Off topic but....

1. Why does CBS continue to schedule 60 Minutes for 7 PM ET during football season?

2. Who, after all these years, tunes in at 7 PM ET "expecting" to see 60 Minutes?

I know Todd I have always thought that. You constantly see that 60 minutes will air when the game is over, is the game ever over by 7 pm. No, of course not. You would have to figure after all these years that they would have changed that.

REMINDER

I will be leaving on a jet plane at 7 AM ET, landing in Phoenix in time for the 12:35 PT AFL game. I may be able to check in during my stopover, but I will not be back on line until late afternoon which will be early evening to the east coasters.

I don't have one of those "smart" phones, but it is just intelligent enough to accept text messages and I am just barely smart enough to be able to read them, so if someone wants to text me the picks, please feel free. I will have a list with me so I can call or text someone with my pick(s) -- any volunteers? I figure worst case is I call/text Shawn.

As for the tracker, if there is a mistake, please call or text me. I cannot promise I will be able to respond right away, but on the other hand, if you catch me at the right time later in the week, you may be able to talk with the country's most famous pig farmer.

We will no doubt get to at least one blind round, I have no problem sending Dan 8 names so I will be covered.

MY CELL 508-816-5424

Carry on....

Once again struggled with this pick as there were many different directions I wanted to go. I decided it was time to get my first corner infielder and this one should help me with my struggling BA, won't hurt me in runs, RBI's, or HR's, and throw in a few steals as well. The position 1B, the player.....

Norm Cash 1961

BA - .361

R - 119

HR - 41

RBI - 132

SB - 11

Very nice pick Glenn.. Another player who I've been considering for quite awhile just couldn't seem to pull the trigger

Guys just curious as I have never done a slow draft before until this. I think we are moving at a decent pace but compared to a regular slow draft are we?

Glenn I had to go back and forth between him and Dean Chance who was my last pick I also liked Bill Terry at that point who went shortly after. Nice pick, I think he was the best first basemen left. You made my next pick a bit easier as I am not sure if I could have passed on N Cash again.

I thought that this position would be loaded when we started and I honestly was a bit surprised that it just did not have the great years I thought it did. Therefore I am filling a position that I feel needs to be filled sooner then later and going with:

Vinny Castilla 1998

.319 average / 46 HR / 108 R / 144 RBI / 5 Steals

Another guy who clearly took advantage of before humidor Coors Field and even possibly steroids, I mean who am I kidding he did take advantage of steroids. Either way it is really one loaded year for a third basemen.

Thanks guys. I struggled with taking him here or trying to see if he made it around the turn since 4 of the 5 teams drafting before I pick again already had a 1B and there were other players I like a lot. Still everytime I looked at the 1B pool, I couldn't find a player that fit what I'm trying to do even close to Cash. I decided I had to pull the trigger now and worry about the next pick when the time came.

Now that you tell me that you were considering him Ryan, it makes me even happier that I did pull that trigger.

It's clear that I'm now drafting based on my favorite baseball cards growing up...

Ken Griffey Jr. (1997): .304, 56HR, 147RBI, 125R, 15SB

You just reminded me that I still do have that card. Just went and looked for it and found it. I wonder what the value is currently on it. Nice pick. One of my favorite players as a kid to watch.

NOTE TO SELF -

Dear Self:

If you do this again, either devalue batting average for your whole list or take a couple higher average guys early, then switch to a list that really devalues average.

Love,

Self

Speaking of baseball cards, I went to one of the first baseball card conventions in Chicago as a kid in the mid-1970's. I had saved up and had exactly $40 to spend. My goal was to get Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and go from there. I had a choice between a crisp, high grade 1934 Ruth that was $40 (probably $8000-$10,000 today) and would wipe me out or the crappy condition $7 card from 1933 with a nice swinging pose that I finally decided to purchase. (Worth about $500 today, so it was still a fine investment. Yes, I kept it!) The Gehrig was $10 and is a little nicer. The other $23 netted me a big stack of cards from a nice 1934 Jimmie Foxx to a 1956 Willie Mays. I'd love to go back in time now that I know something about grading and take another $40 crack at that show!

The speed of slow drafts has been an "issue" since the NFBC started them.

Lets face it, all of us have different circumstances.

Some have the ability to be online most of the day, if it be at home or work. And those people will always feel that the draft is moving too slow because they always have the ability to check the draft status and they get frustrated when there are no picks being made.

Meanwhile, others only have limited time to access the draft and they just do the best they can to keep it moving. Many times it is their pick when they get online and they make the pick right away........after all; it's a slow draft and if they make one pick per day, that's the point of a slow draft.

There is also the problem of time differences from the east to west coast.

However, as I said, we are doing ok...............but we could always do better ;) :D

Jumping on the low ERA/WHIP bandwagon. As if everyone didn't already know that.

Jack Pfiester (P) 1906

Problem is I already messed up my draft; as Carew was listed at 2nd Base on my spreadsheet. Clearly, there was no value of taking him as my CI; just felt the need to articulate that I am not that stupid.

Although I do have plenty of graded cards, I have generally just stuck to collecting sets (Topps)

I do have two groups of cards that I've worked on. I was trying to collect all the Cubs from the T-206 set. I've only picked up about 25% of them. And another "set" that I completed was all of the Topps card number 50. When Topps had their 50th anniversary I got the idea in my head to collect all of the #1 cards, until I realized the cost of putting together a nice set. so I switched to card 50. Card 50 was some good players, Mays, Berra, Jackie Robinson, Musial....others

Just writing about the cards makes me want to go to EBay now :D :D
