Shawn,

In talking to you I know you are not a guy who makes player projections per se, but as you go through your draft and are chasing your targets, who's numbers are you using to reach your goals? Are they numbers you have come up with yourself you just haven't written down on paper?

to all baseball mafia guys: in reading these boards the last 2 years, i always see people talk about a fantasy teams "ace" or their "3rd starter" or "4th starter". it confuses me. when i draft my pitchers, i look at them all as " inventory"- i put 9 in my lineup each week and all of their stats count. am i playing the game wrong? can i denote my " 4th starter" my "ace", and get more points? was cliff lee jurneys "7th starter" when he plucked him off the waiver wire? to me- he looked like an "ace". also- if i pitch 7 starters and 2 closers- how can i have a " 6th starter" when baseball teams don't. is that why i lose every year- or is it the players i draft and pickup. thanks

Shawn:

1. Where did you go wrong last year in the main event?

2. Who wins the 100K first, you or Jupinka?

3. Will Rich Harden be on your team this year?

CCD,

There used to be a fantasy baseball offseason. Now you better be familiar with all 40 man rosters by mid-december. Do you find this tedious or does finding Shandler's List under your tree still create the warm fuzzys like it did back in the early 90's ?

Since im a little slow with the computer and im on lunch i can bang a couple out now. Also my son Dom who many of you know has a high school basketball ball game tonight, which will knock me off the boards from 7 to 9.30.Dom is a captain and play's power foward. The center on the team is Jamal Horn who's father played a few year's with the Boston RedSox ,Sam Horn.Last year i played in four big money leagues in the NFBC.I finished 2nd in Vegas 3 with 110 point's.I finished tied for 3rd in the 1000 dollar satelitte league ,and finished 3rd in the Vegas Super draft.Just couldnt get the funds up to play in the ultimate last year.I also finished 5th in the American league auction 1300 dollar league which ended my two year run and worst off no money for 5th place.

Overall i didnt win a league but i was still able to win money.Just wanted to fill you all in on my season last year.

LONG GONE Eddie Gillis

Between round's 10 to 15 who is a must own on draft day.

Some players i will be looking for will be closer's.

Matt Capps is one closer you can get in these rounds and i love his control only walking 5 batters in 54 innings. Also a whip of 0.97 very impressive and only 25 years old.

Frank Francisco is another with 83 k's in 63 innings show's me he has the DOM to excel in this roll. Also a whip of 1.15 shows he has control .

Both these guy's have the job and i think they will keep it all year which means at

least 30 saves each.

If i can get my saves in these rounds then i can go hitters in rounds 5 to 10 or a stud pitcher or two.Saves are saves and as long as you get them that's all that matters.

Josh Johnson is another player ild be keeping my eye and is just 25 years old and could be a top 15 pitcher in 2010.

Eddie,

You made a great September run in LV3 to cash last year.

Do you have a specific plan for September in mind before the season even starts?

What moves did you make that led to the great run?

LONG GONE Eddie

Who should i draft after round 18 that will give me 20 save's this season.

Fernando Rodney i just got him in the 26th round in the KJ Duke league .With the signing Brandon Lyon for over 4 million a lot of people thing Lyon will be handed the job.I dont think so ,i think Rodney will be given first shot and he has the tools to do the job striking out 49 batters in 40 innings last year.Rodney has a 96 fast ball and a great change up.It's all in Rodney's head if he can get some confidence he will be a nice late pick.

Tyler Walker

Seattle just signed Walker and i believe he hasa shot to close.Last yer he did strike out 49 in 53 innings and did save 23 games for San Fran in the 2005 season.

Rafael Soraino

Grant Balfour

Balfour had lights out numbers last year and Soraino is a couple blown saves away from Gonzalez in getting the closer job in Atlanta.

POPPY TOOTH

Gillis how does your strategy differ when assmbling your roster- do you look to point any categories or focus more heavily on hitter overpitching, etc.

Poppy I really believe in balance in any league ,i dont ever wont to pack in a category. So i would treat the ultimate just like the main. Now every draft is different if im in round 14 and realize im very low in steals i will still tryand get some and hopefully can beat three or four guys in steal's.Although i must say it is more important to get balance in the main then a league like the ultimate .If you finish last in saves in the ultimate you can still win te league but if you finish last in the main you wont win the 100.000 dollar's.Still i alway's go for balance as long as i can in a draft but sometimes you just have to adapt theway the draft is going.

Hey John

I thought i had a pretty solid draft but had to wait on guys like Liriano to get going and Ryan Howard had a better 2nd half. The waiver wire was also big picking up Ricky Nolasco .Grabbing Sota in the 11th round in the Super and this league was a big hit.Ervin Santana was a sleeper pick of mine last year and getting him in the 24th round was solid GOLD.Actually just never giving up and grinding it out got me a 2nd place finish and a good year.[but not great]

Eddie, in your opinion, what's the most important quality in getting an edge over your opponent in regards to drafting?

Is it a. Having the ability and focus to draft a balanced team through all 10 categories? - b. Having a safe draft and taking small risks in the right spots? or c. being able to maximize your last 15 picks because of solid preparation?

[/QUOTE]Well, I'm curious more what has made Eddie so successful. Out of those 3 things, which does he place the most emphasis on in order to get that edge.

To Eddie and Shawn...

Example..

You have pick 9 in a ME league in Vegas...you draft in LV4 in 2009.

If you drafted instead in LV12...how close do you think your team would look if different players fell to you each round?

In other words...do you have a goal of getting one of three players in round 1 (pick 9), then target a few more rounds the same way...but at the same time have plans B and C and D for when a coveted player you had not planned for drops to you. (or a player you thought would drop, does not).

Could you draft pick 9 in two Vegas main event drafts...and have similar teams...or would they be very different?

What would be your guess as to how many of the first 10 rounds would be the same?

11-20 same?

21-30 same?

Are the players you snag later on (the sleeper core) the ones you'd see more often on both teams?

~Lance

Shawn,

Long Gone asked me if I could write in and ask you who you are ideally planning to draft in rounds 2 through 30 of the main event. Oh, he also wants to know who you like in round one.

What are you bottom 5 kds picks this year? Shawn: Promise me you will not bet any Superfectas on that Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Eddie: Are you bringing Dom again this year??

Jesse: Beard or no beard by March 20th?? I see some of the WCOFF guys are saying you're starting to look like Emil.

Dustin: Two rounds of golf while in Vegas or THREE?? :D

Thanks again guys for doing this tonight. Hopefully we'll have a lot of folks online at 7 p.m. EST and have a fun, fun chat. As we've seen in the past, Shawn isn't afraid to tackle any tough question and Jesse & the Gang will jump in with their opinions as well. This is a great opportunity to ask some serious questions and get some honest answers. Thanks all and good luck.

IVE got a few minutes before Dom's game.GREG Ild sneak your question in first weather or not Dom will be attending Vegas this March.

Well its up in the air because his mother my wife the beautiful Mehgan went to the WCOFF event last year and now has found out she can get a vacation out of my fantasy addiction.Dom is now 18 and isnt thrilled that mom will be watching him in Vegas.

I think he will still make it.

What did you like about the new Duke mlbc/10 league.

What were some of your favorite pick's.

I had a lot of fun in this format and trying to stay in a 800 dollar budget was hard.My partner Lance [aka sportsbettinman] and myself ended up at 944 so we went over a little.

As for picks getting Manny Rameriz in the 8th round pick 14 was sweet.Yes we paid 185 for him but still if Manny was signed he wouldnt have lasted this long.I really like are top 5 pitchers

Billingsley

Volquez

Josh Johnson

Oliver Perez

Gil Meche

I think my biggest mistake was passing on Michael Young and he went right after my pick to you.The more i thought about that we should have paid for Young as not much at short stop after him.

Whats the most important quality in getting on edge over your opponent in regards to drafting.

Crazy having the ability and focus to draft a balanced team through all ten categories.

Balance is the key and every draft is different you need to know when to stick to your plan or take a value pick like someone who should be gone in round 10 but is still there in round 14. BANG
