Greg & Shawn's LABR AL Roster
Posted: Sun Mar 03, 2013 10:37 am
Well, one of two LABR Auction Leagues is in the books. AL was last night here in Phoenix and NL is tonight starting at 5 pm PT. We're here to win BOTH titles, so be ready for some aggressive strategies!!
As you may have seen on SportsDraftDaily, Shawn had his game plan all mapped out ahead of time and we had a core group of stars we were targeting. Whether they are the right core or not is up to debate, but we got Mike Trout at what we expected ($42) and Evan Longoria ($31) one buck less than we expected. As is always the case with Shawn, though, our plan got a bit side-tracked when Albert Pujols almost went to Steve Gardner for $33. We were targeting Eric Hosmer at $21, so when we got Pujols for $34 it was time to punt saves...again!! That's where we borrowed $13 for our LABR Sequester!!
We still stuck to our plan and got Alex Gordon for $42 and then overspent for Dustin Ackley at $16 as second basemen and all offensive guys were going for more than we expected. We were more than halfway through the auction and we still didn't have any pitchers and we had only $115 left for 18 players. Not to be outdone by himself, Shawn jumped in on Mark Teixeira for $23, leaving us with $92 for 17 players. That's when we sat and watched for about 90 minutes.
With so much money going for offense while we watched, we had a feeling we could still fill a pretty competitive starting rotation if we punted saves. So we got Matt Moore at $21 and Brandon Morrow at $19 and Trevor Bauer at $7. Tommy Hanson came later at $7 and Matt Harrison at $8 and we rounded it out with John Lackey at $1 and Danny Hultzen with our last pick for $2. Possible saves may come from Al Albuquerque at $4.
We both thought it would be tough to round out the offense and get enough at-bats as we had $10 left for six players, but getting Vernon Wells at $2, Brennan Bosch for $2 and Jason Bay for $2 didn't hurt. We also got Mike Zunino for $2, which could prove to be a solid catcher alternative if he gets called up in late May or early June.
The one thing to remember with this league is that it is a trading league. Teixeira could be turned around for a closer or steals. Pujols could be moved for a closer or steals. Getting assets here is different than in the NFBC, where you can't trade to move up in certain categories. We saw that people were searching for power after we took so many power-hitters and we'll have no trouble trading some of these assets later if they don't get hurt before then.
Anyway, we were pleased with the way the end game turned out. Here's our roster and I'll follow with a few of the top dollar values. The RT Sports site broke down during the auction and not only couldn't you see what was going on online, but we had no auction board live. We basically had no idea who the other teams needed or how much money they had unless you had a laptop in front of you, and unfortunately, Shawn and I are both still paper guys!!!
Hopefully they can fix that tonight so that you can follow the auction results on SiriusXM.
