A Wing and a Prayer

This is the first year I haven't played in even one league of fantasy football. I haven't missed it.
Not a knock against fantasy football, I'm just overly jaded by baseball and fantasy baseball.
But, it is football season and I do have a couple of thoughts....

I've noticed that football this season has been similar to fantasy football. Let me explain.
The Packers are 13-0. Usually, this would be THE story. As it would, or should be, in fantasy leagues when a team goes undefeated.
But, it's not the story.
On Message Boards, posters lament about the lucky teams that don't score a lot of points, but there head to head records put them in first place.
They're so lucky.
The Message Boards are the press of fantasy football. The Boards posters do not want to talk of excellence as much as the luck of some teams.
It's human nature.
In real life, football is now the same.
The Packers keep rolling, but they're not the story.
Tebow time or the luck of the Broncos get the lions share of the airtime.

We like to say here in Colorado with our elevation, that we're closer to God than most.
Back that with Tim Tebow's faith and we have divine interception, uh, intervention.
I picked a great year not to play any form of fantasy football.
Watching the Broncos on Sunday has gone from watching a football game to watching a reality show.
Each week, a team goes ahead of the local heroes for as many as 50-55 minutes, only to have Tebow come in and do his wing and a prayer routine.
Great theater and the best reality show on television.

Like most lucky fantasy football teams, the Broncos will fade.
When it comes to prayers or the Packers, sorry religion, but I'll take the Packers every time.
But, it's a fun ride.
It's refreshing to see a hero after a game credit the Man upstairs and really mean it.
It's good for football.
The Packers are 13-0. So good, they're boring.
Maybe the first 13-0 team in the NFL without the press that usually follows the achievment.
At the end of the season, the Packers most likely will be be back-to-back Champs.
In a small way, they can thank Tebow and the Broncos.

Since I posted this under NFBC Discussion, I feel obligated to at least give mention of some baseball.

Chris Iannetta hit four homers and hit .172 away from Coors last year.
If he is your first catcher this year, have Tim Tebow shoot the Man upstairs a little prayer for you.

I don't know Dan - there are strange powers at work here when it comes to the Broncos. :D

And it can't be denied that Tebow is getting better with each passing week this season. I don't see another team in the AFC without questions at this point in the year. And while 13-0 is nice, the Jennings injury could be the first crack in the armor for the Pack. If I was going to make my prediction toady for the NFC Champ - I am taking the Saints.

A sidelight to watching the Tebow show is watching John Elway in the booth upstairs.
He has a hard time with the whole Tebow thing and it shows in almost every camera shot.
At the same time, Elway has learned to both clench his teeth and smile while doing it.
He smiles ever so broadly at the end of Tebow miracles, but is never jubilant. It's just not in him.

Tebow is not a conventional NFL quarterback.
Fundamentally, he does too many things 'wrong'.
Elway is cashing a winning lotto ticket, but Tebow has furnished him the numbers.
Numbers that Elway would never have dreamed of choosing.
And each week is a reminder for him.

It won't be easy for Elway, no matter how the Broncos fortunes turn.
If the Broncos continue winning, Tebow's legend grows and Elway doesn't have the luxury of building HIS team for the future.
If the Broncos fade, Tebow will still be the man who brought them from rags to riches and in pushing him out, Elway could be looked at as a villain in Colorado, the state he owns.
It isn't easy being John Elway.

what has he done? he's on a nice streak, but if he does fade and they miss the playoffs or get beat in 1st rd, what has he really done? sorry Dan, but people in Denver have to be the most fickle on Earth (and they say we Philly fans are bad  ) They had NO PROBLEM running the 2nd most successful QB in franchise history outta town...all he did was lead them to a 13-3 record and the AFC Championship game. He beat Tom Brady & Pats when they were invincible. The following yr they replace him when the team was 7-4, w/ rookie Cutler and they proceed to lose ALL of their remaining games. IMBECILES. Shanahan is a genius

I think the Broncos now are much more reliant on their defense and didn't the kicker make 2 50+ yd FG's yesterday? Shouldn't he get some credit? they certainly get all the blame (Norwood) when they miss.

As fas as Tebow & his faith.....

There is no second best quarterback in Bronco history, David.
There is Elway and all the rest. Its been years since Elway retired, but the number seven jersey is still the most prevalent in Colorado, well, maybe not now with the Tebow buzz, but you know what I mean. :)

Let me put it this way...
Let's say for the sake of argument that the Broncos do not make the playoffs.
Tebow still will have transformed them from a nowhere team to a playoff contender.
Elway cannot undo what has happened. If he were to use a high draft choice to bring in a quarterback from Wassamatta U, the pick would be panned on soooo many levels.
The Broncos are now Tebow's team. He has taken the power from Elway.
During the off season, the Broncos have to think what goes around Tebow, not how to replace him. Tebow has forced that.
The Broncos didn't expect it and Elway never in his wildest dreams thought this would happen.
But, it has.
And no matter the outcome of this season, the Broncos Management has the same feeling now as when Elway played.
It's not their team, it is their quarterbacks team.

so Tebow has surpassed "all the rest" in record time and w/ so little actual accomplishment....btw, if Denver D was as good then as it is now Plummer might not be lumped in w/ "all the rest".

I fail to see how winning some reg. season gm's has vaulted Tebow above Elway....the fans who would actually boycott the Broncos b/c 7 traded Tebow are the same who'd boycott a military funeral, good riddance. Unless that TE running the Wildcat wins it all, Elway can do whatever he wants. Why? You implied it yourself, Elway is GOD in Colorado. God does what he wants, or haven't you noticed

i may be a heathen, but i'd rather be me than agree w/ this guy -

On a Boston-radio station this morning they were talking about Elway and they said that at the beginning of Tebow-mania they likened John Elway to Rachel Phelps. I thought the reference was spot on!
