CONGRATULATIONS to Dave Potts of Auburn, Alabama for winning the 2012 NFBC Main Event and our $100,000 grand prize. Dave has competed in the NFBC Main Event each of the last five seasons and this year he hit it out of the park, winning the March 24th Las Vegas Main Event League 1 with 130 points and winning the overall title with 3,628.0 points (86.38% of all available points). Dave also finished 3rd overall in the NFBC XII as he made a great run at that $50,000 grand prize and the $75,000 cash bonus for winning both Mains. GREAT JOB DAVE!!

Kudos to Chad Schroeder as well as he finished 2nd in the Main Event and 4th in the NFBC XII, making a run at both overall titles as well. Chad led both Mains for much of the last three months and really had a historic season, just missing both overall titles. Kudos to all league champions in both formats and for everyone who cashed during this marathon season.

Here's the Top 100 teams in the NFBC Main Event, led by our 9th champion, Dave Potts:

I do know that Dave will be at Ron Shandler's Arizona Fall League Symposium, so anyone who is attending that event can buy Dave a beer there and congratulate him. If you can't make that event next month, feel free to congratulate him here. We all feel worn out by the marathon that was just completed, but the least we can do is give our best wishes to THE CHAMP!!!

I'll give you my CONGRATS here Dave, but it will be more fun when we share a beer together in Arizona. Are you ready for that?

One of the great things about our champs is that they usually prove they not only can win the Main Event but other contest forms as well. Dave is a perfect example. He won:

NFBC Main Event League title
NFBC XII Main Event League title
NFBC Online Championship - 2 league titles
NFBC $375 Slow Draft League title
Finished 2nd in $1,300 AL Auction League
Finished 2nd in $1,300 NL Auction League
Finished 2nd in the Mixed Auction League
Finished 3rd in the Super League

That's a pretty diversified portfolio Dave. CONGRATS AGAIN!! :D

Here's the profile I wrote about Dave back in July. Congrats on a great season Dave. :)

With more than four months of the baseball season in the books, Chad Schroeder is chasing NFBC history. Attempting to be the first person to win the Main Event and NFBC XII in the same season, Schroeder has solidifed himself as the team to beat in both national events the rest of the way.

But Schroeder is not the only pursuing NFBC immortality and the $75,000 bonus that comes with winning both of those national events. As July closes in on August, Dave Potts has also positioned himself as a team with a legitimate chance to make fantasy baseball history.

Entering play on Tuesday, Potts was in fifth place in the Main Event and second behind Schroeder in the NFBC XII. It's clearly been a season to remember thus far for Potts as well.

"Both teams have been relatively healthy, which is always important," he said. "On my Main Event team, the two biggest keys were on Draft Day - getting Miguel Cabrera at five and getting David Wright in the fifth round. Wright was dropping on the first weekened because of the injury concern and getting that kind of production out of a fifth-round pick is huge. I have also avoided pitching disasters for the most part. I don't have great pitching, but nobody has really hurt me either.

"The key to the success of the XII team is just how well the draft fell together for me. Sometimes it's just dumb luck. I had no plans to draft Adam Jones, David Ortiz or Alex Rios, but they all just fell into my lap. That draft just unfoled perfectly for me. Every single one of my Top 20 picks have produced. That's the good thing about drafting 20-plus teams - one of them is bound to work out."

As a long-time fantasy baseball player and five-year NFBC veteran, Potts definitely owes his success this season to more than simple good luck. Identifying and landing some value picks late in the draft and making prudent moves on the Waiver Wire has also proven to be critical factors in his teams' success.

In the Main Event, for example, Potts was able to land Allen Craig and Dayan Viciedo in
Rounds 21 and 22. Both have provided solid production. He also snared A.J. Burnett off the Waiver Wire in Week 2 for a mere $20. Potts also picked up Burnett and Tom Wilhelmsen off the Waiver Wire on his NFBC XII team.

The race to the finish line and an NFBC title is always intense. But it's going to be even more so for Potts with his top Main Event team because he's not the only one in his league chasing the overall title this year.

In fact, Potts isn't even in first place in his league. The tag team of Andrew Nolan and Christopher Stephenson are pacing that Las Vegas league and currently third overall in the Main Event.

"They have a fantastic team," Potts said. "There are another five teams in that league with over 90 points that could easily pass me, managed by great players like Will Tyrer and Shawn Childs."

When the 37-year-old Potts isn't busy trying to fortify his NFBC teams, you can find him working on his music at http://www.davepotts.com. He's also married with two children.

Needless to say, if he's able to put it all together and make a run at the Main Event and NFBC XII championships that will be one of the finest fantasy sonnets he's ever composed.

"I feel like my hitting on the Main Event team is very solid and should continue to produce barring injury," he said. "The pitching is sort of hanging on and could go either way. My guess is my pitching won't be strong enough to win the league (so) I will be thrilled if it can hang on enough for a Top 10 finish in the overall. I finished 11th overall last year and I think it would sound way cooler to be able to say Top 10.

"The XII team is in a similar situation. The hitting is going strong and should be OK. I think I have enough solid starters to mix and match but to have a shot to win the overall I would need a couple of my starters to really pitch over their head for a couple months."

Congrats Dave! We battled with Dave all season and although the end of the year standings don't reflect it, it was a pretty darn good league battle. On July 24th, Tom wrote a profile piece on Dave and at the time, we were in first place. I remember reading that piece and thinking how the heck are we going to hold this guy off. Truth be told we couldn't do it, or even come close. His offense was so solid and Dave did a fantastic job of managing his pitching staff. Our fate may have been sealed on Draft Day when we passed on Miggy and grabbed Tulo. A great great season Dave, and a whole lot of fun. Congratulations!!! There were a lot of heavy hitters in our league, so it was very well earned!

Thanks so much for all the kind words guys, it means a lot. It feels a little surreal right now, I really didn't believe I had a shot to win this thing until the final weekend. I have never watched games/at bats/pitches as close as I did the last few nights. I just want to say again how impressive Chad's season was as well, it could have easily gone either way. The other guys near the top of the rankings and other league winners, congrats on a job well done. Just a few lucky bounces here and there is all that separates a lot of teams, there are quite a few names up on this leaderboard that are way over my head and I truly am humbled just to be on the same list. I look forward to seeing a lot of you again in Vegas next March.

I guess the theme song for my movie will have to wait until next year! Great time with you in Vegas and I'm glad you earned a lifetime free pass for baseball from your wife. Congrats on the win

Dave,
Even though I sent you a personal message via text yesterday first thing in the morning, I felt the need to congratulate you publicly in this forum. So congrats champ! Savor the moment for as long as you can, and extraordinarily well done! :)

P.S. I will try to ignore the variety of other sh*tbag finishes you had this year that will undoubtedly be swept under the carpet by your otherwise amazing accomplishments.

Well, just how do you win the $100,000 grand prize in the NFBC? Draft a solid team and then GRIND BABY GRIND!!

Dave Potts drafted on the First Weekend in Las Vegas and competed in Las Vegas League 1 with the likes of Andy Nolan and Chris Stephenson (finished 2nd, near top of Lifetime Standings), Steve Wells (finished 3rd here and won the NFBC Draft Champions National Championship), Shawn Childs (NFBC Hall of Famer), Will Tyrer, past league champion J.T. Visco and many other NFBC veterans. It was a veteran filled league.

Dave drafted from the 5th spot and came away with this lineup after Draft Day:
1. Miguel Cabrera
2. Adrian Beltre
3. Felix Hernandez
4. Ben Zobrist
5. David Wright
6. Shane Victorino
7. Joe Mauer
8. Matt Garza
9. Michael Pineda
10. Max Scherzer
11. Heath Bell
12. Derek Jeter
13. Aaron Hill
14. Matt Capps
15. Nick Swisher
16. Scott Baker
17. Alfonso Soriano
18. John Buck
19. Jonathan Niese
20. Denard Span
21. Dayan Viciedo
22. Allen Craig
23. Sean Rodriguez
24. Tyler Clippard
25. Bartolo Colon
26. Casey Kotchman
27. Tommy Milone
28. Randall Delgado
29. Clayton Richard
30. Marco Estrada

Dave worked the free agent wire for saves throughout the year and succeeded there. He also picked up a few arms to round out his pitching staff. Here are his key pickups during the season:

A.J. Burnett $20
Scott Downs $237
Ernesto Frieri $65
Luke Gregorson $62
Roy Oswalt $33
Tom Wilhelmsen $44
Jake Arrieta $12
Jim Henderson $8
Anthony Gose

Now that's how you win $105,000!! Simple as that!! GREAT JOB DAVE AND CONGRATS!!

Dave, when I sat down with you at the NCAA Final Four Viewing Party this past March, I sure wish I had spent less time bitching about Ohio State spitting the bit against Kansas and more time asking you fantasy baseball advice. An amazing season by a real nice guy. Congratulations for being King of the Hill this season and for all the amazing achievements you've accomplished this year in a variety of formats. Truly a year any of us would be tremendously proud to have on our records.
