Just saw the news report for this. Maybe it's just me, but I find this shocking. Would be very curious to hear how any Royals fans view this news.

I'm expecting a 6,000-word expose from Dan no later than mid-week. :D

I didn't realize Dan was a Royals fan and/or that this would be a "hot button" issue for him. Still, he has been way too quiet this week. :D

Not hard to figure this one out. Royals went 86-76 this past season, their best record in more than 20 years. That deserved a contract extension.

I'm on vacation that mercifully ends this Monday.....
It still amazes me how General Managers are treated like old Congressman. Voters. or in this case, owners, just seem to get used to mediocrity and don't think about change.
Incredible really.
Moore knew that his legacy would be through unless applying a band-aid to the Royals pitching staff. Since the Royals are so inept at bringing up their own farm grown pitchers, they traded for Shields and gave up a possible franchise player in Wil Myers. Then signed Ervin Santana.
Shields will throw his last year for the Royals this year and Santana has been replaced by Jason Vargas who is a cripple shooter. A pitcher that usually beats the teams he should, but struggles against teams that have good hitters.
In other words, mediocre.
Mediocre will be Moore's legacy. The Royals have a lot of good kids. Mostly PITA's (Pain In The Ass). Not one hitter in their lineup is feared. Butler, Hosmer, and Gordon can have great games, but a pitcher doesn't fear any of them. The Royals are lacking what they've lacked throughout Moore's reign. A leader, both on and off the field.
The day before the Vargas signing, Moore broke out a press release to the local press that he would have a 'Major baseball-related Announcement'.
It is typical Moore.
He believes, and wants Royals fans to believe, that the Vargas signing is 'Major'.
It just fits his m.o., which in Moore's case could stand for Mediocrity Overlord.

As hard as I am and have been on Moore, there is a General Manager who has passed him in vying for worst General Manager in baseball.
Ruben Amaro.
A once-proud staff has turned to Lee, Hamels, and pray for three days of rain. He has done little to get younger, preferring to run out the old guard once again. While Howard, Utley, and Rollins are names spoken by Phillies fans in the past, Amaro still sees them as a future. A team has to have a direction. That is the number one item for a General Manager.
The Phillies have none, unless Hell counts.
Last year, Phils fans were clamoring for more young players, so Amaro signed Michael and Delmon Young.
He doesn't get it.
In his mind, he sees older players working for the Yankees. The problem being that instead of churning oldsters like the Yankees, Amaro gets out a dart board and starts firing away.
The Phillies have gone from great, to good, to mediocre, to now, pathetic.
And like voters keep that old Congressman, Phillies owners keep Amaro. There is no 'Comeback GM of the Year' for GM's.
There should be a 'Go Away GM of the Year'. Amaro would and will be the front runner for that one.

While Andrew Friedman continually figures out how to put together a winning team, every year, with limited resources and no fans. Now, if he could just get his owners to build a stadium, maybe he'd be getting somewhere. He is probably the most "under the radar" GM in baseball, and the Shields for Myers trade proves that he gets it. What will he get for Price?

Joc Pederson and Zach Lee?

I'm not sure Tampa baseball fans deserve the Rays. I understand the stadium situation sucks, but for them to play meaningful late-September home games in front of 10,000 fans (or less) is an embarrassment. The fact that the Rays can compete with, and often beat, teams with much-higher payrolls in what many consider to be the best division in baseball is a testament to their GM, manager and entire minor league system. It is so easy to admire what the Rays (and Cardinals) do with young talent, but so difficult to copy it successfully.

Dan - Agree with everything you said. Also, don't forget the Papelbon signing. They pay top dollar for a closer and get a mediocre return (I actually thought he sucked last year). Around the same time, the Rays go shopping at the dollar store and get two great years (alright, one great year and one OK year) out of Fernando Rodney of all people. Hell, the Rays even got James Loney to be fantasy relevant last year!

Love Friedman and love the brain trusts in St. Louis.
I also like what Theo and his crew are doing with the Cubs. They've separated themselves from the costly contracts and really have an organization of kids that could really blossom over the next couple of years. Unlike Moore, I think they'll realize that they'll need some 'competitive adult's' to go with those kids. It'll be interesting to see who they sign on the free agent market in a couple of years when those kids start seeing their potential. It won't be a pitcher like Gil Meche or even Jason Vargas.
Speaking of Gil Meche, here is a list of Moore's free agent signings from his first year on. His minor league system of offensive players and bullpen help has been his saving grace. He is a disgrace as a GM when it comes to Major League ready players as this list supports.

Gil Meche
Octavio Dotel
John Bale
David Risk
Yasuhiko Yabuta
Jose Guillen
Miguel Olivo
Brett Tomko
Doug Waechter
Horacio Ramirez
Kyle Farnsworth
Willie Bloomquist
Juan Cruz
Jason Kendall
Brian Anderson
Noel Arguelles
Scott Podsednik
Rick Ankiel
Jeff Francoeur
Melky Cabrera
Jeff Francis
Bruce Chen
Jonathan Broxton
Yuniesky Betancourt
Jose Mijares
Roman Colon
Ervin Santana

5 of these players had more than a 2 WAR.
30 PER CENT had a minus war.
Dayton Moore pays 1 million dollars more per win than the average General Manager.
For a General Manager in a small market, it is baseball suicide.

Not so fast on Theo, Dough.

Dayton woulda been hung on the town square if he woulda given EJax 4/50M.

I do believe in Theo and think it will take all of 5 years, but I'll never figure that transaction out. No matter how it is explained to me, I'll never figure that one out.....

I'll bet there is a good story attached to that one. :D
I've never figured it out either.

Have to agree with you on Amaro. 5 years and $125 million for Ryan Howard? Are you kidding me? Pappelbon signing was bad also. Amaro seems to like the veteran guy but he's overpaying for past production. Team is aging quickly and doesn't seem to have the minor leaguers to replace the old guys. Phils do have some young talent in Ben Revere, Darin Ruf and Dom Brown, they will plug in Marlon Byrd in the OF this season which is a signing I actually like. Maybe Ruf takes over for Howard at 1B or platoons. Team could contend in 2014 but things are going to have to break right.
