Proposed Auction League Rules Change

Post by ToddZ » Wed Nov 17, 2004 3:44 am

For clarification, this

Hey, how about we use our FAAB to bid on our reserve spot?

Um, never mind.was meant a little rib to the football discussion about draft spot--upon further review it may not have come off that way.

My preference would be to add $10 to the overall budget and let us draft 29 players, making sure we leave the room with 23 of them composing a legal lineup. For the AL auction, only players affiliated at that time with an AL team (same for the NL) would be eligible.

We have 25 people confirmed for the LV auctions already, but obviously do not have 25 voices heard on this subject. Maybe an e-mail should be sent to those participants, explaining the discussion and asking if they care, to chime in on the board would be helpful.

This time you come across loud and clear, Todd. I don't disagree with the $270 and 29, although we both would admit that will be a 6+ hour auction. Not a bad thing, but it will be long.

I will e-mail all of the participants and finalize this. No sense letting this drag on too long.

Not necessarily. There is an art to auctioneering as well as participating. Give me 15 minutes with the auctioneers and I can get them to do the AL one in 5 hours and the NL one in 5 1/2. It would take some cooperation from the owners, not always waiting until "going twice" to make their bid and being ready with their tabled player, but there are definitely tricks to controlling the pace and forcing the bids that I could easily pass on. In addition, while I realize the people providing the roster boards are friends of the NFBC, they get their due at the main event. To speed things up at the auction, doing something like we do at the XFL and Tout Wars, having a projected spreadsheet track the draft and money situation significantly reduces the time it takes for money checks. I could provide the spreadsheet for each auction if you could arrange for it to be projected and for someone to man (or wo-man) the keyboard.

[/QUOTE]not sure if you meant "rib" as good or bad? if people draft in a serpentine fashion for reserve rounds, using your FA$ to decide which owners pick where, makes perfect sense. thanks.

Todd's comments concerning "Projected SpreadSheets" is something I've been waiting to see incorparated into Fantasy Sports since I started playing. It always seemed a natural progression to me and I thought the NFBC might be doing that in my speculations(prior to last years session) as to how it would be run. I was particularly impressed with the "Boards",and the color coded players names by position.

The time saved by not having money checks would be significant--25-30 minutes I would guess-- and immediate feedback on $$$ remaining would make owner decsions/stategies easier and relieve the strain of owners tracking it between checks.

I would still like to see some $$$ based penalty for not nominating a player within a minute of being cued by the Auctionner. But I'm all for a 29 player Auction though an $8 addition to the budget would seen better to me.

I'll mention this thread to my Co-Owner as we don't always agree on such things but this how I feel.

Spreadsheets are presently in the Future for Fantasy Sports. Why not make the NFBC the "Cutting Edge"?

not sure if you meant "rib" as good or bad? Neither good nor bad, just a failed attempt at getting a chuckle from those following both boards. You're welcome.

By means of example, here are some photos from the 2002 Tout Wars draft where you can see the projected spreadsheet. The rosters as well as budget are tracked and available for everyone to see.

I agree Todd that that is the preferred method. As you know we do that for the XFL and we've done that for LABR. If I could manage and afford to get projectors, screens and laptops for every draft, I'd do it. I'll look into costs and see what comes of it as the boards and workers already add costs to everything. But I have a feeling we'll fall short of the old-fashioned method of boards and stickers.

It would only be nessesary to equip the Auction Leagues with projection capability and they could be used annually and for Football Auctions as well. It would be a quantum leap for consumer fantasy gamers. The $$$ would be an investment and total write off. Or how about renting the hardware for Auction Day. You might need 3-5 or so projectors at each site. They could be used in the AM for National and PM for American. Own, rent or lease?? How about a sponsor like Sony or Hewlett Packard? Get that Tom K. on it.

Plus you save $$$ on Boards. They'll never be needed again for the Auctions

I love the projector spreadsheet idea, provided we have a big enough screen. The screen used in Todd's pictures look a bit small for these tired old eyes  .

Those projectors are standard fare in Corporate America. Perhaps some of the participants could borrow one from their A/V departments for a day. I used to have one in the office, but I'm retired now...now that they said "get your butt outta here".

JP, I'd be happy to create a Mixed Auction League for New York. I'm not sure we'll have enough interest, but we'll see as 3-4 guys have already said they would compete. Mixed Auction Leagues are certainly easier to run as the player pool is deeper. If everyone agreed, you could create a $270 budget and allow everyone to fill all 29 spots with that budget (basically adding $10 for your six reserve players).

But this whole fantasy baseball craze was started in 1980 by Daniel Okrent, who devised the Rotisserie Baseball rules to force owners to have stars and scrubs, just like the real MLB teams. Thus Rotisserie Baseball was created with AL-only and NL-only leagues in mind. For the extremely serious baseball player, this is the toughest test of your skills because all of those $1 players are the guys who could win the title for you. And yes, the free agent pool is thin, but when a good player surfaces you better get him. I like everything about the Auction League setup for attaining your 23 players, but I just feel the reserve players (who are very important) could be obtained in a similar fashion as the auction.

JP, let's get you in the NFBC main draft as I know you are good at that format. Then enter the Mixed Auction League and let Gordon sit next to you and give you pointers on that format! :D I'm sure that alone would be worth the price of admission!

I'm still open to logical suggestions for the reserve rounds from those guys who are competing in the AL and NL-only auction leagues. We'll nail this down soon and if we can't agree together, we'll stick with the current format of six serpentine rounds at the event and improve on that in 2006. Thanks everyone. I've pretty much locked a spot in the playoffs of the Gekko Satellite (9-1). I'm an underdog for top spot as other teams have better total points. If I am lucky enough to emerge as the winner, that will give me a nice paid entry. In any case, I'll be playing in NFBC baseball.

By the way, with 29 man rosters starting 23 and a six month season, I think draft slot in baseball is a very, very small factor. Football, with a small roster and only a 13 game regular season, is effected much more by where you draft.

Why not keep the 23-man auction pure at $260. After which, begin a 6-round secondary auction with new money only. Ten bucks is too small, since one $5 bid and its back to $1 per bid. Maybe allow for an avg of $3-4 per pick or $18-24 overall with no carryover?

Hey guys, time to get back to the message boards (well almost - this IS crucial week 11 in WCOFF).

I apologize if my comment about Greg's proposal to change the reserve selections is a rehash, BUT I am strongly opposed to a change in the way we did them last year (and the way it is done in most leagues). There are several good reasons to just draft our reserves

1) some teams may want to buy an injured player and need a healthy replacement for week 1

2) we should not compromise the integrity of the FAAB bidding

3) everyone has their draft lists right there and can easily pick their extra players, (because)

4) the week following the NFBC drafts, many of us have home league drafts or other obligations that require our time that week

I don't think it is being changed for the mixed league drafts and don't think it should be changed for the auction leagues.

See you in Vegas or back on the message boards in the spring.

Good question. I want to get some more feedback from the participants rather than just feedback on the Message Boards, so my plan was to send out a direct e-mail to everyone who has signed up through December and nail this down. If everyone is split on this issue, we'll keep it like last year. If there's a strong consensus one way or another, we'll finalize that together. I don't want to change the rules after we've signed everyone up, but I do want to hear from the players and do the right thing.

We have two full Auction Leagues in Las Vegas already. Let me get that e-mail out to those owners ASAP and get this nailed down.

The rules from last year were fine. Yes it took long but except for the Ugueth Urbina problem it went smooth. The way Ugueth Urbina was handled was the big problem. In N.Y. he was allowed to be bidded on. In Las Vegas he wasn't. Greg made a ruling in Las Vegas and I don't know who made the ruling in N.Y. With a rule change of being able to bid on anyone this problem won't come up again. So that should be a mute point. Just my two cents. Did I just agree with Todd Z???

That was totally my fault in Las Vegas last year and it won't happen again. An unsigned free agent CAN be bid on in both leagues during the auction portion of the event this year, but his stats only count for the league that he eventually plays in to start the season. If he switches leagues during the season, then he would become available in that league as well.

Oh, and welcome back John!
