Baseball: A strange game. Blanton looks horrible all year and then tonight looks like Cy Young, against a good hitting team. The Phillies need some of their starters to get hot, maybe this is the start of good things.

Plus Hanley left the game early tonight.

I finally sat him and used Romero instead. :mad: So this is actually one more reason for me to hate him. I will say that in the three innings I watched, nearly every flyball landed on the warning track.

Also, he is fat and stupid and likes country music.

I don't get how you'd start him over Blanton THIS week if you bother to have Joe on your roster to begin with.

I copied this from Shandler's site this morning......not exactly a ringing endorsement....

I don't necessarily buy into everything Shandler writes....but for those who believe in peripherals, he is pretty much acknowledged the guru of those kind of stats....

"Blanton finally delivers, Ks 11...Joe Blanton (RHP, PHI) delivered his first PQS-5 start of the year on Tuesday with seven shutout innings vs. Florida and 11 strikeouts.

The outing was a welcome relief for Blanton owners - if there are any left. Through the first quarter of the season, he was 2-3 with a 7.71 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. Blanton has had some rough patches in the past, including last summer. Here's a look at his monthly BPIs going back to last June:

2008 IP ERA xERA H% S% G/L/F Ctl Dom Cmd

==== === ==== ==== == == ======== === === ===

June 28 7.16 5.13 30 55 56/18/26 3.9 4.6 1.2

July 8 7.99 7.44 30 62 35/19/45 4.5 2.3 0.5

August 36 3.03 4.79 27 81 40/17/43 4.0 7.3 1.8

Sept. 27 4.67 4.79 27 69 43/25/32 3.7 6.0 1.6

2009

====

April 20 8.41 4.64 42 62 33/29/39 3.1 8.9 2.9

May 24 6.00 4.72 29 58 46/22/33 3.8 6.4 1.7

The past year has been a roller coaster ride for Blanton, led by huge monthly variances in s%, Dom and ERA. Still, since he joined Philadelphia at the trade deadline last summer, his xERA has remained within a fairly narrow range of 4.64 to 4.79. This is who Blanton is - a back of the rotation starter with pretty good control, but one who will average less than 6 Ks a game over the course of a season. He'll pitch a few gems like he did vs. the Marlins on Tuesday. But he'll also take some beatings, especially at home where he's already allowed 7 HRs in 22 IP."

shandler's write-up is wrong on the K/9, which has a domino effect on all his other stats.

"one who will average less than 6 Ks a game over the course of a season"

7K+ per 9

[/QUOTE]shandler's site is behind the curve on a number of players. i can guarentee you the guy who wrote that hasn't followed blanton as closely as me.

Blanton has 139 innings in Philly. He has 115 strikeouts. That is a K/9 of 7.4 (NOWHERE CLOSE TO BELOW 6!!!).

If you want to take away the stats after his midseason trade which may have played on his mind, Blanton has pitched 68 innings in Philly (counting the stressful 2008 postseason) with 66 K's. That's a K/9 of 8.7.

Personally, I think his rate this year will be low to mid 7's.

isn't there a difference between ks/9 and ks per start? greinke not only has a nice k rate- he pitches 8-9 innings per start. vs joba- who is now the 1st " starting reliever" in history. he is now pitching about 4 innings per start. he and grienke may have the same k rate at some point- but zack will have about twice the k's per start. not to be out done- tampa is gonna trot out david price to do the same as joba. meanwhile boston has 7 starters and about 6 good relief pitchers.
