Not at all. Others have won with no closers. It's a matter of execution, and we think we got the NL right this time. In the AL, we will have plenty of SB's and SP's o trade for whatever needs we have at the AS break.
The thing is, we actually want closers, but not at the prices paid. They came down a tad again this year, but not enough...
Which ones were too expensive?
Hoffman $15
Lidge $15
Capps $17
Marmol $ 9
B. Wilson $10
Izzy $15
C. Cordero $13
Lyon $9 (Pena was $7 so both for $16)
Gregg $12
All of them. Take out any of our "$15-16" SP's and replace with one of these, and we lose points in W and K. Why can't you comprehend this?
We already have TWO points in Saves (over Rotowire), why give up all those W and K's out of Lilly for 2 more points?
Take out Lilly and we go from 45 to 42 P points. Lose 5 in W, 4 in K, gain 5 in SV and 1 in ERA
Take out any of the worthless middle relievers and take a flier on a starter and you "may" lose some in ERA or WHIP, but not in K's or or wins. You need to do a better balance is all, why cant you comprehend that?

Greg:
The NFBC was an innovative idea. Can you talk a bit about the origins? Where did the idea come from? How long did it take from inception to conception to fruition? How tough was it to get the first event organized in terms of sponsorship, locations, advertisement, etc? It seems like the first sign-ups before there was much of a message board must have been hardest to get. Did you just do that by advertising in the mag or did you rely on friends to join and chat up the message board. Thanks!

Where would you take Pujols in the first round of a 15 teamer?

The "worthless" MR add up to about 1 1/2 VERY GOOD starters, ensuring TOP scores in WHIP and ERA.
Why risk that with some $1 WHIP/ERA blowup azzclown?

UFS, I think the fact your answering a question directed at Greg is kinda silly. The only reason you were at the labr draft was because Greg brought you. I have no problem with that. But it doesn't make you Greg's spokesman.

Neal Great question!
#1... Go over ALL players together before the draft so that you can resolve different opinions before you get to the table, not at the table.
#2... Just divvy up the responsibilities to each other's strengths. Like, I take the roster management during the draft.
During the draft, I update Greg on where we stand in money in relation to others, what our needs are, "what if scenarios" like we can do "Furcal and Willingham", or "Byrnes and Jack Wilson" What do you think?. Updates on position battles with guys that can spend as much or more as we can on the same need. Like... "great, he just spent $3 on that MI, that's now $2 less he can spend on the CI we both need."
With all the dynamics of an auction, squeezing the efficiency out of every last dollar spent is key. It's very hard to get it all perfect, so don't expect it.

With Colorado using the humidor, do you think someone would be tempted to use non-humidor balls when Colorado bats and the frozen ones when their pitchers pitch?
I'm amazed that major league baseball allows the opportunity for manipulation. They have enough problem with steriods. I miss the good old days when your pitchers get pound in Colorado!!!

Neal Make lots of side bets, money brings greater clarity to risk/reward.

I don't want to steal a question meant for Greg, but I read that balls at all stadiums are under tight security. The security at Coors is at the top of the priority list for MLB.
MLB has deemed the humidor a success and in the MLB.com story stated that all 30 venues had balls stored in controlled environments.
That theory did come up during the Rockies "perfect storm" last fall.

Greg - What's your thought on Hanley Ramirez? Would you still have him in your top 2-3 players in the NFBC format or does his "injury risk" drop him on your sheet? - Pete
OK - So I'm not as good as I thought I was; but at least I am consistent.

What is with this "..closers - who cares" attitude?
And even if you adopt that, why not get some relief pitchers who might be in a position to get some saves and get you a point or two? You guys bought three $15-16 SP in the NL when you could have had two of them and one decent secondary closer for the same money. Yeah, nobody loves our strategy. Such is life. We could have left Ted Lilly off our roster for Jason Isringhausen as both were $15-$16 bids. We chose more K's and more W's and a shot at Kerry Wood for $4. We grabbed five RPers with high Ks and low ERA and WHIP. We'll see if it works.

Trust me, we're trying to win it all and hopefully our $16 bid on a third top starter will pay more than a $16 closer. We'll see if it works.

Hoffman $15
Lidge $15
Capps $17
Marmol $ 9
B. Wilson $10
Izzy $15
C. Cordero $13
Lyon $9 (Pena was $7 so both for $16)
Gregg $12
Yikes. I leave and all hell breaks out. They were all too expensive if we wanted a third top starter. So we have Kerry Wood at $4. Let's see if he closes. The team that has Marmol already wants to trade us for Wood, so I think this can work out in the NL.
Now settle down folks or I'm leaving my own chat.

Neal The big key is to go over every player before the draft and agree on how you feel about each guy beforehand. Argue about the merits of each guy good and bad beforehand and then know what you're going to do at the table. You can't look at each other at that point and say "do you like him?" And put a value on every single player and know if you're willing to pay for him a few bucks above or below when he's called up.
John and I know exactly what we want to pay for each player before the draft and then John uses RotoLab software during the auction and that changes the values as the auction moves along. We price enforce along with other teams, but I can honestly say that we never got stuck with a player we didn't want this weekend. You have to keep pushing the prices up, but be careful with that, too. Auctions are a BLAST. You'll love it.

Hey Greg: Serious question when do you believe we will see the first 1,000,000 fantasy event whether football or baseball. The world serious of poker has done it with $10,000 buy in so why not you guys at $5,000 or 10,000 buy in you can set the standard and blow guys like the WCOFF away. Baffled why it has not happened yet.
Thanks,
Joe Martino
