Any thoughts on having the whole format be the Slow Draft Format, with Keepers. We could do a 45 or 50 round slow draft that includes both major league and minor league players. Next year the draft will start again with everybody having their Keepers set... I love the long drafts and strategy that goes along with trying to think of everything while building a deep team through the slow draft including minor leaguers etc....

i am ok with a slow draft but dont really want to replicate something like draft champion leagues and have it be that many rounds.
The standard is 30 and then we keep minors too so I would say no more than 40 rounds depends on how many minors spots we have. If its only 5 minor spots its 35 rounds initially right?
We definitely want to keep the $1000 FAAB right?

The format will need to be decided after we figure out where this league will be. Farming it out to CBS or something like that is an option. Fanball obviously take more money out of the league as opposed to the standard $150 charge CBS offers. Where does KJ have his other keeper league at? Here?
I like the slow draft concept for this league. The number of rounds doesn't matter much to me; whatever the masses decide is good enough for me.
How many keepers can we can over? What is the standard for that?
Thanks,
Matt

his rules said 8 mlb guys and 5 keepers.
yeah i am a fan of cbs and know the commish tool like the back of my hand..but its weighing and the full payout - $150 vs having it here....keeping an higher confidence level in lack of turnover etc.
Once Greg provides some feedback..we should be able to move forward.

Ok, that sounds good to me. So it would be a 35 Player SLOW DRAFT for the draft. We would still have 23 Regulars, 7 Reserves, and 5 Minor Leaguers with $1000 FAAB (Free Agent Bidding Process).
With the 3 Year Keeper Process, does that include the year we draft them? Like if I drafted David Wright this year (2011) would I be able to keep him in 2012, 2013, and 2014 or just 2012 and 2013.
Also with the Minor Leaguers how does that work? If I have say Dominic Brown this year as a Minor Leaguer and he become a regular, how long will be able to keep him?

Also with the Minor Leaguers how does that work? If I have say Dominic Brown this year as a Minor Leaguer and he become a regular, how long will be able to keep him? based on KJ's rules (which I have found to work great) draft in 2011, keep for 2012 and 2013 (not 2014). The contract clock starts on Minor leaguers when YOU choose to activate them, not when they actually come to the majors. Separate draft for 5 Minor league spots. You can draft a minor leaguer for your major roster, but then has a normal 3 year contract. Remaining minor leaguers can be taken in the separate minor draft (5 minor slots) and kept indefinitely until you active them.
I would prefer a regular draft instead of slow draft, but would do either. Trouble with slow draft during preseason is that a player's status can change during the draft (changes to 40 man roster) -- I think eligibility should be locked at the beginning of the draft.
Finally, a great feature is using FAAB to bid for draft position -- in fact I think that should be used for all high stakes NFBC leagues.

OK, quick update on the signup or "interest" list.
Unfortunately Tommy won't be able to join us, maybe next year if this gets off the ground.
We're still at 9 or 10 that have already expressed interest. I've updated the list above.
Good discussion so far, some interesting ideas & viewpoints all around.
Well, I'm off to meet up with my brothers to take my kids, nieces, & nephews trick or treating.
Happy Halloween everyone, don't scare too many people.

My thoughts on why I think a Slow Draft would be good for this keeper league are 2 fold.
1. It would really build Comradery and let everybody get to know each other. Building friendships and a little competitiveness inside of that helps leagues stick together for the long term! Rick (Round Trippers) and I did a Slow Draft together last year and it was a blast!
2. With the 75+ Minor Leaguers chosen for this keeper league, 60 or 90 seconds might not be enough time to make a good choice!
Just my thoughts....Max

Just my thoughts....Max to clarify, in KJ's league this year there was a 30 round live draft followed by a slow draft for the 5 minor league spots

As long as its 90 Seconds and the software allows for a draft bank of players to be pulled from!!!
Another question regarding keepers. Will Free Agent pick ups be allowed to be kept?

This is the excerpt from the rules posted on KJ's league blog page
http://nfbck.blogspot.com/
c) Any keeper that was drafted will take the place of that team's draft pick for the same round in which he was drafted. Any keeper that was a free agent pickup will take the place of that team's 11th round draft pick, or highest available pick after the 11th round. (Example: If a team kept his 11th and 13th round picks and two free agents, the free agents would take the place of his 12th and 14th round picks. The players' contracts, however, would not change to the lower round, even if they were kept for a lower round pick).

Greg,
Do you think fanball can support a keeper league format this year or should we pursue alternate options?

Well, we have three worthy candidates for commish including KJ who we both know can handle the role.
As far as turnover, those who have shown interest so far are made up of a combination of long time NFBC vets including some real heavyweights, several players with experience in both participating & running Keeper Leagues....and me. Outside of the me part, seems like a pretty good start to a league that can sustain.
That leaves the programming....
Greg, please let us know if you feel you can make this happen as soon as possible. I'm already finalizing plans for this coming year and I'd like to know as soon as possible if I'm going to be adding this to my agenda. Thanks.
The following is a list of those who've shown interest in this league. I'm sorry I don't know everyone's name. If all I listed is your message board name, please provide your full name to make it easier for Greg and/or Tom to follow up if this league becomes a reality. i am not glenn...but i am trying to help him get this thing together...so i will respondlast i heard..we were still bantering around where the league would be hosted..and slow draft vs faster draft....etc for year 1.
being that we are gonna be in a baseball lull for a few months..i would love to do the initial draft early....relatively soon...slow or fast..whatever....but i think we still gotta fill 15 spots too.

Lets continue pushing this and get the 15 guys committed to making it a great league. I think once we have 15 guys who all want to be part of this league, the rest will fall into place pretty quick.

i think we agree on KJ's rules..thats not a problem...our initial next steps should be fill the league..and figure out who will host it?(here, CBS, yahoo, espn etc)
We can tackle a draft date later.....but lets say early 2011 at the earliest..fair enough?

I agree that it shouldn't be any earlier than January some time. I think once we get the 15 guys needed it would be fun to pick draft position though, allowing us all time to plan for that position going forward! Just an idea....
If we put it to a vote I would chose the Slow Draft format for all the reasons I said before, but would do it either way.
Anybody hear from Greg yet on this?
