If you need to differentiate, make the entry for the LIVE 12 team event $500. My point is that if you make the entry MORE affordable then you WILL get more teams and like the FBG contest end up not with a $35,000 grand prize but much closer to a $100,000 first place award.
I know tons of avid fantasy baseball players who would think the $500 entry is within their means but who tune out when you got to four digits.
Again the key is you can offter a reasonable entry with a Big $ prize AND increase it incrementally as the size of the field grows. Our Live Double Play the last two years was $500. That's a tough price point for live events because of all the expenses involved and a live $350 event would definitely be a money loser. We're trying to have two national 12-team contests and I think we can do that even with a four-figure price point for the live event.
You, as much as anyone, should know that the 12-team live event format is likely more commonplace than a 15-teamer. So we'll see if we can grow this market, while still growing our Main Event with the $100,000 grand prize.

More Details On 12-Team Main Event
Here are my 3 concerns about the new contest:
1. If people are able to play the 12 team main event online, they will be less likely to spend the money to travel and attend a live event. As a 12 team online event already exists (the $350 game), why not limit the 12 team main event to live locations?
2. I think there is a big risk in the new 12 team event cannibalizing the 15 team event. Not sure many new people will play both and some current,1 event, 15 team entrants will opt for the 12 team.
3. On a personal level, I'll be watching the league entry fees and prize offerings closely in deciding whether to play. Specifically, I'm looking for decent payouts to at least 3 places. As a person who would enter the event only once, I'm at a big disadvantage in the overall compared to folks who are able and willing to play the 12 team game with 3 to 5 entries.

I feel like I'm the Jerry Quarry of the NFBC.

On naming the event, I think that most people who play fantasy baseball (in private leagues) tend to play in 12 team leagues. Even Yahoo's leagues are 12 teams. When you read articles, you often hear 12 team leagues referred to as a "12 team standard" league.
How about "The Standard" as the name of the competition or to incorporate Roman Numerals, "The Standard 12"?

How about the NFBC All-Star Championship since its a shallower league?

I have a tendency to agree with you, Cowboy. My biggest concern when I heard about this event is that it would "dilute the bread and butter brand" of the NFBC which is the live $1400 Main Event . Given the economic climate that we are in, I fear that this may happen. Hopefully it doesn't
