This last draft saw 7 of the first 30 picks being Starting Pitchers and 17 of the first 46 picks were SPs. It's a trend we're going to see more of in 2016 as aces are needed to anchor your teams this year more than ever before.

So, who will take the gamble in the Main and wait on starting pitching? Zig while the others zag...
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I dunno, but the people who do wait and then hit this season's version of the Arrieta/DeGrom/Keuchel trifecta (2015 ADP's 101.14, 106.91, 230.45, respectively) are probably going to do quite well for themselves.

You have a minor typo in hot corner section. I think you meant to say four, since you list four different players (Donaldson, Bryant, Arenado, Machado).

Good read, thanks for sharing.

Some of the variability in terms of where certain players are being drafted is very interesting. For instance, I see that in the three drafts listed today, Jose Bautista was taken at the end of the first round (15), near the end of the second round (29), and near the end of the third round (43). I often read these summaries and see examples of where I think some guys went too high and some guys went too low. I'm sure everyone does. Seeing Bautista last until 3.13, however, is one of the most surprising outcomes I can recall. The end of the third round? The guy hit 40 homers last year with 108 runs and 114 RBI. The year before he hit 35 homers with 101 runs and 103 RBI. I guess folks feel like they have to take a starting pitcher in Round 3 no matter what hitters may fall to them. (Of course, this post probably is the kiss of death for Jose - my apologies in advance to all Bautista owners.)

Bautista and Encarnacion have ghosts. There numbers are undebateable. They play on a team of bombers.
What's not to like?
The elephant in the room.
A percentage of drafters reckon that both are taking steroids and gotten away with it for years.
These drafters aren't about morals. Theyre thinking of the penalty faced if losing a player for a long period.
Especially a first or second round choice.

The players remain the same in each draft.
Two things change.
News effecting players and drafters.
In drafts where Bautista or Encarnacion fall in roundage, I believe the higher percentage of those thinking this may be the year their 'luck' runs out when testing.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

I don't know, Dan. Other than Bautista's breakout year, I don't recall hearing or seeing too much, if anything, about Bautista and/or Encarnacion doing PEDs. They've put up pretty impressive numbers in recent years when there has been lots of testing. You think these guys, and others, are getting around the tests and that folks are avoiding drafting them because they're afraid they will suddenly get caught for the first time this season? Maybe I'm just naive, but these are big guys, with big swings, that make hard contact in a friendly ballpark. The team's lineup, on paper, looks very formidable and that should help with counting stats. I don't see it, but I guess that helps make the drafts interesting. Reasonable minds can and do differ.

Mike, there is no talk. Rumors have swirled for a long time.
Sometimes rumors influence drafters as much as numbers.
Even if just 25% of drafters think differently and they are bunched in one draft, Bautista will fall.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

The answer why Bautista fell to 3.13 in that draft could be as simple as team construction. With the exception of JD Martinez, who has comparable power statistics but less of a track record, every OF taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds before Bautista had good to great speed potential. Particularly in the first 2-3 rounds, we all would like 10-15 players on our team and make a decision on who the best fit is, knowing the other 9-14 won't get back to us. One of the great parts of these early drafts is the debate of why certain players go where and how things can change from draft to draft.

Re: 2016 NFBC Early Draft Results

I'm more concerned about an injury to EE or Joey Bats than a failed drug test.

Also feel the Blue Jays as a team will fall back - they scored a near historical number of runs compared to the rest of the league. This impacts the run/RBI totals of all the Jays.

I'm not avoiding them -- they're in play at the turn.

They have the numbers. Past deposits in the bank.

1. Suspension
2. No speed
3. Roster Construction
4. Injury

In the debit column.

Gotta love fantasy baseball!!!!

All good points. Roster composition is a huge consideration. As Bautista ages, his injury risk increases (although he has been pretty healthy the last two seasons). I agree the odds are much more likely that the Jays score less and not more runs in 2016 than 2015, if only because 2015 was such an extraordinary year (although all big bats are back, and if they have Tulo, Travis and Revere for most of the season, the regression may not be significant). With few exceptions, the other teams in the division do not have a ton of great starting pitchers. I guess I just think Bautista may not get the credit he deserves. He is the only player in baseball who scored 100+ runs and had 100+ RBI in both 2014 and 2015 (and is one of only four players that had 35 or more HR in 2014 and 2015). Perhaps this is the year he shows his age, or gets hurt, or suspended. No guarantees in this game. I was just surprised that he fell to the late third round, which is later than where I thinks he belongs.

Bautista and Edwin and 1-2 in homers the last five years, 173 and 168, respectively.

Took both at 2.13 and 3.3 in an early DC and was happy to do so. Injury can hit anyone but they are as stable as power bats come in those draft spots IMO.

Beauty before age puts Mookie Betts in the first round ahead of Miguel Cabrera.
Again, Cabrera has past numbers on his side, but is faltering back and forth between the first and second rounds.
Some drafters were kdsing 15th to nab Mookie. It was a matter of time until the 13th and 14th drafters foiled their plans...
