Jose Fernandez Redux!

We all knew it would happen. From Rotoworld:
Reds recalled LHP Tony Cingrani from Triple-A Louisville.
Cingrani will make his first major league start on Thursday night against the Marlins. It's a juicy matchup for the talented 23-year-old left-hander, who had thrown 14 1/3 scoreless innings -- racking up 26 strikeouts and issuing only two walks -- this season at Triple-A Louisville. He's worth a try in most fantasy formats.
And how much will you bid? You know he will be in there until Cueto comes back and probably after...all he has to do is beat out Leake.
Sorry. Just channelling Gekko...

well in most leagues only 14 teams will be able to acquire him because the other spent their $ on the last guy. much different situation because leake pitched well and will probably keep his job. of course there could be an injury- but those never happen.

Not comparable to Fernandez...
1) Fernandez is a bigger prospect, though granted, plays on a lesser team
2) Fernandez had already pitched 2 MLB games prior to FAAB and pitched very well
3) Fernandez has a starting job that he will not lose...

This will be a fun pitching matchup to watch tonight. Can't wait. I saw some minor-league footage of Cingrani on MLB Network last night and he does have a different motion that could throw hitters off the first time around. He's earned the promotion, so now let's see the goods.

Bowman getting in on the action with this contest - hopefully the winner is from this board
Great matchup tonight between two of the top young pitching prospects in baseball. Jose Fernandez (Marlins) and Tony Cingrani (Reds) face off at 7:05 in what should be a "K" fest. We will be giving away this uncut sheet from 2013 Bowman Baseball to one person who correctly guesses how many strikeouts each pitcher will have in tonight's game. If multiple people guess correctly, we will pick one winner at random. Good luck!

So he will be a bargain at what...$250?

Cingrani is a lot different than Fernandez.
An owner can hope/expect 170 innings out of Fernandez.
Cingrani could throw 18 or 24 innings and then be sent down, not to be seen till September.
A lot more of a gamble.

There's a significant pedigree difference also. However, Cingrani does play for the significantly better team.
It should make for another interesting FAAB Sunday, especially if he performs well today.

In cingranis favor: more stats at higher minor leagues levels plus already pitched in majors last year. I am all in

When it comes down to it, the difference in FAAB bidding may be this....
Almost everybody, probably 10-12 FAAB'ers per league entered a significant bid on Fernandez.
Depending on tonight, the bids will be almost as significant, the difference being that probably half of each league or maybe even less will be bidding on Cingrani.

Keith Law, who raved about Fernandez last week, compared Cingrani to Collmenter in that he believed his minor league dominance to be based more on a deceptive delivery rather than pure stuff. I wonder what Collmenter would go for in next week's FAAB.

However, I do recall Collmenter having a pretty impressive rookie year 'til MLB hitters caught up to his delivery.

advantage Fernandez after 1st inning
advantage Fernandez for 2nd inning
advantage Cingrani for third inning

Fernandez simply looks overpowering.
Cingrani looks like the type of pitcher who can be spot on, then in the next start deliver a Zito Dickpunch....

I agree. Phillips couldn't touch him. One thing's for sure, the kid's got bigtime talent.

Best performance by a young pitcher tonight may be what Patrick Corbin is doing to the Yankees.

ROI on those $600 bids isn't looking too hot!

2nd and 3rd time around against a good lineup.
Still, the kid does ooze talent.

I was much more impressed by Fernandez despite the outcome. He was throwing against veteran big league hitters.
Cingrani vs. AAAA players.

They're not even AAAA.

Very accurate analysis IMO. That being said, I probably bid a bit more seriously on him than Fernandez. No way that is going to end up being a good buy. He did look better tonight for a while than he did prior though IMO, even though he got good results. Cingrani wasn't as good on the eye test as I was anticipating. He did get the job done for daily fantasy baseball though.

Cingrani vs. AAAA players.
So, what was especially impressive? The six hits, the three walks, the wild pitch or the five earned runs in four innings?
I admit I did not see the game (Braves were on), and the box is only part of the story. But what the box tells me is that a talented, young (no minor league seasoning above High A ball) pitcher got bent over a barrel by a good major league team. He definitely lost a few leaves from his laurel crown. That can get into the heads of younger players.
Cingrani certainly did not have the challenge Fernandez did. Still, on the Bowman thing Perry mentioned, I got the K's right for Fernandez (had a feeling it would be a short outing), but missed Cingrani by two.

You had to watch, Wayne.
The box score can be very misleading sometimes.
Every kid is going to be roughed up, sure. But, Fernandez is impressive. I would much rather have that kid's future than his counterpart.
In the end, he lost a road game to one of the best hitting teams in baseball, certainly no shame there. Something that even aces endure.
It'll be fun watching this kid progress even though I don't own him anywhere.

Good analysis - to be honest i didn't see anything special with Cigriani outside of the arm slot....i don't see how he can be valued high in faab - without a defined job pitching in a bandbox with what looks to me like a fly ball rep (haven't verified his G/L/F). But that won't stop the insane bidding....ala the American President...one of my fav quotes ever.
"They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand"
"People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference"
