Rotowire.com Magazine Draft Today

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Dec 19, 2011 8:27 am

This afternoon Rotowire.com is assembling 15 owners for an NFBC-style mock draft with the results appearing in their magazine next month. I'm one of the drafters and looking forward to the 23-round draft. I'll tease some early results here and give you folks some data to nibble on. Should be fun.

I don't have draft order just yet, but look for that soon and be ready to help the Commish out!!

Not that any of these industry writers should be influenced by this, but we are using MockDraftCentral.com and their player default rankings will be there for everyone to use. I see some variations from the player default list we will have in our draft software, which makes things interesting. Here are the first 45 players on MDC's ADP list:

1) Matt Kemp OF LA
2) Ryan Braun OF MIL
3) Albert Pujols 1B
4) Miguel Cabrera 1B DET
5) Jose Bautista OF,3B TOR
6) Justin Verlander SP DET
7) Adrian Gonzalez 1B BOS
8) Troy Tulowitzki SS COL 8.22
9) Justin Upton OF ARI
10) Evan Longoria 3B TB
11) Joey Votto 1B CIN
12) Robinson Cano 2B NYY
13) Roy Halladay SP PHI
14) Jacoby Ellsbury OF BOS
15) Prince Fielder 1B FA
16) Clayton Kershaw SP LA
17) Jose Reyes SS MIA
18) Carlos Gonzalez OF COL
19) Curtis Granderson OF NYY
20) Dustin Pedroia 2B BOS
21) Cliff Lee SP PHI
22) Hanley Ramirez SS MIA
23) Tim Lincecum SP SF
24) Andrew McCutchen OF PIT
25) Felix Hernandez SP SEA
26) Mike Stanton OF MIA
27) Josh Hamilton OF TEX
28) Ian Kinsler 2B TEX
29) Jered Weaver SP ANA
30) Mark Teixeira 1B NYY
31) CC Sabathia SP NYY
32) Carl Crawford OF BOS
33) David Wright 3B NYM
34) Adrian Beltre 3B TEX
35) Cole Hamels SP PHI
36) Jay Bruce OF CIN
37) Elvis Andrus SS TEX
38) Matt Holliday OF STL
39) Dan Haren SP ANA
40) Ryan Zimmerman 3B WAS
41) David Price SP TB
42) Carlos Santana C,1B CLE
43) Brian McCann C ATL
44) Paul Konerko 1B,DH CHW
45) Hunter Pence OF PHI

Thoughts?

Outside of the obvious in Braun....

I'd be surprised if pitching went as high in our drafts. I don't think I've been a part of an NFBC draft where three pitchers went in the first 16 picks.

Tulo and Ellsbury seem to be more highly regarded by the NFBC crowd than elsewhere.

I agree, I would expect each of those pitchers to have NFBC ADPs about 5-10 spots lower than listed on that order. I wouldn't be surprised to see Reyes end up with a 1st round ADP, and Kinser to move closer to the first half of round 2 than the second half. I think the hype will move Stanton up a few spots as we get closer to live draft day as well.

Okay, I've got the fourth pick today. Sure wish Braunie hadn't been suspected (ALLEGEDLY) of using PEDs. Now it's time to make some decisions:
Kemp
Pujols
Cabrera
Tulo
Adrian Gonzalez

Whatcha got for me? ;)

Kemp and Pujols will more than likely be gone.
Miggy is solid year in year out. But may be gone too.
Tulo strong pick, position plays a factor.
Gonzalez injury history might scare me at 4th pick.
Find this year's Kemp and you will have a leg up.

Can't go wrong with Anyone after Pujols and Kemp. Tulo gets a leg up for position scarcity, but my preference is the .325/35/125 that you are almost guaranteed with Miggy or Adrian. Injuries also play a factor with Tulo.

First round is not about gambling. If Miggy is there...TAKE HIM! :D
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Color me shocked that Kemp wasn't anywhere in the first 15 picks... did I miss some news?

You can set my KDS right now for the 1-2 turn if that's what can be expected as a typical first round. Where the hell is Kemp?

the 2nd round was much better than the first. Bautista #1? teixeira? the equivalent of Joba as #1 sp a few years ago.

The guy who took Bautista first overall then followed up with Victorino in the 2nd round should be banned for the remainder of the draft right now.

I completely concur. I think sometimes these "experts" like to be all cute and controversial in an attempt to come off looking innovative and ingenious, but it's just plain dumb to those of us who actually play and win these competitions.

I don't agree with the pick, but I recall many mocking Shandler for choosing Braun second overall last year in an early industry draft. If you believe in a guy and have valid reasons for doing so, I say run with him.

I apologize for not posting more results earlier, but I had something come up during this draft and I had to call Tom in from the bullpen before it was complete. I didn't get the time to post these early results like I originally wanted to.

But thanks to Jeff Erickson for gathering all 15 owners together and running an NFBC-style draft for 23 rounds. I'm positive that Rotowire's readers will enjoy this content in the magazine and I'm sure it's already being talked about on Sirius Radio's Fantasy Channel. I'll be on with Jeff on Friday at 11:30 am ET to talk about this draft and more about the NFBC. Tune in.

Anyway, I'm sure Jeff wouldn't mind if we debate the first six rounds. There's plenty here, especially where Ryan Braun landed, where the Starting Pitchers went, top picks and more. Here are the results and let's have a fun discussion:
