With Wheeler's lousy performance last night in AAA, his major league debut this coming Friday has to be in jeopardy...

Somewhat - seems with rainout yesterday the mets have now pushed him back to around june 18th against the braves... and probably wanting another ML start out of him too.

So much for easing Wheeler in with a debut at home against the Cubbies...wonder how he will handle the Braves lineup in Atlanta. The Mariners' AAAA club made mincemeat of him last night...

Actually wasn't a "lousy" performance, for a PCL game. He did allow 4 runs on 8 hits, but only walked one and had good control of all of his pitches. Struck out 7 in 4 2/3.
He will be called up, as planned, to pitch against the Cubs. Not sure where people are hearing they are delaying his call up. Havent seen that anywhere.

Read it a few places this morning. Mets are doing everything they can and using almost any excuse to leave him there as long as possible because of the super 2 cutoff date being a floating date. Some have said this years cutoff date is more to mid to late June, where as past years it was early june. Just Mets Mgmt screwing the fans to save a few dollars 3 years from now. Wheeler should have been up all year. I hate this super 2 rule, its becoming clear each year teams are not putting the best team on the field the first 2 months.

OK I am seeing it now. Would much rather have him make his first start at home vs the Cubs, than at Atlanta.

yeah me too, but Mets would rather save the money and extra year than protect him from possibly getting hammered by the Braves.... Backman and a lot of others said the kid should have started the season in the majors.... He'll be fine, though...hes going to be a good one...

I was at the game. Perfect conditions for pitching. Game started with pitchers mound in the sun, batters box in the shade. 68 degrees and about 65% humidity, so there shouldn't be any more complaints from Zack about slippery baseballs. Elevation 235 feet; balls may fly in a lot of PCL parks, but not here in Tacoma. Sitting right behind home plate, it was easy to see that the ump was calling a fair and consistent strike zone.
Zack did strike out seven, but many of them were of the seven or eight pitch variety. He also gave up three or four rockets that were caught.
What was most disappointing was the fifth inning. With a 9-1 lead he couldn't get three outs to qualify for the win. A pitcher with " good control " does not give a walk in this situation. Lots of journeyman pitchers can get through three or four innings relatively unscathed, only to end up with a lousy outing.
Anyways, I don't think lousy is too strong a word. Call it mediocre if you want. One headline I saw that accurately summed up his outing said that he "fizzled".
In any case, I own him. But I won't be starting him against the Cubs or especially the Braves.

I had a few friends at the game, as well. They told me he looked solid in the first 4 innings, with 6Ks but had thrown a lot of pitches, and after a very long top of the 5th on the bench, he seemed to lose it after he issued his first walk to start the inning. They said he threw a lot of pitches, had very good movement on his fastball. In addition, they said Tacoma is the best team in the PCL, and scores a lot of runs. In all of their games this year against Las Vegas, they have scored a lot of runs.
I personally don't go by hits and runs, when it comes to minor league pitchers, its all about stuff and they say his is very good, worthy of being in the big leagues, just sometimes struggles with control, which is an issue, but I am being told, wasn't an issue last night. Matt Harvey did not pitch all that great with his AA and AAA teams in the two years before his callup. I believe his ERA was above 4.00.
You must have an awful good pitching staff to afford to bench a top prospect. For me, if its between Barry Zito and Wheeler, I think Wheeler will be my choice..

And I'd take Zito during Wheeler's first outing if the matchups were anywhere close to equivalent. You never know how the rookie is going to handle it. An implosion is certainly possible.
Interestingly, as it stands, they both look like they both may be getting two starts the week of the 16th. Zito at home against vs. San Diego and Miami. Wheeler on the road against the Braves and the Phillies. Are you sure Wheeler will be your choice? If so, more power to you and I really do hope it works out. It would be good news for both of us.

With Harvey's possible injury, Wheeler might pitch Friday, after all.

Harvey didnt look happy he had to come out, he should be fine. Collins hanging on to his job by thread, god forbid he left him and in it became more serious. but you might be right about wheeler if they have the Franchise miss a start.
