Proposed NFBC Main Event Prize Structure

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:38 am

We added 30 more teams to the NFBC Main Event than planned and thus we have extra prize money to distribute among the overall prize pool. I feel good about our league payout structure right now, so that will remain the same. But we will add $12,000 to the overall prize pool and bulk up 2nd through 7th this way:

NFBC Main Event Revised Overall Prize Pool
1st - $100,000
2nd - $25,000
3rd - $15,000
4th - $10,000
5th - $6,000
6th - $3,500
7th - $2,500
8th - $1,500
9th - $1,400
10th - $1,400

I think this is a fair, solid overall prize structure. Next year, we begin increasing the grand prize beyond $100,000. That prize was originally based on 300 teams (although I knew 2nd through 10th was weak at the time) and now that we've reached 420 teams it's time to look at an increase for the overall prize. But that's for next year.

Okay, thoughts on this prize pool? Thanks all for making 2012 such a big success.

Nice bump up for 2nd-4th place money. $5k bump for 2nd and $2.5K for 3rd and 4th means that you now have 4 top money spots of 5 figures or more! :D I'd still like to take home the $100k check but 5 figures makes a nice consolation prize. Can't wait to see how big the top prize grows to next year.

Playing around with the percentages for what feels and looks right, I come up with:
* pay 50% of the available pool to the overall winner
* pay 40% to the rest of the top 5
* pay 10% to the rest of the top 10

I wouldn't want to reduce the $100k top prize at this point, but I wouldn't raise it until the other spots have caught up with the targeted percentages below, which would be at the 510 team mark. In the meantime, I like Greg's proposal since it's close to the mark with the exception of taking some out of each spot to keep the $100k intact.

Once we get to 510 teams, the payout could look like this:

1st $100,000 (50%)
2nd $35,000 (17%)
3rd $22,000 (11%)
4th $15,000 (7%)
5th $10,000 (5%)
6th $6,000 (3%)
7th $5,000 (2.5%)
8th $4,000 (2%)
9th $3,000 (1.5%)
10th $2,000 (1%)

I like Greg's proposal here. I can't see messing with the $100K top prize, too iconic, too important from a marketing standpoint.

I agree Glenn, but how do you feel about not raising it beyond $100k until we surpass 500 teams?

I think we should bulk up 2 through 10 first, then work with the top prize.

4th $15k
5th $10k
6th $6k
7th $5k
8th $4k

This looks like a nice balance to me.
Absolutely. One of the reasons I played the WCOFB the last two years is I really liked the payout structure, and not just the top prize. I knew that even if I was runnerup, I would be due a cool $50K. Of course, it would have been nicer had they actually paid it out, but that's another story for another time.
