Max Scherzer draft position

Post by BK METS » Fri Oct 18, 2013 4:01 pm

I am curious as to what everyone thinks about Max Scherzer's draft value next year. I saw a stat stating that he has never pitched a complete game in his entire career and only pitched 8 innings, 6 times this year despite his great record. Was this just a fluke season with him going back to his inconsistent self, or will he go to the true elite level of Kershaw and Verander? I am thinking he is on the level of Yu Darvish maybe slightly higher. Thoughts? Another intresting guy next year will be Michael Wacha.

Kershaw...late 1st
Scherzer...late 2nd
Darvish...early/mid 3rd
Verlander...mid/late 3rd
Wacha...hard to say...depends how he does in rest of playoffs and Spring Training. right now, i'll say 7th or 8th

PS - You didn't even touch on one of the biggest value plays on my early draft board...Tyson Ross. He'll likely be a teen pick...which obviously he could shred that ranking. see his 2nd half numbers. MONSTER in making

I am thinking that Verlander has been so good in the late season and the playoffs that he might shoot up to the 2nd round..I would be hesitant to draft Scherzer in the 2nd. He is bound to take a step back next year. Love Ross too but his team will limit his value. I think both Ross and Dillon Gee are value picks in the teens.

Alan, if memory serves me correctly, you plucked your boy RA Dickmeinster late in the 2nd round in an early draft or two last season thanks in part to his magical 2012 season. Based on that rationale, Scherzer goes Top 5 overall, no? :D

Late 2nd/Early 3rd for me for Max....although I doubt he'll be on my teams at that price.

Actually, the earliest I took RA was the 4th round of a DC league. I think Scherzer has a lot more going for him, especially his supporting cast. You are probably right... Scherzer goes around there, but it wont be to me.. :D

In the first two pay drafts...
Kershaw in the first round...
Darvish and Scherzer in the second round, in that order...
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Kershaw - so much for being a money pitcher. Watching his last 3 post season starts. I dont see how he has a long career with those mechanics... Not sure either if that hip injury from last Sept is still an issue, as his mechanics are different from his first 2 seasons... 6 post season starts and he'll be 1-3 after tonight. Giving him 8-10 yrs at 200-225 million will make Arods contract look good. Lincecum went down big time in year 6, Kershaw entering year 6 in 2014 with a lot of innigns the past 3 years.... just saying...

Wow...you aren't serious. The guy, in his last 3 post season starts had given up ONE earned run. His previous post season start was in 2009! He is the best pitcher in baseball and there really isn't anyone close to him. He had a bad start tonight, but talking about his hip injury last year.. Did you see what he did this year? Did you watch any of his games? Wow! You have said some stuff that I have disagreed with, but this one is the topper.

Kershaw is the most dominant pitcher in baseball. He pitched bad tonight. But, this year and his post season this year have been all world... and now one start and his career isn't going to last... hilarious.

Wacha's stock is rising, every time he pitches. He has been unhittable... Would he be a 6th round pick now?

Mechanics and money is what I said, I did'nt say he was going to tank, but Lincecum won his 2nd Cy young and then became a number 3/4 at best since and bottom line is, 1 win in 6 PS starts, thats not not mony. Kershaws Mechanics stink and the tourqe on his hips is violent. He is not worth 200M, no pitcher is...and teams are figuring that out finally....TY CC

Wacha is 3-0 I believe in his first playoffs, now thats money...

somewhat of a comp would be 2012 medlen.

medlen's 2nd half of 2012 was one of the best ever in recent memory. he was going in the 6th round last year (#19 SP). he underperformed a bit and finished the year as the #26 pitcher (8th round material).

wacha has a lot less inning pitched in the bigs than medlen. will he be able to perform at this level after teams are better prepared against him next year. who knows. i still feel the sting of jumping on players with limited major league playing time. (hosmer burnt me and most of my teams after his great rookie year. same goes for cespedes this year).

You haven't even talked about Jose Fernandez, who I'm seeing in the email drafts going ahead of Verlander. 3rd round for Jose Fernandez?

Jose Fernandez over Verlander?? LOL

anyone see verlander's playoff skills? 12.1 K9 and 1.1 BB. seeing how i took verlander in a bunch of my drafts in the 1st round this year, sign me up if he's going in the 3rd.

One problem....We don't play this game during the playoffs.

During the regular season, batters hit 70 points higher vs. Verlander than Fernandez.
Playing on a very good team, Verlander only had one more Win than Fernandez, despite six more starts.
Fernandez beats him in K/INN, WHIP, ERA...
I could very well see why he goes ahead of Verlander in drafts.
For fantasy players, the playoffs and World Series are just more taxing innings on an arm.

Fernandez was the fifth pitcher picked in the Pre-Mature....Kershaw, Darvish, Scherzer, Wainwright
The fourth pitcher picked in the 50 rounder.....Kershaw, Darvish, Scherzer
Verlander has gone in the third and fourth rounds....

Supposedly Verlander corrected a mechanical flaw he had during the regular season and has been lights out since. I would definitely trust Verlander over Fernandez this coming year.

Most would 'trust' Verlander more. He has the track record.
But Fernandez was 'lights out' all season. I can see why he would be taken ahead of Verlander.
