Tom & Greg In Tout Wars Mixed League Tonight

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:23 am

Tom and I have been invited to participate in the Tout Wars Mixed League Online draft tonight at 6 pm ET. I believe they are broadcasting the early rounds on SiriusXM Fantasy Channel 210/87 tonight. Enjoy.

I have the 13th pick and Tom has the 14th pick. These are 15-team leagues, 5x5 Roto. I think we're drafting 27 players as Tout Wars uses 4 reserve spots and unlimited DL spots. I think we're also using OBP instead of Batting Average. It should be interesting.

Feel free to provide some advice and look for the results tonight. Enjoy.

You can follow it live, all the information is available on www.toutwars.com - the link to the chat and the results will be posted there.

The tables will be turned a bit - guess who gets to monitor the league with the commissioner access 8-)

Can we blame you for the 13th and 14th spots or was that payback for all the years drafting in those spots!!

We can make it work down there, but putting us right next to each other just wasn't right. Now we can't even discuss players because we're gunning for the same guys. You could have fixed this by giving me the 3rd pick. ;)

From the 13th hole, here's my team:

Tout Wars Mixed Online League (remember, OBP replaces BA)
Greg's Team:
C - Victor Martinez
C- Mike Zunino
1B - Kendrys Morales
2B - Marco Scutaro
SS - Troy Tulowitzki
3B - Evan Longoria
MI - Jimmy Rollins
CI - David Freese
UT - Brandon Belt
OF - Jacoby Ellsbury
OF - Shane Victorino
OF - Ben Revere
OF - Tyler Colvin
OF - Juan Pierre
reserves: Chris Young, Gordon Beckham, Devin Mesoraco

P - Matt Cain
P - Matt Moore
P - Matt Harvey
P - A.J. Burnett
P - Wade Miley
P - Tim Hudson
P - Tommy Hanson
P - Rafael Soriano
P - Carlos Marmol

I didn't mean to:

1. Take so many basestealers. Every time I thought I had a plan (like Dunn or Ortiz), they got snapped up before me.

2. Screw up saves. I missed on the final closers and just waited too long for my 2nd one. C'mon Carlos Marmol!!

3. Pick so many Matts: My rotation started: Matt Cain, Matt Moore, Matt Harvey

I wanted Jedd Gyorko, Wil Myers and Adam Eaton (although I didn't need anymore steals) and didn't get any of them. Oh well.

The draft room was like drafting blind, so everyone struggled. Some owners more than others. But it was still fun. We'll see how this team plays out. Tom scooped me on a few picks, but such is life.

Here's my team. My draft got off to a terrible start. I wanted Bryce Harper in the first round at the 14th pick with Tulo as my backup. When both were gone I honestly had no idea who to pick. I really didn't like anyone there. I went with Justin Upton but wasn't thrilled about it. I ended up chasing youth and upside later to try and compensate so hopefully Myers and/or Hamilton end up being productive at some point this season.

C-Jonathan Lucroy
C-JP Arencibia
1B-Mark Trumbo
2B-Rickie Weeks
SS-Jose Reyes
MI-Zack Cozart
3B-Chase Headley
CI-Will Middlebrooks
OF-Justin Upton
OF-Alex Rios
OF-Andre Ethier
OF-Angel Pagan
OF-Rajai Davis
UT-Brian Roberts

P-Cliff Lee
P-Chris Sale
P-Jon Lester
P-Marco Estrada
P-Shaun Marcum
P-AJ Griffin
P-Jim Johnson
P-Bobby Parnell
P-Bruce Rondon

B-Drew Storen
B-Wil Myers
B-Billy Hamilton
B-Ubaldo Jimenez

Greg, why is that every time you do one of these, you share your team, and then spend half the post apologizing for who, what, when, where, and why you drafted most of it?

[/b]Well, it sure beats writing a screen play about my team or a novel or however else you deal with your drafts.

Actually, I like my team. I'll roll with the Matts and the basestealers and make it work. It's a trading league, so some of my rabbits will have to go later on in exchange for power-hitters.

Thanks Jeff. Wish I liked it half as much as you do. :) I really wanted Harper. That was a big blow right at the start. I also wanted Hamels as my ace and had Ryan Howard targeted as a value pick. Missed on both by a few picks. If I got one of those three guys I think I'd like my team better than I do.

Tom,

I love the back end of your staff with Estrada, Marcum and Griffin. If Lester pitches like Lester your staff will be fantastic.

Thanks Jeff. Starting pitching dried up quickly. I would've liked a stronger No. 3 than Lester but there wasn't much left at that point. So I took him and will hope for a bounceback season.

I did not see that coming at all. I was figuring I'd be able to get him in the 2nd but my plan was to take him at 14 just to make sure I got him and then take Reyes or Upton in the 2nd. Never thought Harper would be gone before my pick. Totally unexpected.

In an OBP league, if you're at all confident Bautista's wrist is OK, he's a top-5 pick.

Thoughts?
Strausburg and Posey considerably later compared to other drafts. Think Strausburg's has anything o do with a slow spring start, or are the tout drafters just more hitting priority?

Also, Greg...I think this is the second time I've seen you take Zunino. Do you expect him to make a contribution this season,...sooner or later? Seems that Montero and Shoppach are ahead of him.

If I want stinkin' Shoppach I can pick him up on the waiver wire!!!

Yes, I do think Zunino will be called up soon in Seattle. He's a solid defensive catcher who will fit in nicely with these young pitchers they will be calling up soon. He's certainly better defensively than Montero and Shoppach. To me, that's what will get him called up sooner rather than later. And I think his bat is good enough to hit in the majors. We'll see if I'm right or not, but I didn't dive in as early as others for my No. 2 catcher and he could be better than many of these No. 2's if I'm right. It's a gamble, but that's what this game is all about.
