Wow, this is a blockbuster... A fantasy trade, if there ever was one. I think it gives more value to both players... thoughts?

Possibly. I can see more of a bump for Fielder than Kinsler.
Austin Jackson and Miguel Cabrera (if possible ) take a hit.

Fielder yes.. Kinsler...I'm not so sure.

Prince will have a hard time in that heat... Kinsler definately should have better production. This trade was done so Miggy wouldnt have to take a beating playing third anymore and it moves Castellanos back to his primary position 3B. Castellanos coudl be a nice draft pick this year.

For the Tigers, it seems like this is all about money. If you forget the money, who would trade Fielder for Kinsler? I wouldn't. Yes, Prince had a down year in 2013 (for him, not most players), but so did Kinsler. While V-Mart came on last season, he is not Prince's equal in terms of providing protection for Miggy. The Tigers will miss Fielder's reliability (the guy plays every day), power production and protection for Miggy. In 2014, I doubt any Tiger hits 20 HR other than Miggy, who will see his intentional (and unintentional) walks sky-rocket. Yes, this move probably clears the way for the Tigers to lock-up Scherzer long-term, but I think it is a near-term setback for a team that should be on the verge of winning it all.

Love the move for the Rangers. Big bat at 1B, clears the way for Profar.

Will be interesting to see how this impacts future drafts.

The biggest winner may be Nick Castellanos, maybe even more than Profar. The fantasy impact for both these players dwarfs the fantasy impact on Fielder and Kinsler.

Castellanos takes over at third in Detroit, Miggy goes back to first.

I know the Fielder for Ian Kinsler trade deserves its own thread, but can someone explain some of these other off-season moves?

** The Kansas City Royals signed Jason Vargas to a four-year, $32 million deal!!! Really? Vargas is going to be 31 on Opening Day and he owns a career mark of 51-58 and a career ERA of 4.30. Last year on the road, he was 3-6 with a 4.82 ERA and he was 3-4 with a 4.60 ERA after the All-Star break. With all of the great young arms coming up from the minors, how does a team spend this much money on a journeyman like Vargas??

** David Freese to Angels for Peter Bourjos? So much for helping us win that World Series David. GONE!! I understand that the Cardinals want to improve their defense in centerfield, but it seemed like the one spot where the Cardinals were deep before was in the outfield. Does this affect Oscar Taveras at all? Freese is definitely an upgrade for the Angels at the Hot Corner, but he needs to stay healthy and regain his 2012 form.

Do the Cards now move Matt Carpenter to third base and start Kolten Wong at 2B? Now that I like.

What's your thoughts on some of these off-season moves. The Hot Stove League is open for business.

Freese will be 31, declining, bad on defense, expensive in arbitration, under control for one less year than Bourjos, and hits more balls on the ground than Juan Pierre. It's a great trade for STL and a bad trade for LAA, which is consistent with every made those two organizations have made in the last 5 years. If Bourjos can stay healthy, he might be the best defensive CF in the NL and has some other skills. If he can't stay healthy, the Cardinals gave up very little.

Agreed on all counts. It was amazing to me that the Cardinals could get that much for Freese. And it sounds like they held out and got the better of the secondary trade in Salas for Grichuk.
The Cardinals continue to do the right things.

As a Cubs fan I'm disappointed in this trade. The Cards know how to do business, much to my chagrin

Agree as well, especially assuming Craig at 1st and Taveras/Holiday/Bourjos in the outfield, but not so bad for LA. Bourjos is coming off a wrist injury (tricky though power is not his forte) and has not exactly been Mr. Consistency. As bad as you might feel about Freese, he is a significant upgrade over the mixed bag LA used at the position (Nelson, Jimenez, Romine). And they might feel Calhoun is ready, so that opens a spot.

I like this move better for the Angels than the one they made signing Hamilton.

Perma fourth starter for $8 million a year who from 2010 through 2012 averaged just over 200 innings per year with a 3.962 ERA and a 1.245 WHIP? Blood clot surgery under the arm is no picnic, but at least it was not a shoulder/elbow injury.
