Sounds like a question for King of Queens! I don't believe so, Dan. At least not in the main event -- just not enough playing time to make enough of an impact. Guys like Joey Gathright come to mind.

Now if the 4th outfielder were to become a starter, that's a completely different story.

Unless we're talking about Gathright! :D
Matt Diaz 07?
As I recall, he was a platoon OF that become a full-time OF when the Braves gave up on Willie Harris.
Kinda the other way around....I believe Diaz started, Harris came on the scene about a month into the season...played over his head...returned to being Willie Harris, all the while Diaz was hitting very well.

But what do us lowly satellite participants know? ;)
Mr. Lowly Satellite Dude,

Are you trying to tell me that Diaz was usable when he was a platoon or 4th outfielder?

If so, I have a Pierre to sell you.

Signed,

Mr. Lofty Main Event Participant
Was only saying the job belonged to Diaz...Harris came on the scene and then flopped.

You couldn't pay me to take Pierre....what a wasted pick...kinda like Chone Figgins IMO.

Melky Cabrera was awfully productive last year as a fourth OF - I think it takes a team that is up there in years and somewhat injury prone (e.g., Yankees last year).

But with Matsui and Damon going down so much and the dh in the AL, it just doesen't seem right to classify him as a 4th of'er.

Guess the only fantasy worthy 4th outfielder would have to have luck like Cabrera did last year. Pierre will get plenty of pinch running ops, but unless there is an injury or Ethier goes cold, my guess is that he will start getting dropped in leagues.

Besides experience, there is little to differentiate him from Nyger Morgan or Joey Gathright. He is a defensive liability. And with his salary, a trade will not happen till the lesser salaries of Lofton and Crisp are explored.
I'd call him a 4th OF last season. He logged 358 ABs. By month, 54/ 59/ 55/ 53/ 70/ 67. he got more ABs in the final 2 months because he has hitting well over 300, but still never played everyday. He had almost as many ABs vs righties as he did lefties, so he wasnt a strict platoon either. Willie Harris, meanwhile, never had less than 47 ABs during the final 5 months. Call the two of them 4A and 4B.

The more relevant question, does 338 12HR/4SB and 44/45 quality as productive? Probably borderline.

As a Victor Martinez owner in 3 satelite leagues, it appears to me that the injury is not as severe as we thought. From what I have read he is day to day and won't be put on the DL. Can any local Indians fan give us more info he has heard?

Appearances can be deceiving. I'm in the other camp and think no news is bad news. Maybe I'm just drinking Jackstraws conspiracy coffee. :D

He will be back soon. Nothing seriously broken or hurt. Just a virus. 15 day recovery the doctor says.
