Another New Closer!

Post by Edwards Kings » Wed May 09, 2012 1:17 pm

My turn.

From RotoWorld: Casey Janssen will serve as the Blue Jays' closer until Sergio Santos (shoulder) returns from the disabled list. Francisco Cordero was removed from the role after blowing his third save of the season Tuesday night. Janssen has posted a 5.23 ERA in his first 10 appearances this season, but he also has an impressive 11/1 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings and owns a 3.21 ERA since the start of the 2010 season. Santos should be back by the end of the month, but Janssen makes for a pretty nice short-term pickup in all fantasy formats.

He is owned in only 6.6% of the NFBC Leagues. There is now a "2012 Closer Futures" pit at the NYSE (between the F.C.O.J. and the Pork Bellies Pits). Here are two of the people that guessed right last week.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I may not be very good at fantasy baseball, but even I could see that Cordero is garbage.

Always a double whammy after a closer loses his job after being pounded.
Bad stats, no more save chances for the week.

casey janssen and dolis making it look easy... totally bizarre season so far.. and just a touch frustrating. ok. thats an outright lie. its been perhaps the most frustrating season to date. i hope the rest of the closers go down this week and that includes mr kenley jansen, papelbon, kimbrel, nathan, robertson, everybody!... a total turnover.

Exactly as you said 2 weeks ago and I agreed then and now. I mentioned Jansen or Perez as most likely options back then. lot of people spent big FAAB on him for 2-3 week stopgap.

Robertson struggled last night and loads them up with no outs tonight and blows the save. I'm not convinced that Soriano doesnt get his fair share of Save opps with the yankees this year.

The way this year is going, Robertson and Soriano could just be two in a long line of Rivera hopefuls this year....
Phelps needs a job when Pettitte comes back, right? :)

The Yankees are just going to trade for a "Proven Closer" anyway.

Don't they already have this in Soriano who they pay $12 million a year to and had 45 saves in one year for tampa? I just don't get why they moved Robertson from his comfort zone when they had a guy that has done it before. I thought I read a stat the other day that said Robertson has appeared in the seventh and eighth innings 40 times in his career and Soriano did it twice. Robertson much more valuable to the Yankees (not fantasy baseball) as the guy he has always been. Just my opinion....

You may be right, but I think what has given the Yankees pause is the fact that Soriano has given up too many base runners via the hit and walk this year (13 hits and 8 walks in 12 IP). In twelve outings so far this year, he has yet to have a "shut-down" inning.
