Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
All good Mike - as you said lots of different approaches can still put together a good team.
Funny about your take on Royals vs Athletics .... I knew my second offense would come from KC, OAK, TB or MIN and while the Royals were the best last year and might be again, I thought that 1) someone would likely take them before my turn and that 2) they didn't fit as well because with Marlins I needed to improve at SS and 2b/or3b and at C. Yes I still needed two more OF but that would almost happen regardless (or 1B would move Morse to OF). Even MIN the worst of the teams would give me Danny Santana to replace Hecchavaria and Dozier for MI, BUT both OAK and TB would give me TWO catchers so I didn't have to play Salty every day and the Rays would give me Longoria (moving Prado to MI) and Souuza, Jennings and Kerimaier so they were actually the best "fit"
Picking 8th I didn't have a specifc target - would loved to have started with a good hitting team - especially Blue Jays but that was pretty unlikely, and I was actually pretty happy to start with SEA and King Felix, Iwakuma, Rodney and lots of upside from the younger pitchers. That meant I would still have a good hitting team at 2.08 and I really wanted MIA or HOU. Hell once I got to take the Marlins I was hoping the Astros would fall for another round to pair them up but again this league had good players (even if some of the individual selections were head scratchers). But with HOU and TEX gone I really needed to get my NL pitchers and not be subject to scraping the bottom of the barrel with AZ or COL.
The two teams I focused on were MIA and PIT. Loved Pirates to get Cole, good secondary SP, and Melancon but the upside of Jose Fernandez for the second half nudged me in that direction. Both teams rate to be better this year and win 80+ games this year giving the SP better W potential.
Then I just had to wait for my AL hitters.
Excellent concept again by KJ and I am sure it will be even more interesting next year.
Maybe if I have time this summer I can write the rules for a companion to the GridIron League and we can have a BallPark League next year - first two rounds are an auction with real dollars for the draft slots. The third round starts the draft with the positions established by the bidding from the first round. We would also play with $1000 real money FAAB. So you have the NFBC base fee - 2 or 3 K added to the bidding monies and the FAAB monies to create a very nice single league prize pool and we would add something extra to compensate for the loss of playoffs - maybe paying all ten category winners.
Meanwhile in addition to all our individual players in other leagues to root for at least all of us in this league have four TEAMS to root for all summer . Should be a BLAST.
The one thing I would hope we can do is keep a league thread going with input from all the players throughout the season.

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
In retrospect, I am happy with the overall construction of team. Any who has competed against me or knows of me is aware of my pitching strong philosophy. That said, I originally wanted a middle pick but after going back and forth I decided to go straight KDS. The Nationals were a given but it got tricky @ pick 2.30 where I was fixated on Astros Hitting only to get sniped but the decision of the Yankees over the Reds hitting was twofold, one I was gambling that one of San Diego, San Francisco and Mets would be there @ 3.45. Also factored into my decision was the Yankees improving there team versus Reds possibly blowing it after they host the All-Star Game. My biggest surprise on the pitching side was TB Rays lasting until pick 2.21, I consider that rotation + bullpen one of the best in MLB and on hitting side was the previously mentioned Astros with Altuve, Springer and there all or nothing lineup.
It will be very interesting to see how this new concept league plays out over the course of the season. I found the first 4 rounds to be a very exciting exercise, especially the middle rounds. Lastly, I foresee this league becoming a yearly staple in my multitude of leagues.
Tomorrow is the 1st day of March and another day closer to Vegas!

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
Perry and Matt - You guys have good teams. Will be fun to play this out. Funny, I thought the Astros bats were an under-the-radar selection that I was thinking about for Round 3. Looks like both of you - and others - were all over them too. Perry, just noticed that while the rest of us will be rooting for our half-teams, you're the only one that drafted a whole team (Marlins bats and arms), so we'll know who you'll be rooting for this season.
I think the only thing I might suggest in terms of possibly tinkering with this league would be for us to get together by phone or on-line at the same time and maybe auction off the 60 half-teams. Someone suggested that earlier in this thread (forgot who, don't feel like looking for it). That being said, I would do this again as is.

It will be interesting to compare draft position to final standings. Sure seemed pretty balanced during draft.
Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
After seeing how this went, I think an auction would be interesting to try too. Could be fun to do over 4 nights, one component at a time.
Or we could do a live auction in Vegas! Live we could probably knock out in an hour or so.

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
Just a heads up that this draft on Monday will start at 1 pm ET. I know it says 10 am ET, but we want to get you guys in the new draft room, so it starts at 1 pm ET. I have a feeling this won't take long to fill your rosters, so enjoy and give us some feedback on the software.
The Mia DC League will also start at 1 pm ET in the new online draft room. That's another league that will likely bang out several rounds on the first day, so it should be fun to watch these two. Good luck all and thanks for this unique concept. Should be another staple of the NFBC for years to come. Good job KJ on the idea.

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
Great concept. I'll be interested to see how this all plays out. The strategies employed by the various teams are fascinating. I really like Mike's CLE/SF pitching staff. Rick's BOS/STL offense will be downright scary.

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
It will be intersting after we add the players this week to see how the projected lineups actually look - not all hitting squads mesh together as well as others
I will hate to look at Matt's starting pitchers - good think it's not H2H

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
I think it would be very interesting if all of us predicted the order of finish - let's wait until after we add our thirty players so we can see all the teams and then post our projected order of finish here with comments (I don't think anyone in this group is thin skinned and besides this is the inagural run so we likely all made a mistake ... or two)
Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
Based on average prices from the DC auctions I've done this year (flawed but objective), here is the doughvalue™
of each team relative to a $260 auction budget:
1 Jason DuPonte • $312 (215/97)
2 Ted Cohan • $302 (200/102)
3t George Kleemann • $282 (211/71)
3t Rick Hayden • $282 (207/75)
5t Jay Lyons • $273 (141/132)
5t Thomas Warner • $273 (139/134)
7 Perry/Zola • $269 (155/114)
8 Mike Mager • $263 (146/117)
9 Eric Albright • $261 (184/77)
10 Matt Modica • $256 (113/143)
11 KJ Duke • $252 (187/65)
12 Scott Butter • $247 (144/103)
13 Ken Gill • $229 (186/43)
14 Roy Ericson • $218 (178/40)
15 Russel Wyatt • $215 (140/75)
doughvalue™ ▬ The presumed worth of a baseball player based upon ADP, consensus projections or sentiment. In a draft, for example, when someone says "Nice value pick, Dan", they are referring to a player's doughvalue rather than his actual future contribution to your fantasy team and thus it should be acknowledged with some skepticism. The term came about as an indictment of the concept of value. Not to be confused with intrinsic value.

BUT my first questionable item would be Matt's team - you can buy ALL the WAS starters plus Storen, plus his other closer, plus his other SP or RP for $113????? Somehow I doubt that

Modica hitting was $113, $143 pitching.Captain Hook wrote:BUT my first questionable item would be Matt's team - you can buy ALL the WAS starters plus Storen, plus his other closer, plus his other SP or RP for $113????? Somehow I doubt that
Fixed now, several teams were listed backwards.

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
That is VERY interesting given it's tie with KDS selections
Sorry that it will be over a month before I can personally do any detailed analysis on it - but hey we have all summer to discuss this great league
BTW - there will be an article on this league early this week at Mastersball - I will put a link here when published.
It doesn't mention any names other than KJ but I think it will gain some viewers and possible players for next year

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
FWIW in multiple DC Auctions I've participated in, I have done dual Aces with Scherzer & Strasburg paying between $62-$67 for their combined services.
I think this will be a fascinating league that should be very competitive & it will be interesting to see the effect of MLB trades on our team rosters throughout the season and especially at the trade deadline.
I kinda preferred the draft vs an auction in this format and not because I got the Nationals pitching but because the slotting format 1-15, 15-1, 15-1 & 15-1 evened it out.

I thought about this during the draft. I'm not sure that the front end of the draft out-weighed the back end by soo much that 1-15, 15-1,15-1,15-1 was correct.
I wonder how 1-15, 15-1,15-1,1-15 would have played out?? Of course I was picking third while I was thinking this

Then again, the draft didn't go off like I thought it would. I thought that if I didn't take SD at three that by the time the draft came back around to me at pick 28, the only NL pitchers remaining would be ARZ, COL, and maybe PHIL... I wasn't even close with that assumption.

Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
I think the draft order was absolutelyl correct
Re: $250 TEAM Satellite Draft
Best way to settle that question would be to auction off the slots.

If you did that already in Flash the computer will still obviously take your picks from there. Anyone who wants to draft from Flash can certainly do that for this league, but we'll have a link soon for the new online draft room so that you and KJ's Team Satellite League guys can test out the new online draft room.Navel Lint wrote:I might not be there exactly at 12, but I have loaded up my que and went on auto, so hopefully it transfers.ctmbaseball wrote:I'm all queued up, that was easy. We are close to getting this live. If it's not exactly at 1 pm ET, just hold off on the first pick if you'd like and it should be shortly after that. But we'll post in the draft room the directions for the new link as soon as this is live. Should be soon.
