Test League

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Dec 21, 2011 11:14 pm

This is just an idea and the Baseball Forecaster should get the credit.
It was brought up in the early pages of the book. I've just changed it a little time-wise.
We have 30 round drafts with faab.
We have 50 round drafts without faab.
Since the new MLB contract with the players extends the all-star break another day (reportedly, not verified), what if we had a 50 round draft with faab one time only, set for the all star break.
It could be the day after the all star game and maybe give hope to some teams with crippling injury or, at the least, give us something to do during the break.
We can be given a smaller amount to make it easier, say $100. Or keep it at $1000 to make it easier for programmers.
Maybe we could have a couple of leagues this year as a test run.

Like I said, just an idea, shoot away. :)
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Drafting for money can be a year-long pursuit by creating a more diverse product line.

Examples:

1. We have the current off-season drafts for the oncoming season.

2. Suggestion: concurrently, add off-season drafts based on format where you draft by decades rather than over 100 years' worth of players.

3. Mid-season Doughboy-Style draft

4. Special "Mr. October" Playoff Draft:

I would suggest the following:

Draft takes place in July, August and/or September.

Object: draft a team of players who are both the best available but whose MLB team is, in your assessment, most likely to reach the WS since the farther the team advances, the more ABs available for the players you drafted.

When: Drafts in July and August add more risk, since a lot of MLB teams still in contention.

What is scored: post-season stats only. Anomaly is that you could have a best player on a team who exits early, be outperformed by a lesser player whose team makes it farther into the playoffs and piles more counting stats. Adds a different layer of risk. Allows several strategies: Spread the risk -- draft from multiple contenders. Try to narrow down who will be the 2 WS teams and draft most of your players from those rosters. Etc.

Element of risk added by holding the drafts earlier rather than later when some of the teams have already clinched. The earlier the draft, the larger the potential pool of MLB teams to choose from.

Buehler?

You see what I mean, DOUGHBOYS -- it doesn't really matter what I write.

I only get replies when I add my name to a thread title that features a dollar sign, and typically the reply is a number, a period followed by an unknown guy's name.

No problem.
We've had mid-year drafts in the past, and if the demand is there, I'm sure Greg will make that happen.

The good thing about the NFBC is that no matter who brings up a good idea, if it a good one it'll snowball and Greg is open to all new ideas.....especially good ones :)

And, if you'll notice, I started the thread and only had your reply.
It's not the size of the voice, it's the size of the idea.
Right now, it seems nobody likes the ideas :)

You could do this earlier and it is more of a crapshoot - still fun and lots of guys whose bigger $$ teams are on the rocks who would play

You could do it later and still get a lot of entries and make it fun in a different way by saying that you can only draft ONE player from each of the projected playoff teams......so if you have the first pick for instance and think the Tigers are going to do well you have to choose between Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder.......

So many variations are possible.

Since we're not getting a response from Greg, are we to assume that he's too busy or worse ... he may not like these format ideas at all? :o
