If you've ever played blackjack, there is an analogous situation that comes up there. If you are sitting on sixteen facing a dealers ace, you are better off taking a hit, even though you will end up losing a lot. But less frequently than if you stay put.
With your stud pitcher and a tough matchup, you too will end up losing a lot, but probably less often than if you don't start him.
In Blackjack and in this game, there are always going to be situations you get in that make you squirm. Just because the final outcome is not good, it doesn't mean you made the wrong choice...it was just a bad situation to begin with.
