this is the point of the season (2-3 weeks in) where the hope and boundless optimism of draft day has faded and the reality of the 162-game grind is setting in.

If your team is off to a fabulous start it's almost worse, because we know it can't last. The crash back down to earth is inevitable.

The holes in our roster that weren't visible on draft day look like the Grand Canyon now. We are all taking hard looks at our teams, and our patience will surely be tested.

Of course, we are still so early in the season that the landscape (and the standings) will look much different a week from now. We know the standings mean nothing at this point, yet we look anyway.

Yup, at the draft, it was like... "well if Ben Revere and Andres Torres can give me 25 steals each, and I can get something from Liriano and Leake, I can run away with the title".... now its like... "If I could just pick up steals and a few starting pitchers in FAAB, I will have a shot at the title"..... In August, it will be.... "If I could just stay away from injured players, I will have a shot at the title next year".... And so it goes.

It's why I hate projections.
Nobody projected Revere to be sent down, least of all, those that drafted him!
Liriano owners had to expect different.
Jurrjens owners are like that painting that Quahogs likes so much!
And none of those three are even hurt.....
Their owners are 'projecting' over the porcelain now.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I don't buy into that the standings don't mean much at this point. All counting stats count, and if you are 25 K's or runs down, it not only put you in the hole but also likely reveals that you have a problem to address. So I always want my teams looking strong right now.

My attitude is that those leading at this point are probably riding some inflated highs that will inevitably come down..that is, David Wright is not going to bat .500..or .400...hell, he'll be lucky to take .300.

Similarly, those near the bottom are likely suffering from slow starts. Do you think Jeter will really finish with more HRs that Teixeira? Wait.......nah...... .

So while I languished at the bottom after week 2, the girlfriend asked "What now?"
To which I replied, "We sit back and allow the laws of probability set in"

Maybe David Wright does hit over .300
Maybe P Humber becomes a number 2 starter this year
Maybe Jake Peavy makes 30 starts and strikes out 200
Maybe Jim Johnson leads the majors in saves

With virtually all teams at the 10% pole, it makes it easy to look at "on pace" numbers (said with tongue firmly in cheek) ...

Matt Kemp is "on pace" for 90 home runs, but only 10 stolen bases ... what a bum ... how about those 50 stolen bases?

Only two players are "on pace" for 40-40 seasons ... Adam Jones and Yoenis Cespedes!

I believe it's way too early to assess those teams and players of mine that are doing poorly.....
But more than enough time for those doing well.

I don't necessarily disagree but I will say it depends. Are you 25 K's or runs down from the leaders or from your run-rate projections for what it would take to be at 80% of points available in the specific counting stat?

If you are 25 down from the current leaders, no real problem. If your team is not producing on a weekly basis the run-rate of counting stats you need to compile enough by the end of the year, then you need to take a cold-hard look at ability (are certain players cold or do they just suck) and opportunity (I expected that guy to hit second or third and they are hitting seventh) to see if you need to make adjustments or ride that cold wave.

I would say that the standings themselves are not important at all at this point. There's so little separation between teams that there's a huge amount of point movement for categories like saves, wins, SB, and HR when you have a decent day.

That said, I already know which of my teams have a real chance at money and which ones will require some magic. I knew it the moment the drafts ended.
