The boards were quiet today. I figured everyone had their calculators out for this guy. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Re: $$$ Jose Fernandez $$$
Considering how early in the year it is with everyone still flush with FAAB cash, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Zach Britton size bids of a couple years back. Seems like a similar dynamic. Big prospect, big hype, big success in first couple starts.....
Sorry to bring back bad memories for any Britton bidders from days gone by. Hopefully this will result differently for the Fernandez winners.

Good comp. I was thinking Max Scherzer in his rookie season with the Diamondbacks.Glenneration X wrote:Considering how early in the year it is with everyone still flush with FAAB cash, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Zach Britton size bids of a couple years back. Scherzer is the guy I immediately thought of. Mad Max went way over $500, over $600 in many lge's then.
Alas, those of us in LV2 had no shot at young Jose, one very astute (and Nostradamic

Whether Scherzer or Britton, neither comp predicts a great ROI. Of course there is Gooden.Jeff Erickson wrote:Good comp. Max, Zach, or Doc, I guess time will tell which of these Jose turns out to be.

I think it depends on what you need. I think he's a lock for a very good ERA and WHIP. Good K numbers (although limited by innings no doubt). 8-9 wins tops. Probably not worth what he went for, but since I am just going to waste the FAAB money anyway. Unfortunately 350ish was not enoughGlenneration X wrote:Whether Scherzer or Britton, neither comp predicts a great ROI. Of course there is Gooden.Jeff Erickson wrote:Good comp. Re: $$$ Jose Fernandez $$$
I lowered bids last hour because Miami won't provide much run support.
Still...could use the ERA, K's and Whip...sort of regretting it now.
We'll see what happens. I think he will reward his owners.
Congrats to whoever grabbed him in Main. I looked at him is rd 48 and on in a Draft Champion League and passed on him thinking Miami wouldn't bring him up...

750 and 775 in 2 of my leagues...
Re: $$$ Jose Fernandez $$$
That's a lot of money for a 20 year old rookie with no offense behind him. Probably will limit his innings and for the life of me I can't understand why they promoted him and started the clock. Maybe he'll sell some tickets but if he struggles at some point which is very likely he might go back down. Time will tell. Good luck to all the big spenders who got him.

Re: $$$ Jose Fernandez $$$
The problem with someone like Fernandez is the lack of enough info or data due to his limited professional experience and that all of that limited experience was at a very low level. His numbers say he dominated at that level however. Still, many have in the past that didn't once they made it to the bigs.Hells Satans wrote:

I wanted to put the eye test on Fernandez, so I watched both his games. He brings a lot of positives. It appears he has three plus pitches and adds to that with poise beyond his years. He has talent, that's a given. Strasburg talent, I don't believe so, but real talent nonetheless.
The problem is the two games he pitched, he pitched against flawed offenses (yes, even my Mets). He also only made it around the lineup twice in both. There's no book on him yet. We'll see how he holds up once the book is out.
There are other obvious negatives. The Marlins will likely not support him, neither offensively, nor more importantly defensively. The defensive issues may affect your statement of him being a guaranteed ERA and WHIP lock. Even if he is, he's 150-170 innings tops, a dozen which have been used already, which along with the Marlins ineptitude will almost assuredly affect the remaining two categories to which he can contribute.
Is he worth the $400-900 bids he got today? We'll see. What does he have to do to be worth that? What's the numbers he has to reach? Does he get there?
All that said, I bid on him in every one of my leagues. However I won him nowhere.
