Josh Johnson - Concerned?

Post by Hells Satans » Wed Apr 11, 2012 6:23 pm

Drafted him in the ME. Have watched both of his starts. He's not the same guy. Velocity is down, not missing bats. Most scary to me is that he looks afraid to throw his slider, presumably because of the shoulder injuries. Don't like what I'm seeing at all.

And that was before he gave up a bases loaded double to Freddy Galvis

I can't remember ever seeing him so hittable. Concerning for sure.

The guy is throwing 91-93 on the gun. The healthy JJ throws 95-98 gas.

Slider is the most taxing pitch on the arm. If he is not throwing it then I think it's easy to assume that he is not OK.

6 sliders tonight out of 83 pitches; 10 out of 93 in last start. Averaged around 25% sliders over the last few years, which is where he gets most of swinging strikes.

Scariest stat of night - Johnson had 1 swinging strike tonight

Johnson looks like Nolan Ryan compared to Lincecum

Lincecum is one guy I consciously avoided. Everything has been trending the wrong way the last 3 years. He can't hit 90 with any command. It's all junk now.

He's the 3rd best pitcher on his team.

While I won't deny Johnson was VERY hittable tonight - he was also a tad unlucky. Look at the boxscore for the 5th inning and you just see the 5 spot the Phillies hung up on him. Watch the game and you see a blown call on a stolen base on Pierre that would have been two outs and gotten Johnson out of the stretch. You also miss the next batter, Polanco hitting one off Johnson's foot and getting a lucky bounce into no man's land. Just saying - ump calls Pierre out at second and it might have been a different inning.

A tad unlucky? He gave up 11 hits and 6 ER in 3.2 IP. That boy must have walked under a ladder, had a black cat walk in front of him, broke a mirror and opened an umbrella indoors..... :o

Watching his games (I think he's fine and am very encouraged) and I've never seen a more unlucky pitcher.

Looked it up this morning. 41 hits in 28 innings. Of those 41 hits - 0 HRs, 5 2B, and 36 singles. 36 singles in 28 IP is almost impossibly unlucky.

Keep the faith JJ owners. Unlikely his .446 BABIP against will hold up.

I certainly hope you are right! Three games with ten or more hits already is CRUSHING my WHIP.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
