Teach me, wise ones

Post by Deadheadz » Fri Jul 26, 2013 7:19 pm

I'm not very well versed in the rules of baseball so this one has me at a loss.

Michael Bourn batting with 1 out and men on 1st and 3rd. He grounds into a force out, the man on 3rd scores and Bourn gets the RBI.

Wilson Ramos batting with 1 out and men on 1st and 2nd. He grounds out at 1st, the man on 2nd scores but Ramos gets no RBI. There was an error on the play but the error allowed Ramos to reach 1st not the run to score.

Are these RBI calls at the scorer's discretion or something else I'm not seeing?

The run definitely scored as a result of the error

how could a run score from 2nd on a ground out??
How about like this: fast runners on 1st & 2nd(e.g. Bourn), 1 out, infield at double play depth, full count, mgr sends runners, runners go, batter hits high chopper over mound in front of 2nd base, 2b covering bag has no play, ss only play is 1st, runner from 2nd keeps going home, 1b throw is late, run scores on FC 6-3.

Willie Mays scored from second a few times on ground outs. Attempting a steal of third, he would gauge how hard the ball was hit to a middle infielder and simply make the turn at third in trying to beat the 1B throw home.
I saw him make it those few times, never saw him thrown out.
As a kid, I thought it was cool.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

The play went from Turner to Murphy to get the force at 2nd and Ramos reached 1st on the error. Werth scored from 2nd.

I thought you can't ever assume a double play...

Did you click on the link I provided (clip lower right)?

Ramos safe at 1st on fielder's choice (can't assume DP)

Throw hit Ramos and bounced towards infield - THIS is what allowed the run to score. Had the runner not scored, the play would have been simply a forceout at second and a fielder's choice at first
_________

Matt Harvey pitching:
Jayson Werth : Foul, Strike looking, Ball, Ball, Foul, Ball, Werth singled to center.
Ian Desmond : Ball, Strike looking, Ball, Ball, Desmond walked, Werth to second.
Stephen Lombardozzi : Foul, Ball, Bunt foul, Lombardozzi struck out swinging.
Wilson Ramos : Foul, Ramos reached on fielder's choice to shortstop, Werth to third, Desmond out at second, Werth scored on Murphy throwing error.
Ross Ohlendorf : Ohlendorf grounded out to second.
End of Inning (1 Run, 1 Hit, 1 Error)
