Presenting YOUR 100KTeam

Post by Gekko » Sat Mar 24, 2012 6:53 pm

In case anyone is bored, here's a recap of my main event draft from today. It doesn't look very promising for me to attend the NY draft in person, so my partner will be driving the bus there. He has different player valuations than me (which is why I have no problem showing my team). Any comments are welcome. :)

1. Kinsler 2B - Took him over Cano. Hoping Kinsler can bump that BA up this year. If it happens, he could be a top 3 player
2. Pedroia 2B - Didn't want to fill up MI slot so soon, but needed some plus BA to offset Kinsler
3. Lawrie 3B - Wilcard. I know he's hurt now and will probably not have the green light as much. With 3b so weak, decided to take a shot. Was hoping Zimmerman or Sandoval would have slipped, but they didn't.
4. Wieters C - When Posey went a few picks b4 me in the 4th, I thought a catcher run may be starting. It didn't. M.Montero went the end of round 6. If only I could have switched my 4th and 6th round picks, I could have had d.Price and Montero instead of Darvish and Wieters.
5. A.Jones OF - Was hoping for Choo Choo bird, however he went right before me.
6. Darvish SP - Wildcard. Don't know much about him except his numbers in Japan looked pretty good.
7. Aybar SS - Kept a balanced team with getting a little bit more speed. Was surprised he was still on the board seeing how Dee Gordon went in the early 6th.

{8th round was supposed to be the round to select my first closer}

8. B.Butler U - I knew I was going to get my hands dirty on the bating average end later in the draft, so decided to get nice batting avg/he guy. I don't like that my utility spot is filled so early, and it did come back to bite me later in the draft.
9. Pineda SP - Needed a #2SP and went with the best remaining on my board
10. Goldschmidt 1B - Wildcard. Could be good power source. Could be part-time player.
11. R.Roberts 2B/3B- Wasn't exactly sure what to do here. In retrospect, I probably should have taken the top OF on my board.
12. D.Holland SP - Up to this point, I only had 2 pitchers on my roster. As my 12th round pick was coming up, I told myself, I have to go closer 100%. When it got to me, I saw there were a few closers left and I decided to push them one more round. So, it made sense to go SP, and it was a coin flip between him and Scherzer. Maybe took him a round early, but because I was running short on pitching had to make a stand.
13. S.Marshall RP - Saw the news that Madson was DOA.
14. Liriano SP - Wildcard. He's had good spring numbers before only to then disappoint once the season starts. Honestly wouldn't surprise me if he's pretty good this year or pretty shitty.
15. Cain OF - As it got closer to my pick, I noticed the 3 teams picking after me already had 2, 3, 3 closers respectively. I decided to push my 2nd closer one more round. With only one OF on my roster, I decided to take one here. Got someone I don't know a lot about other than he's having a nice spring. Hoping to catch lightening in a bottle.
16. M.Capps RP - 2nd closer. And in the 16th round! BANG!
17. Presley OF - When I picked in the 16th round, there were 5 or 6 OFers that i liked. I hoped one would make it back to me in the 17th. Unfortunately, they all got taken. Went with Presley for some sb.
18. J.Nicasio SP - When it got to this point, I had a pool of 4 or 5 SP I liked (Floyd, Niese, Buehrle,). Didn't really matter which one, just needed to get my #5SP
19. A.J. Pierzynski C - 2nd catcher. should get decent counting stats with hurting BA
20. Niese SP - I almost took him in the 18th round, so I was happy he lasted another 2 rounds. I thought for sure Ray Murphy from BBHQ was going to take him 1 pick b4 me, but he passed.
21. Quentin OF - Should provide a nice power bat when he returns from injury (hopefully I don't have to carry him for 2 months though).
22. Bauer SP - Wildcard. Everything I know tells me not to trust a 21 year old pitcher, but I knew someone drafting after me had a hardon for him, so if I was going to get him, this was the round. :)
23. Wiggington 1B/3B/OF - Most of the quality guys were gone, so I had to settle on him. Should be decent until Howard comes back.

Hope you enjoyed the write-up :)

This team worries me because I know how much you know and to me it looks terrible. Makes me question what I think I know!

Lots of upside, lots of bust potential.. a reach at nearly every pick, questionable starting pitching and closers.... just another typical Gekko draft.. and he will probably win... We seem to go through this every year and just goes to show that you never know.

Pumping up Kelly Johnson when you were targeting Kinsler and Pedroia. Very nice!

Its the truth.. but you have a track record that speaks for itself so who am I to question... You pick the players you want and I give you a lot of credit for sticking with the guys you want, no matter what. I wasn't being critical.. just truthful.

I would not be surprised to hear that you don't own any of these players but that these players have really been picked in these rounds by others.

I'd say the odds of Mark not being in NY next week are about the same as the odds were that the Anonymous in the 1300 NY Auction was anyone but Frank Kowalski. Good luck next week Mark, you sure are a character.

No doubt Gates, it will be a blast. Still, I think I would have preferred just hanging out at the bar with you three rather than having to draft against you. ;)

See you next week Bud.

I was in this same league draft and can vouch that these were his first 23 picks.
