Astros Name Myers Closer

:o

And just like that one team owner finds mushroom gravy in each of 43 slow drafts with a round 20-25 pick.....

The Magic of Early Drafting

Astros Name Myers Closer; Rework Vesting Option
By Tim Dierkes [February 28, 2012 at 9:03am CST]
The Astros named Brett Myers their closer, manager Brad Mills told reporters this morning.

According to Alyson Footer, GM Jeff Luhnow brought the idea to Mills, who liked it and approached Myers.

Myers' $10MM vesting option for 2013 was reworked to reflect the role change, tweets Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle.

It takes away a middling starter and adds a third closer for some early drafters.
If a team has plenty of starters, it could be a benefit.
Not near Braun type development, but significant.
Any Sizemore's that were taken in early drafts look to be bad moves. Much like the early, early drafts with some folks losing VMart.
We cross our fingers and hope for the best in spring.
What is unusual about the Myers move is that it provides somewhat good news.
Most teams, with roster in hand at this time of year, only get bad news.
The bad news in this case, is for the Carpenter, Lopez, Abreu, and Lyon backers.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

I was one of those Lopez backers...just thought he had done the best job in the 8th inn last yr and thats the usual progression w/ closers. He & Abreu would be like Salas & Sanchez for the Cards last yr, maybe Abreu has better stuff, but the older guy w/ more exp. had 1st crack at the job.

Never saw this coming and feel like I should've, it isn't like Meyers never closed before. Only consolation is team rockitsauce grabbed Myers for $13 in the auction after MLBC draft. W/ Kimbrel & Storen already on the squad I don't think saves should be a problem. Now who replaces him in the rotation........Drabek :o nah, will hafta go 6-3 for a while.
Always be closing.

This season is already taking in drawbacks and spring training games haven't even started yet.
Freddy Freeman dislocates a knee cap, an injury that's happened before. Feliz may be limited to 130 innings. Hanson has an innocent knock on the noggin which makes us think Morneau. Sizemore (it doesn't matter which) will miss spring training and beyond. Franklin Gutierrez has a bum pec. And several starters are nursing ailments.
Gee, I can't wait for spring training games  ... :(

His ADP in the NFBC before yesterday's announcement was 335. This just shows you how fluid this crazy closer's role with every team these days. Basically anyone can get thrown into the role and succeed enough to be valuable to an MLB team and to fantasy teams. For us, trying to "guess" those guys who will get those roles is the hard part and in some regards the luck factor.

Sounds like I should write a column this week on closers. Thanks Norm!!
