Results of an NFBC style 2014 mock draft

Post by ToddZ » Wed Sep 25, 2013 3:32 pm

I put together a Round Table column for the fine folks at KFFL and for the last 2013 hurrah, we did a 15-team, 3-round 2014 mock draft, with some commentary. A featured guest is none other than Dan Doughboys Kenyon.

Here's the link: http://www.kffl.com/a.php/134115/fantas ... ource=usat

Please feel free to mock the mock (like you need permission).

Surprised Puig didn't go a bit higher. Pairing Kemp with Cabrera seems like a great start, but would have taken Pedroia over Gyorko. Desmond over Tulo is also very interesting. Different strokes for different folks but Kershaw/Bruce/Kimbrel is not a start I would be liking.

I wonder who will go first in most drafts, Ryan Braun or Yasiel Puig?

I would much rather have Adam Jones and Longoria in the 3rd then taking Fielder in the 1st RD.

Thanks Todd for sharing the first 15-team draft results of the season. I love seeing the first list of names for 2014. We'll get some first round chatter going here soon, too. Lovin' it.

There are so many intriguing decisions early on in next year's drafts. Puig? Braun? Chris Davis? Harper? C'mon, this is FUN. Kemp? Jose Fernandez? Justin Upton? Damn, think of some of these guys falling to you and reaching their full potential. Lovin' it some more.

We'll have some fun with this starting next week and I know Dan will get his email draft started soon enough. A new season is fast approaching and we'll be ready for it. But it's great to see 45 names at the top of the list already. Thanks again for this.

Just realized Strasburg wasn't picked. Drafting psyche is a fascinating thing.

Ahhhhhhh, this is the Joe Berg PreMature League. End the regular season a week before MLB does and start the first mock draft then. Now it makes sense. But if this is the Joe Berg PreMature League, why isn't this 12 teams rather than 15? ;)

Glad to hear an NFBC pay league is already underway. I swear the next season starts earlier and earlier every year.

A closer but no catchers. I can't remember that happening before in the first three rounds.

Nobody named Hamilton either. Billy would be in my top 45. I'd be hoping someone else would be taking Josh.

My, how Albert's stock has fallen. Not sure he deserves the disrespect.

Agon is long gone as well as Verlander and Strasburg. Can't quibble with that. Just find it interesting.

Timing is everything.
Kimbrel went even earlier in the Pre-Mature Draft. He'll go later as the off season unfolds and Closer situations for each team resolve themselves. But at this time, Kimbrel, talent-wise and job-wise stands alone at his position.

Billy Hamilton would be great to have on a team.
He's truly a difference maker for fantasy.
Problem is that the stolen base does not mean as much in real baseball as it does in fantasy. Worse, Hamilton will be playing/not playing for a Manager hesitant to play rookies. He very well could begin next year in the minors. It would be tough to lose a third round pick to the minors.
Last year, Jeff Ruledge was taken early in drafts after a good partial year performance. A 2b/ss playing at Coors sounded yummy.
But pitchers found hitting weaknesses with Rutledge and he ended up back in the minors.
Even with Hamilton's speed, if he doesn't hit, the Reds will send him down till he does.
While others are taking Kimbrel or Alex Rios or Matt Kemp, the Hamilton drafter could end up with a goose egg. That'd be tough.
Hamilton will start out as a 'value pick' in early leagues.
Most likely, his spring training and the logistics of the Reds roster will truly determine his fantasy fate and whether he really is that 'value pick'.

My first thoughts were:

1. I love Matt Carpenter but 2/1 seems high to me. I was surprised by that pick. Ellsbury/Carpenter is an intriguing start, but I'm not sure I'd take two lead off hitters with my first two picks.
2. Interesting to see where SPs are going. I happen to agree with Kershaw as a first round pick and Darvish and Scherzer as second round picks. Wonder how far Strasburg will fall?
3. Shocked that Prince Fielder fell to 2/14. Is that right? I'd take Miggy/Prince to start a draft every day of the week!
4. I also like the Trout/Freeman combo.
5. Jay Bruce moving up to some rarified air. I saw him moving up this year, but that is a little higher than I expected. Still, I think he can put up even better numbers next year, but will he?

I should emphasize that folks in this league probably are well ahead of me in terms of 2014 draft prep and these are just my initial impressions and are not intended as criticisms of any type. I can be way off in my own thinking, which makes these early draft results all the more interesting to review.

While I consider myself a die hard baseball fan and fantasy guy, I could never start this early. This should be called the "Doughboy Classic". I like taking a glancing look at the early results, but that's about it. I enjoy the diversion that football brings at this time of year.

I'll be ready for some slow drafts come late January, until then, carry on Dan!! :D

This would be the first season that start could ever be possible. Who would not do backflips over that beginning? Cabrera/Fielder and about any one of the next 6 pitchers on the board installs this team as the early favorite!!

Bronx- I sort of like prince/miggy but prince- as of today- is player 50 on player rater- and at the only deep hitting position in baseball. I think that is why he wasn't picked.

You're definitely right that Prince has fallen based on his 2013 performance. I guess it depends how you look at it. I think Prince bounces back next year. I like his consistency and the fact that he stays healthy. He bats cleanup in one of the best lineups in baseball. I was seeing Prince going in the 8-12 range last year and while he disappointed, I guess I'm just surprised he fell all the way to 29. I know I'd be pretty comfortable grabbing him in the 15-20 range, but perhaps my view of him is inflated. We'll see.

You are right in so many ways. Just as Mike said about himself above, I too have not begun to do the research for next year, just had this initial reaction to the first draft of the year that I reviewed.

And now that I look at Billy's hitting stats at AAA this year, I see that he regressed at the plate. He still needs to prove he can get on base. So I can see him being drafted rather late right now.

With his weakness at the plate, I can see Walt Jocketty either resigning Choo or looking outside the organization for a centerfielder. I was mistakenly thinking of Hamilton as a lock for the starting CF job in 2014.

I like this team's start - a nice balance of consistency and upside. It's very possible with the talent of these guys that all 5 of them have 2nd round production. Would not dare to use the "dreaded" word for Dan's draft.

I believe Hanley Ramirez should be going 5-6 clicks higher. I have him as a mid first rounder, he's not slipping past me at 10 that's for sure.
