Congratulations to Ricochets in Las Vegas League 2 for finishing first in the NFBC with 2,759.5 points. Big weeks offensively from Vladimir Guerrero (.381-2-8), Scott Podsednik (.381, 4 SBs), Conor Jackson (.375, 7 runs) and Felipe Lopez (.367-1-5) led the way offensively. Joel Pineiro picked up a pair of wins on the mound while Sean Marshall fanned 11 and Bobby Jenks picked up 3 saves.

For finishing first last week, Richochets wins an autographed Steve Carlton baseball courtesy of Tri-Star Productions. Congratulations again to Richochets and good luck to everyone in the NFBC this week.

Sitting in Sin City with the third pick in hand, Rick Gromek came oh so close to passing on one of the game’s premier fantasy threats.

Gromek eventually decided to stick with Vladimir Guererro with the third pick in Las Vegas 2. That decision paid off big for Gromek’s Ricochets team.

Thanks in large part to a big week from Guererro, who hit .381-2-8, Gromek’s team topped the NFBC field with 2,759.5 points. In addition to Guerrero, Scott Podsednik (.381, 4 SBs), Conor Jackson (.375, 7 runs) and Felipe Lopez (.367-1-5) also stepped up offensively. Joel Pineiro picked up a pair of wins on the mound while Sean Marshall fanned 11 and Bobby Jenks picked up 3 saves.

In many ways, Gromek’s big week was a result of him not passing on Guerrero with the third pick on Draft Day.

“As the guys who were sitting next to me will tell you, I almost passed on Guererro with the third pick,” said the 49-year-old Gromek, who lives in Big Bear Lake, CA. “It was a team effort (to finish first last week), but Guerrero led the way with a very nice contribution from Matt Holliday (.360-3-5-2) also. It was rewarding to see contributions from almost everyone in the lineup.”

As Gromek discovered, having a strong Draft Day plan is essential but in the NFBC it’s all about adjustments given the nature of the competition.

“I wanted speed in the second round but Todd Helton was there and I couldn’t pass on him,” Gromek said. “Then I took speed in the third with Podsednik. Draft strategies can work with most fantasy leagues, but this is the cream of the crop so you just have to have Plan A prepared, but in order to compete you have to be ready to go to Plans B, C, D and E.”

Gromek, who is married with two children, has been playing fantasy sports for over 20 years and is competing in the NFBC for the second time. For finishing first last week, he wins an autographed Steve Carlton baseball courtesy of Tri-Star Productions.
