Every year, its the same thing. We go into the season with a handful of "sure thing" closers, then about 20 average closers, and then a few jobs up in the air. About half of the average guys either lose their jobs or get injured. Now, with it being apparent that Hanrahan has lost his job to Bailey (more for performance, than the injury, in my opinion), after 1 month of the season, here is the carnage:

OUT
Detroit - Valverde in Rondon/Benoit out (for now)
Boston - Bailey in Hanrahan out (for now)
Chicago C - Gregg in Marmol/Fujikawa out (still uncertain when Fujikawa returns)
Milwaukee - Henderson in Axford out (for now)
St Louis - Mujika in Motte out

ON THE OUTS
San Diego - Street
New York Mets - Parnell
LA Dodgers - League
Arizona - Putz

Along with many others who still might eventually lose their job. So, we face this every year and every year we spend mega bucks of FAAB on replacement closers. Some work out (Rodney last year). Some don't (A lot).

With all this to consider and the amount of money we spend every year chasing closers in FAAB, how much is a guy like Kimbrel or Chapman or Mariano really worth? Kimbrel was regularly being drafted in the 4th round this year and some thought that was way too high for a closer. But was it? Considering all factors, can Kimbrel or Chapman actually be worth even more? Sure its basically only one category, but its also A LOT of money being saved chasing the likes of Jose Valverde and spending half your FAAB money.

Sure, Kimbrel can get hurt, just like Motte did this year and we know injuries are part of the game. But, injuries aside, these guys being replaced are not hurt... they are just bad.

Another year, another frustrating year of chasing saves. I think we may learn at some point and draft Kimbrel in the first round

Why would Parnell be on the outs? He has a 1.74 ERA and he wouldn't have given up a run last night if Cowgill hadn't made a terrible defensive play.

I don't think any of those on the outs are in any danger at this point - I think Alan just hates closers.

That's what I'm saying too! I took a closer early like that, and even thought about going with 2 in the first 5 rounds.....now I wish I would have. I think you might see this next year JUST because of that post.

Street has zero blown saves? Or just one? Parnell? Fine by me
