NFBC Message Boards

I did post this on the Fantasy/MLB Talk forum, but I know that many folks look at this area the most. We held an NFBC 15-team mock draft (23 rounds, must fill all starting spots) on Wednesday, Nov. 10th. Just a note: We used the NFBC 15-team format and scoring system for this draft, which was held by CreativeSports.com and will be featured in the Fantasy Baseball Guide 2006 publication. We drafted 23 rounds (had to fill out an official starting lineup) and there will be NO transactions during the season, so injury-riddled players fell a bit in this draft.

That is a team of last year's performers as I struggled to find young power after taking Soriano and Reyes early. My outfield stinks of old age, but hopefully my starters can hold together. It was a fun first draft and you learn quickly.

It seems my theme with most players is that they can't be that bad two years in a row, can they? I didn't know that this was a no transaction league but I probably would have made the same decisions. Lacking a little in speed, but I would be very comfortable with this team going into the 2006 season. Comments are welcome.

Gekko, Moneymaker had a great team, but no, I didn't remember that he had Rivera, I did remember your tirades over Foulke and Washburn and Thome.

Doughboys, Wow! You made some great picks. How in the world did you get Sheets and Prior that late? These are guys with 2nd round ability if everything breaks right. Most of your "gambles" have so much value, that it would be hard for this team not to contend IMO. Switching gears, I'm also wondering how far Kerry Wood sank and where Matt Cain and Felix Hernandez got taken.

F Hernandez was taken in the 7th round, Cain in the 19th, and Wood in the 20th. I was surprised that Cain didn't go higher, it seemed younger players were coveted more than the old.

Yeah, I think all of us are still working on our 2006 Cheat Sheets and were going off last year's results at each position. I lost track of Sheets or I would have taken him ahead of Harden and I definitely lost track of Cain. Wood is an interesting pick, but remember we don't make any moves in this league so he's definitely a gamble in this format.



Yeah, Dan, I liked Sheets and Prior that late, too. I doubt those two will go that late once all the Cheat Sheets get assembled.

Fielder in the 21st round may have been the best value pick in the draft. Except for being a Brewer, he has everything going for him.

Not quite everything. They have to get rid of Lyle Overbay first, or he won't have a position! Hopefully, they won't be like Tampa Bay who plan to keep Upton in the minors until he qualifies for social security.

Good point, but I honestly think the Brewers are downplaying this situation right now. Overbay is still a better defensive first baseman and his salary for 2006 is on the cheap yet, so they don't HAVE to trade him. But there is absolutely no reason to keep Fielder in the minors this year and splitting time at first makes no sense at all since both bat from the left side. They are exploring trades for Overbay and would like to trade him for a starting pitcher. It might not happen this off-season, but it definitely will happen at some point early in the season (at the latest). Fielder can handle first adequately defensively and he definitely has the talent to hit major-league pitching right now. The Brewers would be foolish not to give him 500+ at-bats this year and further his development with Weeks, Hardy and Hall learning together in the infield.



I might be wrong, but Fielder could have a big, big season in 2006.



Now as for Fielder in the NFBC, he played only 7 games at first and pinch-hit in 30 games. He spent enough time in the majors to not be considered on par with a September callup, so his only position of eligibility on Draft Day will be Utility. He will not qualify at first base to start the season and will need to play 10 games during the season to earn position eligibility at first. Bummer, but that will be his situation to start the year.

Greg, Interesting analysis. I agree guys like Fielder can really make or break your team, but prospects are so tricky to figure in terms of playing time which is the most important factor. I had Upton all year and he never got called up. I also had Grady Sizemore this year on my Ultimate team and that couldn't have worked out better. I drafted him in the 25th round, thinking he would have a decent shot to start and it wound up being one of the reasons I got second place. The gambles one takes should have lots of upside and not much downside. Fielder could possibly fit that bill. He figures to be a late round pick that could pack quite a punch. You gotta take some chances and hit some gambles if you expect to win an NFBC league IMO!

The Ortiz pick at #4 would make even less sense in the NFBC since he will not be eligible for 1b next year.

It looks like he has 10 games at 1b, that isn't enough? I cant remember, maybe NFBC was 20 games?

Yep, went back and looked after reading this - I totally agree- a 4th place pick for Utility is a bit much. But even if he was available for first, it is hard for me to like him this high. I just can't see not taking a 5 tool hitter in the top 7, or someone at a postion like 2B/SS or so...
