYY
6/3 Matt Holliday, OF, STL
6/4 Jason Kipnis, 2B, CLE

6/6 Dustin Pedroia, 2B, BOS
6/7 Carlos Santana. 3B, CLE
6/8 Julio Teheran, SP, ATL
6/9 Mark Trumbo, 1B, OF, ARZ
6/10 Christian Yelich, OF, MIA
6/11 Neil Walker, 2B, PIT
6/12 Jay Bruce, OF, CIN
6/13 Wil Myers, OF, TAM
6/14 Rusney Castillo, OF, BOS
6/15 Josh Harrison, 3B, OF, PIT

6/5 Gregory Polanco, OF, PIT
6/6 Dustin Pedroia, 2B, BOS
6/7 Carlos Santana. 3B, CLE
6/8 Julio Teheran, SP, ATL
6/9 Mark Trumbo, 1B, OF, ARZ
6/10 Christian Yelich, OF, MIA
6/11 Neil Walker, 2B, PIT
6/12 Jay Bruce, OF, CIN
6/13 Wil Myers, OF, TAM
6/14 Rusney Castillo, OF, BOS
6/15 Josh Harrison, 3B, OF, PIT
Perhaps I'm just a glutton for punishment, but I'd take Jay Bruce at 6.12 every time.

I thought I would too, Mike.....before the draft.
But the main and over riding thought for me in this draft as it developed,is just how friggin' deep it is.
Maybe it is all the young players doing well. Maybe it is the hopeful or expected bounceback years from the many that were hurt or did not perform. Or a combination of both.
But believe me, the talent depth is a little different than in past years.
We may love the starts of our draft this coming year, but looking to the left and right from our chairs this year, those other drafters will have a splendid beginning as well.

These six rounds featured only two catchers, five Closers, and only 17 Starters.
The 'Two Aces' approach that many employed in the past couple of years was hardly used here.
There is a wealth of offense, combined with the cloud of Tommy John.

I'll send out the e-mails for the 50 round draft this weekend and I'm hoping to get that underway by the following weekend.
Thanks for the comments everybody.

Just a heads up to all of the owners who drafted in the very first 2015 Draft Champions League: Your league is now set up and all draft picks are loaded. Please check your rosters and let me know if we need any adjustments. Some of the players you folks drafted in October haven't been drafted yet in any of the other NFBC leagues, so we'll need to add them!! ;) You were ahead of your time in a number of ways!!

Email me at [email protected] if you see anything that needs to be changed. We have plenty of time to do those. Thanks all for setting the table on this season and good job. We'll run the charges this week and you'll have plenty of time to set that first Starting Lineup. Enjoy and thanks.
