NFBC Slow Draft Results: First Six Rounds
Glenn -
Last year, I took Santana at 1.8 and Sabathia at 2.8. I was then lucky to get Mauer in the 4th round and a bunch of other veteran hitters who gave me good production. I was also extremely lucky to get Zobrist in round 31. This was in one of the 45 round leagues.
I finished tied for 1st.
My theory was and is that you can win with good pitching.

And to the guy who said Mauer will be a bust....what would lead you to believe that? His numbers last year were put up in 5/6 of a season when you consider that he missed the first month. His numbers will probably go down a little, but he should still be worth the # 5 pick, especially when you consider scarcity at the C position. And I quote "His numbers last year were put up in 5/6 of a season when you consider that he missed the first month." Too risky (injuries) and catchers generally do not bring power to the equation. To boot, Mauer TRIPLED his HR number in 2009 in a few fewer at bats than the previous year. Some of that power boost could be maturity for sure, but not triple. Would you still be happy in the first round with Mauer at say 10-15 HR for the year? Mauer will give you great BA and his other counting stats except steals are good. However, even as good as last year was, he did not crack 100 R or RBI. He should be, due to his BA, the first catcher taken of the Big Three M's (Mauer, Martinez, and McCann), but just not the first round.
So, why don't I think he is first round material:
1) Catchers are risky.
2) Position scarcity is moot for the first four rounds or so.
3) I do not think the power jump will be repeated in 2010 and his regression to the mean will eat up all his first round appeal.
4) I am just not sure how many AB he will get and that impacts is counting stats. Mauer will get anywhere between 400 and 525 AB. That makes him too risky.
In his prime, I would have taken Piazza in the first round, but no other catcher is worth it. I could be all wet and I realize I am swimming against conventional wisdom. But that is just me. I felt the same way last year about Hamilton.
You take Mauer with my sincere wishes for good luck. Leaves more choices for me in the first round.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

i don't agree with this. in this case it all depends on which catcher you can get in the later round.

i don't agree with this. in this case it all depends on which catcher you can get in the later round.
Actually, that is exactly my point. Who can you get in a later but still be premium players, say fifth round or after?
Last year there were three catchers taken (using the ADP) in the first four rounds...McCann, Soto, and Martin. Two were flops (risks of the position, maybe?), especially based on their draft position. V-Mart went in the fifth and Mauer the end of the seventh. There were five second basemen taken in the first four rounds, but guys like Cano, Hill, even Uggla, Hudson, and Lopez were taken in some cases many, many rounds later.
Forget positon scarcity early (ok, sure guys like H-Ram and Utley give you production AND scarcity, but they are truly the exception to the rule). Get the most production you can out of those first, core picks. I think one of the most accurate truisms we have written on these boards in the past is you cannot win this thing with your early picks, but you can darn sure lose it.

exactly why i won't take a catcher or pitcher in the first few rounds.
get your core offense first, with the least injury risk.

so how can you say "positional scarcity is MOOT for the first four rounds or so"? you are obviously considering positional scarcity to make your point!!!
Yes, I am, but more precisely I am using positional scarcity as a counter-point for the early rounds. Surely you have to consider position because you cannot leave the draft without a certain number of pitchers, catchers, outfielders, MI, CM, etc. But in the earlier rounds, I just it is more important to lock down your core production. Don't take a player at a thin position and leave 10-15 HR, 10-20 RBI, 10-20 Runs or whatever on the table.
If you can get the production AND satisfy your needs (I like for my early round picks to exceed in at least four categories), then fine. I myself have picked Tejada (2004) and Utley (2008) who were fine. But I chose them first because they would (I thought) produce.
Mauer, other than BA, I do not think can be counted on to replicate his 2009, especially in power.

NFBC Slow Draft Results: First Six Rounds
Interesting draft strategy from the owner who took CC at #10. He took 2 pitchers and then took 4 older hitters (Lee, Ramirez, Ibanez, Lee).
I don't think it will work but it's nice to see someone thinking outside the box!

Possibly.
It's tough taking a Judy at a corner. The power will have to be made up somewhere.
Who knows though, a Judy may have been taken at a corner in the first or second round...
