Fielder Signs With The Tigers
Yahoo reporting that Fielder has signed with Detroit. Early reports said the deal was worth nine years. No word yet on the dollar amount.
I'm stunned. Never saw the Tigers being in the market for Fielder.
Guess Prince is going back home.

Looks like Boras gets bailed out again. About $24 million per year, not bad when it looked like the market had colapsed on him.

Early word is Fielder will play 1B and Cabrera will move to another position.

You got that right!NorCalAtlFan wrote:Miggy #1 if he does move to 3rd!!
Jim Bowden just said "Jim Leyland won a World Series with Bobby Bonilla at 3B so he can certainly win one with Miguel Cabrera at 3B."

If they seriously want to try him at 3b full time, that moves him way down my board, not up.Winston's Empire wrote:You got that right!NorCalAtlFan wrote:Miggy #1 if he does move to 3rd!!

It definitely moves down every pitcher on Detroit.
There's no reason for Cabrera to play 3B this year. Bowden is generally an idiot.

Re: Fielder Signs With The Tigers
Cabrera was a Third Baseman before coming to Detroit. For this move to pay off long term this is the logical play. They will find out if it's a go very quickly. They will need him there when Victor Martinez returns. The short term solution is a 1B, DH split. I doubt that's going to happen.Hells Satans wrote:It definitely moves down every pitcher on Detroit.

It will be interesting but I'm sure Cabrera has signed off on any plans that they may have. Third Base is the obvious first choice.
Detroit sports radio is also speculating that they want to move Cabrera for 2 solid pitchers. I doubt very seriously that will happen.
Cabrera will be walked 50-60 less times this year with Fielder behind him as opposed to the platoon that would have surfaced there in Martinez's absence.
Great day to be a Tigers fan.

Re: Fielder Signs With The Tigers
Cabrera had 108 walks last year while hitting .344, including 22 Intentional Walks.
I'm happy for Tigers fans because they will love Prince. I'm not sure what his body will look like 8 or 9 years from now, but he's a baseball junkie who will be productive for much of his contract. I'm not sure if Cabrera can still play third base -- he certainly doesn't have the same body that he had when he came up to the majors -- but we might find out soon. I do think the Tigers will try him there if he is willing.
Tigers will be tough to beat if everyone stays healthy. We'll miss ya Prince. Now, what do I do with this Fielder Brewers' FatHead hanging in my office? Time to come down, I guess.

Cabrera was an awful 3B when he was 22 and 50 lbs lighter, which is why the Marlins moved him to 1B. The easy answer is let Cabrera/Fielder split DH/1B this year and trade VMart next year (he only has one year left on the deal anyway and tehy aren't going to resign him). Moving Cabrera to 3B would be a disaster and makes even less sense considering Castellanos is the best prospect in their system.

Re: Fielder Signs With The Tigers
Cabrera will definitely BB less, but more like 20-25 times less. Teams will still IBB him late in games and bring a LOOGY in to face Fielder. And part of the reason why Cabrera is such a great hitter is that he doesn't swing at crap. He still won't. Teams aren't going to throw him belt high fastballs just because Fielder is up next. Cabrera is the best hitter in baseball.
