Different draft strategy

Post by sranaghan11 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 10:35 am

I tried to load up on pitching in a 12 team league....I do not hate my offense. I actually think I could contend with this team...I think I may need to get lucky with an OF that emerges due to injury or the like and I may have just enough speed and power on here to compliment this pitching...

C
Avila
Suzuki

1b
Hosmer

2b
Kipnis

SS
Dee Gordon

3b
Ryan Zimmerman

CI
Youkilis

MI
Pastornicky :o

OF
Ellsbury
Duda
Mayberry JR
JD Martinez
C Ross

DH
Trumbo

SP
Kershaw
Weaver
Strasburg
Darvish
Cueto
Kuroda
Buccholz
Walden
Valverde

I have some bats if trumbo doesnt play....MI could kill me but he could be a play for a little while....I am guessing this thing has no chance cause I cannot judge these teams...

I feel like I have enough speed and the power is fairly well spread out....Ellsbury is gonna hit home runs..period...

No way for a 12-teamer, you are extremely light in Steals and Homers.

I've got those starters around 235 HR and 130 SB, both are way too low to be in the overall competition.

so shouldnt you be shooting for like 270 in hrs? thats like an avg of 19 per player....as far as steals...isnt about 160 or 170 the target?

I can see your point on power but not the speed....I am guessing a lot of teams are gonna be a little light power wise...there just are not a plethora of power options out there unless you are loaded with corner infielders....

Those are better targets for the 15-teamers. In the 12's, you should be closer to 300 HR and 200 SB.

that is interesting...I find it hard to believe if you want stable pitching...I know I went overboard there...that you are going to get 300 home runs at the expense of power and speed.....show me a team that has 300 and 200 with at least 2 solid pitchers...yeah you may find some with beckett and daniel hudson as your 1 and 2 but I guess thats what its all about.....I may need a little more speed but there will not be 300 hr teams all over the place...maybe half of the 12 if they are lucky...

Target numbers from Sports Draft Daily were .280+ ba, 1125 runs, 290 HR,, 1100 RBI and 190 SB.....104 wins, 3.40 ERA, 1.20WHIP, 1425K's and 104 saves for Pitching, for 12 team Online Championship to even come close to competing in the Overall

Thanks Syracuse...I got the pitching covered...now I just need to find 40 more home runs and 25 steals somewhere...I think I can find the steals but getting from 260 to 300 in hrs might be tough...I have 20 steals on the bench too....

I always do bad in these drafts cause I can never get any balance..if I go for offense I take all offense and cannot mix and match properly...luckily I like you guys to give you donations every few years.... :?

Those numbers are about right, I'd except the BA to be a little lower, closer to .275 though. More available hitters positively affect the R/HR/RBI totals more than they do the BA/SB numbers.

I was happy with targets on this team; everyone has their own opinions on projections, but even if you might think this team isn't quite up to the overall targets, this team will crush those 235/130 numbers I have your roster at, and I have 2 stud SP pitchers:

B.Posey, J.Lucroy
M.Teixeira, R.Zimmerman, M.Moustakas (J.Morneau, C.Figgins)
K.Johnson, D.Gordon, E.Aybar (R.Raburn, M.Aviles)
R.Braun, S.Choo, L.Morrison, A.Rios, L.Duda (M.Moreland, M.Brantley)

C.Lee, D.Haren, J.Johnson, T.Hanson, N.Feliz, T.Lilly, E.Jackson, J.Teheran
J.Motte, J.Guerra, J.Johnson

(I usually go after a few early two step SP in waivers, then hope to find someone willing to keep for a while; if not, the end of the rotation is going to be revolving door for a while.)

I dont see your "crushing" home runs...I see about 265 or 270 for you and like 240 245 for me...where are your 170 steals...hahaha...I think you are pretty light there.....I guess my pitching crushes your two "studs" with ks and whip.....the back end of that rotation looks pretty poor...good luck with that team..its not that much above a lot of offenses that didnt draft that way....

I think the problem is everyone's "projections"

once the season starts about all those are good for is wiping your A$$

While I agree there's little merit to projections, but it's still the only way, other than abstract opinion, to compare teams right now.

My homers are about where you think they are, a little below what I was shooting for, but not bad by any means.

However, the Steals? What are you missing here?

Gordon 45
Aybar 24
Choo 23
Braun 21
Rios 21
K.Johnson 14
Remaining Starters 19

That's 167 before working in Brantley/Figgins, I'll push 190 with this team if they stay healthy.

Your steals actually aren't as bad as I first thought, I plugged your team in and have you at 159 SB before your bench, you should be fine there for about 175-180. Power is the big problem, I've got 247 hr before the bench, but I have your lineup at 216 HR (and light Runs & HRs, good AVG/SB tho). You bench adds in a decent amount during the season, but seems like you are way behind the 8-ball in power and it's not as easy a category to pick up during the season as you were making it out to be -- at least without killing you batting average in the process. Pitching is easy to add, not quality power hitting.
