I have to know...did you have a nickname when you played, Dan?

I never liked mine..."Shityousuck" Edwards just never felt endearing...
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

'Oso'.
It meant bear in Spanish.
What I think they really did ,was call me 'Oso' out loud and then finished the sentence quietly.
Such as, "Oh so...... fat" or "Oh so...... stupid".

'Scrabble' for Rzepczynski is my favorite nickname.

Political correctness has killed great nicknames. And even how ballplayers are addressed.
If Mordecai Brown had been a modern day pitcher, most stories would start with...
"Tragically, Mordecai lost two fingers.
For Brown, he felt it made him a better pitcher with more 'stuff''
And for certain, he would not be 'Three Fingers' today.

While kids and a nation were calling Joe DiMaggio 'Joltin Joe', his teammates were calling him 'Wop' or 'That Dago'.
The way of the world in that time.
DiMaggio exuded Italian.
It wasn't derogatory. If anything it was a term of endearment that most folks don't understand now.
Heck, back in those days, most Americans wished they were Italian.
They had good looks, bravado attitudes, and were very athletic.
On top of that, they came from homes that smelled like a pizzeria.

I have some of my own nicknames that I've given players. Mostly for fantasy baseball.
Some are not PC. Oh well. :D

A J 'D L' Pollock... because of his penchant for that list and the initials just go on....

Javier 'Joan' Baez...mostly because I see 'J Baez' and it reminds me of the singer and some days, he hits like a 'Joan'.

'Surfboard' Motter because of the blond, long hair

Caveman Gattis....his swing and look

Annabelle Sanchez...Until his last few starts, Annabelle fit better than Anibal

'Fluke' Ellsbury....Fluke season, fluke injuries, fluke if in the lineup...take your pick

Aaron 'Herman' Judge...I can't look at him and not think of Herman Munster

John 'Sad Sacky' Lackey...Is there any player who looks like he doesn't enjoy his job more than Lackey?

'Whatever' Cano...Nobody plays the game with more nonchalance

'Pee Wee' Pedroia...We can't seem to use that nickname any longer. It fits Pedroia to a T.

'Sweat' Strasburg... You can always tell when it's hot on the field with the 'Sweat' Barometer

'Look' Puig....When he does something good, he wonders why you not looking at him....When he does something bad, he wonders why you are looking at him

'Butter' Seager...So smooth

'VooDoo' Dahl...Somebody has one of David and keeps poking holes
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
